What went wrong?
>>
is that a giant feather or is she just really tiny?
>>
She's brown. The only successful brown princess wasn't a strong lead and is often associated with a blue genie.
>>
>>91057369
It's a paddle.
>>
>>91057325

>>

>>
It should have been hand-drawn.
>>
>>91057325
Not thicc enough.
>>
Released movie about pacific islanders in thanksgiving and did it in a climate when people are getting riled up about PC stuff instead of just being indifferent.
Should have aimed for the summer when people are thinking about beaches and featured more of a lolsorandom animal companion that had a bigger role than the chicken.

Alternatively, drop all the humans and make it a movie about pacific islander animals.

Kids would have eaten that shit up. As it stands now, it's a 7-8/10 kids movie with some amazing parts, that's more loved by older audiences that can better appreciate the work that went into it.
>>
>>91057325
As far as I know, quite a bit of it ended up being cut.
For example, her pet pig? He was meant to stick around for the whole movie but was quietly dropped for some reason. That's why he's around for so much at the beginning then just... vanishes from the movie.
>>
>>91057466
So just because she didn't bone a far-older demigod she's a lesbian? Alright.
>>
>>91057325
Too many attempts at going "look at how self-aware we are". Characters were strong, movie would have been excellent if more sincere.
>>
When the fuck is it supposed to be set, anyway?
The dialogue is completely contemporary, but there's zero technology anywhere and the idea of unexplored islands in this day and age is ludicrous.

Also why did they suddenly have to leave the island when Moana managed to fix everything? Why uproot everything and leave your island behind because your ancestors did?

It's not like settling down had made them fat or stupid or anything, it was pointless.
>>
>>91057325
ugly feet
>>
>90% of the screen time is blue-greenish water and blue sky and occasional sand.

What indeed.
>>
>>91057595
In ancient Polynesia. The dialogue is the same as literally every Disney move set in the past.

They didn't have to leave, and they weren't abandoning it completely. They were choosing to explore and expand, since now they could without worrying about Te Ka fucking them up.
>>
>>91057505
This
>>
>>91057650
>The dialogue is the same as literally every Disney move set in the past.
And that's a major drawback since in all the other recent Disney films, the era is immediately recognizable and you don't need to question it. In Moana, it could easily meant to be be present-day. You can't tell from the houses, the clothing or anything else what time period it's meant to be until you begin to notice the lack of modern things. And even then, it could just be set in the 18th century.
>>
>>91057325
Bitch is barefoot the whole movie
Ugly feet
Shoulda got the tangled guy to work on those
>>
>>91057325
Nothing, people just had insanely huge expectations after Frozen.
>>
>>91057325
The pacing was really bad imo. The heart of life was a macguffin of the worst kind (why not show her being tempted to use it to maybe revive her grandmother). Also, everything in the ocean wants it but they only get attacked by one group of pirates. Oh, and what the ocean can do to help her on the quest is extremely inconsistent.
>>91057502
Also this. Could have given the shapeshifting demigod more than 5 forms.
>>
The roadtrip nature of the movie made all the stuff feel episodic.

Villain with most characterization and ability to serve as foils to the protagonist was a David Bowie Crab that appeared for a total of 7 minutes or so and the actual 'bad guy' of the movie was a characterless evil lava blob until she wasn't.
>>
>>91057898
There wasn't ever much real danger. the coconut guys were dispatched in minutes, never seen again. The giant crab was barely a threat, and then the final boss was a bit of a cop-out.

They focused on the wrong aspects of the film.
>>
>>91057850
this, she has the same feet as Wreck-It Ralph, why the fuck doesn't disney make new CG models, why are they so fucking cheap
>>
>>91057595
The movie was inspired by something called "the Long Pause". Early humans who were sailing the Pacific and settling onto new islands stopped their exploration for a millennium or two. So the movie seems to be placed around when Polynesians started voyaging again, something like a thousand years ago.

I actually really liked moana, the only bits I didn't like where a couple seconds like where she does the power walk during a song that's totally supposed to be her frozen moment. Where the squares her shoulders and does that else stride. It was cringe as fuck considering the rest of the movie was hers it really sucked they wedged that frozen pandering in.

I get it, frozen made mad bank for disney, but they should let their movies stand on their own legs. It showed weakness and lack of faith in their characterisation.

That being said it was like 5 seconds in an otherwise brilliant movie. I liked it a lot more than most recent disney shit zoo notwithstanding. (zootopia's only problem being they hyped the shit out of the waifu-able rabbit and she is adorable but then that voice, eeeh. Not what I was expecting after seeing all the silent webms of judy.)

>>
>>91061653
The ocean is above them, so they are literally under the ocean.
>>
>>91061653
But the mountain rises up out of the ocean
You see them rise up from the ocean after being blasted up by the geyser
You see fish come down from the ocean into tamatoa's lair
It's some kind of weird monster populated underworld beneath the ocean
I don't know if it's a Polynesian mythology thing or not but that's the only conclusion I can draw.

Nothing wrong, it's just rather conventional. Moana might be for the current Disney 3D Rennaisance what Pocahontas was for the previous Disney Renaissance: the point people started to notice they were paying for the same movie.

Maybe if expectations for this movie and Zootopia had been reversed, and Disney took more of a risk with Taika Waititi's original screenplay, we might be remembering Moana more fondly as an offbeat hit like Emperor's New Groove, rather than a not-as-good-as-Frozen underperformer.

It's a monster realm. They could have made it look like anything. They don't dive into the water to get into it. They're walking around like it's land for God's sake. Its not actually indicative if what an ocean setting has to offer.
But fine, let's say it's an underwater sequence where there's just no swimming or diving.
It's still the best part of the movie because the rest of the movie is them on a raft in the middle nowhere because that's what the open ocean is. Its miles and miles of nothing. At least in a city there's buildings and signs to keep the imagery varied. All the island scenes are the same shades of green and brown, and the ocean is just fucking water.

I'm in Europe and Moana Pozzi doesn't come up on at least the first 10 pages of Google search when looking for "Moana". Maybe she enjoys more popularity in her home country, but I had never heard of her before the whole Vaiana thing.

Zootopia was also renamed as Zootropolis in European countries because of copyright issues (a Danish zoo already owned the trademark for "zootopia").
I find it more likely that copyrights/trademarks/legal issues were the reason for Moana's name change in Europe, but people found the porn star explanation more interesting to talk about

It’s me, and nobody can convince me otherwise. If anyone approached me on the topic of this not possibly being me, then I immediately shut them down with overwhelming evidence that this character is me. This character is me, it is indisputable. Why anyone would try to argue that this character is not me is beyond me. If you held two pictures of me and this character side by side, you’d see no difference. I can safely look at this character every day and say “Yup, that’s me”. I can practically see this character every time I look at myself in the mirror. I go outside and people stop me to comment how similar I look and act to this character. I chuckle softly as I’m assured everyday this character is me in every way. I can smile each time I get out of bed every morning knowing that I’ve found my identity with this character and I know my place in this world. It’s really quite funny how similar this character is to me, it’s almost like we’re identical twins. When I first saw this character, I had an existential crisis. What if this character was the real me and I was the fictional being. What if this character actual became aware of my existence? Did this character have the ability to become self aware itself?

Two Disney movies in one Oscar year.
Otherwise, it was pretty good for a modern Disney movie. There are a lot of things that could've been improved but it was way better than Frozen.

so why didnt the sea just give the heart back? also why did it choose Moana? and why didnt the sea just drag Moana to the island under cover of water to prevent the lava thing? The sea was fucking OP.
>>
>>91066298
It felt weird in the movie. After seeing it, though, it felt like the gods were more interested in creating legends rather than specifically solving problems. Like making Maui into a demigod instead of just saving his life.

>>

Te Ka can't touch water, the ocean couldn't return it itself. It chose her because she showed humanity when she was an infant and saved the turtle. Her humanity is what allows her to connect with Te Ka at the end. Neither Maui, the ocean or anyone else in her village could do it. The water splitting and letting her pass in the beginning is a direct parallel to the climax where she restores Te Ka's heart

The story is really linear, Moana just went from Point A to B with a little minions (the coconuts) then a mid-boss (Tamatoa) and ended in the redeemend "villian" arc.

You only say this because you live in a world where almost everything has been discovered already. To me, money doesn't mean shit.

If a movie is plasse or mediocre, that's what it is.

The movie wasn't even nóminted for the Japanese Academy Awards and even if it did, Shin Godzilla would destroyed his ass.
>>
>>91066444

That's how gods are in every myth, though. More than anything, they want to mess with humans because it entertains them.
>>
>>91068182

>>
>>91069377
I wouldn't say consistently better. Moana is by far one of the best modern ones, but mediocre shit like Frozen and big hero 6 came right before it
>>
>>91069914
I completely forgot about Big 6. What a misstep.
>>
>>91064057

To be fair, Moana was a little more restrained about that aspect. The first time she tries to boat, she nearly dies. She's only able to pursue her passion when it becomes apparent that she needs to in order to save her people.

At the very least, the movie teaches that you should focus your passions in a way that benefits others, and not purely for your own gain. It's a hell of a lot better than Ariel or Anna.

How is that not impressive?

Because real civilizations settle, grow, invent, innovate and flourish.
The ancient Polynesians, almost exactly like the Native Americans, would come to a new area, hunt the local wildlife to extinction, overfish and slash and burn until the soil could no longer be used. Then they'd pack up and move on to the next area/island.

Nomadic cultures were and are historically speaking the lowest possible shit-tier and by far most have never contributed nothing of note to humanity's history.

It was a meandering non-adventure with all the interesting and exciting parts seriously underplayed.

It SHOULD have been a movie about Moana following Maui around while he did all his cool shit like fighting monsters and dredging islands up from the bottom of the sea. Set Tamatoa as the primary antagonist, and have them race to find the Goddess of Death to see who can be the first one to steal her heart.

It's extremely annoying with all the characters being right in your face making dumb expressions throughout of the movie. Half of the movie looks like a Dreamworks poster. Despite being set in Cusco it doesn't feel anything like the Inca except the generic ooga booga gold temple and jungle aesthetic. But the biggest failing is that the dialogue is like 90% filibustering in an attempt to conjure up humor which never fucking works, unless you're Robin Williams. Compare with Moana whose few throw-away lines are way funnier than anything in Emperors.

I like that floating eyeball you get when you mirror the poster though.

That's not clever at all you troglodyte. The Motunui people had changed out of necessity, along comes Moana and convinces them to regress to an ancient cultural behaviour which they have NO ACTUAL NEED to reinstate.

They were doing great on the island, they had a flourishing society, a several generation long line of chieftains and everyone was perfectly happy. Then it all has to change because Moana wants it to, and it benefits her personal dreams and ideals.
>>
>>91083568
You fucking idiot, packing up and moving when the island's no longer providing is the single most fundamental part of humanity's psyche. End your existence for forcing me to type out something so obvious.
>>
>>91083568
Um, no. It changed because Maui did what he did a long time ago. If you notice something, Moana eventually started being okay with leading her people even if the sea still called her (which was for a mission to save the world, mind you). I mean, the island was literally dying when she left. And when Moana came back there's nothing explicitly saying that she convinced them to do it. Moreso that she probably showed that the option was open now and the chief probably reinstated it.
>>
>>91084190
Holy shit you're retarded. The island was in no way close to "no longer providing". They lived there for several dozen generations, which directly contradicts your dumb moronic shitty argument. They had working agriculture and with Moana restoring the heart, everything went back to normal.

There was no need and you're a fucking dumbass.
