BC Bestseller List – 26th March 2017

>Action Comics #976 was a monster today–it sold more copies on Wednesday in our store that the second, third, fourth, and fifth place books combined! Marvel placed two books in this week’s top ten: Darth Maul #2 and Unworthy Thor #5. It is quite informative that the only Marvel superhero title that cracked our top ten was a title featuring a legacy hero…

>Strong interest Silver Age, with mid-condition affordably priced key issues (Captain America #100, etc.) selling very well.

>Jeff Lemire wins the week with two creator-owned books charting in our top ten… otherwise DC continues to dominate with only Darth Maul and Jason Aaron cracking the list for Marvel. Black Panther has settled into an upper middle-selling book, which is great for Black Panther. And it’s nice to see a book as great and deserving an audience as Doom Patrol hitting our #1 spot.

>Spring break usually makes for a weird March. Regulars are out of town and new people are visiting. X[-]O Manowar 1 managed to make the top ten. Marvel makes it in thanks to Star Wars Darth Maul. The rest went to DC. Suicide Squad is doing real well in store.

>Darth Maul #2 was the top seller with Action and Detective pretty close behind. Valiant must have hired Robert Kirkman as a sales manager since people seemed to have heard about X-O Manowar. [It's the b]est-selling [V]aliant title without a heavy discount since the original batch of new books…the great paper stock helped…now they just need that on all the titles so customers feel they are getting their money’s worth. The only other thing they need to stop doing is stop showing 2/3rds of each issue on BC… might want to let word of mouth work for a change.

>Amazing Spider-Man and [S]ilver [A]ge X-Men were the back issue movers of the week. Little bit more interest in Star Wars since people figure a trailer should be due in the next month or so for episode 8. Get the harder books now I guess before it is a new rotation of Star Wars frenzy.

>Low sales week. Being in a college town during spring break, it didn’t come as a surprise. The sales breakdown was a bit of a surprise. DC is out of our #1 spot for the first time since Rebirth. Detective Comics fell to number two behind Invincible Iron Man. Action was DC’s only other top 5 book at number four. Unworthy Thor took the third spot and Buffy at five. Reborn was Millar’s best-selling book for us in ages. Black Panther always charts for us and this week it was #8. DC mainstays fill out the rest- Flash, WW, Teen Titans.

>Iron Fist sold ok for a Marvel first issue but a lot lower than we’d hoped. It was outsold by books like Hulk and Ultimates 2. Not too much excitement or sales around the Running with the Devil books. Doom Patrol is doing well for Young Animal, and that is all to report about Young Animal. My favorite book of the week was either Black Hammer #7 or Descender #20. Lemire’s creator-owned work has been fantastic lately.

>Iron Fist is off to a good start (unlike reviews of the Netflix [s]how). But Gamora, poor Gamora. We didn’t sell a single copy, not even the Venom Variant at cover price. Good thing I didn’t get very many. Unworthy Thor and Extraordinary X-Men finished with decent sales. Hopefully this means good things for RessureXion (or however you spell it [actually ResurrXion])[.]

>DC still doing the best overall. Last week for DC’s $2.99 monthlies (next week is a fifth week, with weird offerings and late books from every publisher). We’ll see how this affects the sales soon enough, won’t we?

>Reborn is the top-selling indy book this week. Still selling strong as a back-issue, too. Curse Words and God Country still burnin’ it up, too. Image for the win!

>X-O Manowar blew off the shelves, too. Always nice to see Valiant selling strong. They seem to try so hard to treat everyone fairly.

>Marvel snagged the majority of our Top 10 sellers this week, taking six of the rankings. Black Panther remains our strongest selling regular Marvel title while Iron Fist #1 also ranked on this week’s list, indicating that lackluster reception of the Netflix series doesn’t seem to have done too much damage to initial interest in the new ongoing comic. Fans of Sex Criminals seem to be hanging in there despite an erratic release schedule, as issue #17 was our best performing non-cape title this week. As heat from Rebirth cools into the new status quo, DC’s only showing on the Top 10 this week was under their Young Animals [sic] imprint, with Doom Patrol #5.

>Daddy DC has taken off the belt and is coming for little boy Marvel this week at FFF. Our Top Ten was overwhelmingly DC dominant as they took 8 spots (12 in Top Twenty), while Marvel and Image had 1 book each (both had a better showing in our Top Twenty). Our full Top Ten list is #1 Detective Comics, #2 Action Comics, #3 Flash, #4 Hal Jordan and the GLC, #5 Wonder Woman, #6 Batman TMNT Adventures, #7 Reborn, #8 Darth Maul, #9 Suicide Squad and #10 Batgirl. Marvel fared better in the Top Twenty with Unworthy Thor at #13, Invincible Iron Man at #14, Spider-Gwen at #17, and Hulk at #18. Batman #19 made it to #11 despite being a week old. Further proof that DC has found a way to keep people coming back for more even if the book isn’t brand new. Iron Fist fell just outside of the Top Twenty at #21 which should be more surprising but the lukewarm reception of the Netflix series played an unfortunate role in not creating any additional interest in the book.

>Marvel had one of their better weeks at our store, but it’s a shame that just because they’re not the bottom they’re doing well. Their subs are definitely the saving grace. We just don’t seem to sell much from off the shelf as we used to. Unworthy Thor’s big safe word reveal got a few more sales out of the miniseries, but it was still beaten out by one book that is on its second week and another that stars Johnny Quest and Birdman. I wish I could say the Venom Variants also helped boost sales on some books, but they only add one or two sales on top of already sad numbers.

>Image is still holding strong with Black Hammer at #15 and Curse Words at #19. We definitely try to push the oddball books and Curse Words has been a store favorite. I personally wish it was doing better. An interesting thing I’ve noticed is that we actually seem to sell small runs of these newer Image books, especially when they put out a reprint of an earlier issue. The interest is there, it just isn’t consistent on a weekly level.

>We had a pretty eclectic bunch of back issues sell this week. A lot of older mid to late 80s Marvel like Captain America and Incredible Hulk moved through. We also sold a good chunk of early 00s Batman. As mentioned above, we actually sold a good amount of the first few issues of Curse Words to people who also came in to jump on with the most recent issue. We sold the usual lot of X-Men, Spawn and Punisher as well.

>Darth Maul dominates the week with X-O Manowar coming in 3rd. Reborn still keeps selling strong. Rick and Morty continues to own the business though. Power [R]angers is a strong second overall. Old Man Logan [t]rades are big sellers as well.

>The new releases this week were a nice mix of different companies and characters. Atom Freeman from Valiant was on hand to guest-sell X-O Manowar and it was really cool to see him interact with customers. Iron Fist rocketed to claim our top spot. Good timing Marvel! Darth Maul seems to be a fan favorite title and the strong sale of issue one have continued despite a longer than a month gap between issues. Unworthy Thor has been the most consistently selling mini series in my store’s history. This is a testament to Jason’s writing and fanbase. I was pleased to see Doom Patrol make it onto the list.

>X-[F]orce back issues are picking up. Yes, X-[F]orce. We also have officially started running DC Rebirth issues as back issues and lots of folks are collecting both covers. God Country #1 has been the hottest new issue with single character Marvel 1:50 variants heating up as well.
