There's nothing wrong with fanwikis. Granted there are two things of what you could mean.
1- A fan-made wiki. A small dictionary detailing all the stuff and background characters and minutiae of a game or book or such. There should only be one of each, as it makes for a more complete body of work.
2- A wiki about fan-fiction. This is needed for all the people who want to know one little thing to understand one other little thing to understand what X just said. Very useful when you want to cut to the chase about a fanfic that is ten years old and everyone's read, or such.
Also, I preferred encyclopedia over the word wiki.
