>"Someday a real rain will come and wash the scum off the streets..."
In a city where the sun never shines and night reigns supreme, a cab driver with an arm of steel and a head full of bad memories is hired by a woman on the run to be her bodyguard. Her death will only be the start of Tanner's problems.Especially when she decides to come back...
From late novelist John Brosnan and artist Kev Hopgood, 2000AD presents a hard-boiled cyberpunk tale of life and death in... "NIGHT ZERO"!

Jose Ortiz did do some work for 2000AD.

I know, but his name isn't anywhere in the credits. This art is all over the place so I'm guessing Hopgood was tracing heavily from various sources, mainly Ortiz for his protagonist

>>91010924
Holy shit this fucking takes me back! Kev Fucking Hopgood, ahh, what an under-discussed Brit workhorse of an artist. His Toothy stuff, Zoids, Dragons Claws, Death's Head...god that man is under-rated as fuck. Is he still alive? So many fond memories of this man's artwork from my childhood--is this one of the reprints packaged with The Megazine? I still have the prog with that cover in my attic somewhere...thanks SO much, Judge Anon, you rule, man
>>91030633
>is this one of the reprints packaged with The Megazine?
Yep, good eye. I love those little reprints, they really are awesome. As for Hopgood he's still alive, although sadly Brosnan died in 2005 I think. But his work lives on...
Speaking of things living on, I'm gonna take advantage of the surprising longevity of this thread to start the next chapter in the lives of Tanner, Allana and some new friends, as everyone's favorite cyborg war vet turned cab driver gathers a party of bizarre companions and ventures forth in a mission of peace to the end of the world and... "BEYOND ZERO"! Talking animals! Flying juggernauts! Robot feminists! Face it, squaxx dek thargo: this one has it all!

>>91031098
Yeah those digest are dope...sooo glad they reprinted this--is this from this month's issue by any chance? If so I might still be able to score a copy locally. I REALLY need to start buying Toothy and The Meg again, regularly, I say that all the fucking time!
Can't believe I'd forgotten about this story but as soon as I saw that cover all the memories came flooding back. Love how Hopgood is kinda riffing on all the great Spanish/Argentinean artists who worked in comics like, oh, what's his fucking name, did loads of work for Brit comics back in the day....he drew the Dredd story with the killer who believed he was Jack The Ripper, had a little las-knife stiletto? Argh fuck this is gonna do my head in...
>>91031204
Hah, another ultra-memorable cover! Just wonderful.
Have you ever read any of Kev Hopgood's aforementioned Marvel UK stuff, like Death's Head or Dragon's Claws (I fucking loved that comic as a kid--I think it was the first Marvel UK comic to adopt the same size and format as American comics but I could be wrong there--I know there was a comic from around the same time which featured Captain Britain, can't remember if it was titled eponymously, for some reason I'm thinking it was called Knights of Pendragon, Gary Erskine drew the first few issues, I'm pretty sure of that....)? They're easily as good as the contemporary stuff that DC or the American Marvel were putting out at the time. There was also some cross-over between Death's Head and Dragon's Claws--the former is a robotic hitman, pretty cool character, great design.
>>91031628
>>91031609
Nah, this reprint was from a couple of years back. As for the artist, that'd be Jose Ortiz, as noted in this thread, though the little reference to Torpedo make me think Hopgood is a Spanish comics fan in general.
I've actually read Dragon's Claw! Pretty damn fun stuff. Always a fan of those weirdo bloodsport sci-fi books. I dig Marvel UK in general (Motormouth is my absolute favorite), but finding scans is a pain.

Hahah nice, one, glad you dug Dragon's Claws! Which one was Motormouth again?
>>91031877
>>91031863
Motormouth was the one about the punky street chick who finds a pair of dimension-jumping sneakers and dicks around the multiverse with Killpower, the liefeldian muscle mass with the brain of a literal ten year old kid, and eventually gets sonic voice powers. She also %$&#ing likes to $%#&ing curse a &#$%ing lot.

>>91031950

It's *really* hard to beat. Or even equal.
Wiki-diving tells me the later Zero stories were less well thought of but I think the second is pretty solid, kinda just building on the parodical weirdness of the first with a bigger lens. It's ridiculous but it's obviously intended to be and it doesn't only send up one of its characters or ideas. Really reminds me of like, sci-fi euro or SA comics of the same time period.
You could launch a Risa strip tomorrow if you got the tone right.
>>91032013
Well, ain't life full of coincidences! Also, forgot to mention it in the previous page, but those spikes? Kinda really hot.
>>91031919
Yep, that's ringing a bell, definitely. Did Gary Erskine work on that one, too? I absolutely remember Killpower! In fact Erskine did a drawing of all the Marvel UK characters for the UKCAC '91 program, I had a fucking brilliant Dermot Power sketch of the electricity-samurai dude, you know the computer programmer (?) who is in an accident and dies, coming back as this electric samurai thing? It was fucking lovely but I gave it away unfortunately. Anyway do you remember the name of the character? I may well have had this conversation with you before (or I'm getting deja vu)...

>You could launch a Risa strip tomorrow if you got the tone right.
Don't give me ideas, man. A hardcore 80s feminist in a Sorayama war robot body... And yeah, Brosnan to me really nailed that mix of sci-fi, humor, action and just outlandish craziness that 2000AD does so well.

>>91032762
Y'know, this is actually a pretty strong point. What is the "real" version of a person? The person herself, or the preserved memories of her "persona"? If a person becomes an icon and that icon is given life, even an electronic one, does that make the icon inherently more "pure" than the person herself? Is Risa Pirea the woman more real and deserving of life than Risa Pirea the icon? Even if the life she's lead has made her stray from what made her such an icon? Are we who we are or what we do?
>>91032819
... anyway, splat.
>>91032845
That line from Risa in the fourth panel could be straight-up out of the Metabarons or Nikopol or w/e.

That's something I really like about this story: Robo-Risa makes her choice, and in the grand scheme of things it's a good one since she's ridding the land of an oppressive monster. But there's also not much in the way of judging her, either by the story or by the characters. In fact, for all their bickering, Tanner's group is oddly supportive of each other.

>>91053796
Beats me. The amazons are just one of the implied many stops on her Tribute Tour, so it's possible she just wants to keep things nomadic, or doesn't want to deal with the hassle of turning them into a marauding force. That, or she's just now finding out that they worship her. From up on high on her airship, everyone must look like ants.
This deserves another bump
