Cow and Chicken became pretty popular in Brazil, more so than Ren & Stimpy.
Ren and Stimpy didn't really get much exposure here because it aired at late night Nickelodeon, at which point most kids would be asleep.
But Cow and Chicken had more frequent reruns at a much more accessible time period.

So the end result is that, here in Brazil, Cow and Chicken never had that stigma of being a Ren and Stimpy knock-off, because most people who watched it didn't know what Ren and Stimpy was in the first place.

don't know how popular it is, but back around 2006 a rich Chinese guy had me go to mexico to buy some Memín, and some other very racist comic books. He got enough to resell

He was like "haha don't you think these comics making fun of black people are so funny! youre so lucky you get to read these every month" , told him some thing like "ehh theyre kinda racist". he looked at me as if that was the first time he heard anyone vaguely defended a black person

He's less annoying in the Brazilian dub, which makes him more tolerable.
Honestly it's not like Woody Woodpecker is an underrated comedic masterpiece it was just somehow more popular in Brazil than even the Looney Tunes. Every kid watched it. Everyone remembers certain moments and characters and that stupid laugh.
It's mostly because of reruns (it still gets reruns to this day).

If we are talking a wrestling match, Goku is fucking finished if we are talking about El Santo at the top of his popularity. Goku never wrestled in México before and he got creative control AND the crowd on his favor.

If it's one of El Santo movies, sure, Goku could beat him but only if he is a good guy who teams up with El Santo in the end. If Goku is portrayed as an antagonist, then history has show us that is impossible.

Saint seiya and Dragon ball were the two biggest animus in the land of hues as far as i can remember, everyone knows about it in one way or another.

There was a fair amount of animus to be aired around here, really.

There were some others that were popular for a while like yuyu hakusho and pokemon, but nothing that managed to have the same lasting impact as the big two.

I do remember watching at least a handful of episodes of bucky, but never managed to get too much of the plot.

Damn, you remember Bucky? Definitely an oldfag.
Did it air in Band or Manchete? I don't remember.

Also, i think both Pokémon and Naruto at it's peak of popularity were more popular here than Saint Seiya ever was.

Dragon Ball (Z) is definitely #1 and will never be surpassed. I remember back in highschool there was not a male kid in this country that didn't know how to sing Cha-La Head Cha-la.

I didn't get the "Naruto on National Television" era, but i feel that while Nurutu was huge with the Otaku crowd, there was a time where every kid was into Saint Seiya.

It was the closest i've ever seen a series got to DBZ.

There was lot of banter based around which Gold Saint had your sign.

It's not a meme, it's a serious matter, the northern region of Mexico says that quesadillas must always have cheese, the southern region of Mexico says quesadillas don't always have to be made of cheese in order for them to be considered quesadillas, Since i'm from the north, I'm quite biased
it's on the name ffs
cheese (queso) + tortilla = quesadilla
yet people from the south insist it's not true.
do you want to insult a mexican? tell 'em goku is shit, do you want to start a war? ask a mexican his opinion about quesadillas and then tell him he's wrong.

I thought we were talking about cartoons, Mexico has too much weaboos, anime is really popular here, that's why we are plagued with fans of DBZ and Naruto, as well as too much bronies and furries to be fair, any amount is too much

No, it's because Naruto and Bleach have more that would appeal to the type of person who would be really into Dragon Ball Z (visually cool characters, power level bullshit, etc.) as well as for fujos (lots of pretty boys). Some of the first characters revealed were the likes of King of Dinosaur and Nelson IIRC. But yeah, SNK is big in Mexico and South America because MVS machines were a whole lot cheaper than a typical arcade cabinet: one cabinet with multiple games where you only have to buy carts you can swap out vs. one cabinet and one game and having to buy a new cabinet for new games means poorfag countries ate it up.

Tom & Jerry, also the Pink Panther show have a larger-than-usual following in Germany due to their extravagant dubs.

German dubbing studios, the biggest and most elaborate worldwide due to german dub > sub policy, often took large liberties when adapting childrens or comedic material.

Pink Panther and Tom & Jerry got a narrator that commented on the cartoon in witty rhymes and puns, thick with wordplay.
They also got very distinctive theme/credits songs.

That gave the shows some sort of fable/bedtime story/beat poetry feel.

The Tom & Jerry TV format was also changed into a clipshow-style format to fill up the larger timeslot with multiple full shorts but keep a cohesive narrative.
They used the bit where Tom wants to make peace with Jerry and finds his memoirs, getting more angry with each story he reads.

(I think there's something deeply condescending/autistic/German behind not trusting your nations children to be able to "correctly" interpret a mostly wordless cartoon without explanatory narrative.
On the other hand it was really mentally engaging, genuinely witty - yet silly and playful, wordplay that was intellectually stimulating and still holds up after the years.)

Not /co/ related, the german dubbing also removed the laughtrack from "M.A.S.H." (increasing its quality tenfold) and put "Paint it black" as intro theme to "Tour of Duty" (also increasing its quality tenfold, somehow).

You have a much better time reading it if you can relate. And I don't mean army men, I mean conscripts in particular. Conscript culture is very special and quite different from professional army. It's mostly about doing as little work as you can, silly ways to pass the time, while also taking pride in finishing the service and obtaining combat skills rather than draft dodging.

Toei is keeping this franchise going for the Latin American fandom, which at this point is much bigger than the Japanese one. All the various Saint Seiya sequels we've seen in the last ten years are basically produced so they can be translated for South America.

Case in point: the Saint Seiya Omega anime got weak ratings in Japan, but ran for 100 episodes because that was the minimum needed for most South American networks to syndicate it (they actually made 97 episodes and created three clipshow episodes for the Latin market, but still.)

Too bad Omega was shit. Just rehashed old Seiya arcs with new characters who acted just like the old ones. Even the plot devices were the same. Sure, we're used to the supposedly invincible Gold Saints being useless in practice, but it feels a lot more contrived when those Gold Saints are the heroes of the previous series.

Soul of Gold was a much better sequel, since it let the Gold Saints actually do shit, and also had Norse gods.

Yes but it will take 23 episodes, at least three secret power unlocks and Krilin would die twice. Also, Mister Satan would take the credit and grab the bajillon pesos prize cash but it's OK because he would use the money to build a school and an irrigation system for the tiny village of Espaldamojadiville.

Finally, El Santo would PLANCHA Vegeta during the first fight to give Goku a vague idea of who is he going to face.
