Okay, so, first off:

That song was fucking amazing. I felt chills the entire fucking time. The music in this show, specifically S2, has become something really, really special. I have it on repeat right now.

Now, as to the state of things... It's so funny that everything with Ludo and Toffee and the Queen are the "b" plot in my mind compared to Star and Marco. I've been waiting for Toffee to come back, and while I knew he was influencing Ludo, no, I didn't catch the arm with the missing finger on the wand. Things got fucking DIRE in that last wizard fight, though, like, characters dying left and right. It's kind of dizzying how quickly and how much the stakes were raised in this show in such a short time.

Now, on to Starco. I'm really, really torn. Of course, I *want* it to happen, I want Star to be happy. But honestly, this is all her fault. She's been supportive of Jackie and Marco's relationship all the way to the very end, never even giving a hint of what she felt. And what's more, Marco is the *safe* kid. I'm not sure if he's attracted to Star's chaotic nature, and I can't say I blame him, as much as I like her.

Jackie is incredibly chill, and they just have incredible chemistry, probably some of the strongest I've seen in a show like this. They fit together very well, and I *want* them to be together.
So I've considered a couple scenarios:

The easy choice is that Starco will end up happening, somehow. But I'm getting increasingly convinced that may not happen... A theme of the whole show has been Star's maturing and learning that she can't just do whatever she wants, or *have* whatever she wants... And a very important moral lesson could be learned for both her and the show's intended audience if she learns to let Marco go, or at least stay friends. It could be a very good thing, actually.

If she does let Marco go, then I'm thinking Tom might step up to the plate. Say what you will about him, but he's *trying* to get better. Maybe the whole point is that he needs to find someone who accepts him for what he is like Janna, so I don't really have any idea there. I think he has a part to play yet.

And finally, Ludo, the little scrapper. His arc has been my favorite part of the second season, and I feel so bad that he's just been this pawn of Toffee's for so long. It's my hope that he bounces back and eventually takes Toffee down himself, and somehow reconnects with his family. He's a tough little SOB, and I really want him to have a happy ending.

The thing now is that I really want to know more about the lore behind Toffee and Star's mother. There's a lot of story there, and I hope we get it. I want to know what, exactly, Toffee wants, and how he intends to get it.

So yeah, that's my thoughts. Really enjoyed the second season like crazy, and I'm looking forward to the third like nuts. Shit's getting real.

I know that Starco will happen eventually. My biggest concern is how they will go about breaking up Marco and Jackie. I'd like to see something unique and different from the other thousand shows that have a similar love triangle dynamic. I really like Jackie as a character so I also hope the end of the relationship doesn't relegate her to the background cast.

Also, I'm curious how you feel about the fan theory that Toffee is a descendant of Eclipsa and her monster lover, and thus has a valid claim to the throne. He could also be Eclipsa's monster lover, as I'm not sold that the actual monster she eloped with decided to pose for the tapestry (the artist likely just improvised).

Either way, I really hope Eclipsa shows up next season. She seems super interesting.

Whether Starco will happen isn't just on Stars maturation- it's on Marco too. Being the "safe kid" is no way to live life, and it's implied 5 ways to sunday that he's going to have to grow out of that- just look at like the dream sequence from the start of Red Belt (S02E02b) for example. I'm pretty sure in S3 it's going to be a big deal for Marco whether he chooses to stay on Earth and have a safe life with Jackie, or if he chooses to take the risk of being by Stars side no matter what. Finally, we've seen a damn, damn lot of indications that Star and Marco are more suited for eachother- from the blood moon to them sharing favourite songs to being able to finish eachothers thoughts. The only issue is Marco returning that attraction or not- I think he was attracted to Star right from the start in at least some capacity but couldn't detach himself from the perfect ideal he had of Jackie in his head; and then he took Stars egging on of Jarco as validation that Star never would've returned those feelings anyway, so he put it out of his mind.

As for Toffee (and also Gloss) it really amazed me on a second rewatch just how much they were manipulating events in advance. Like in S02E01 for example, in My New Wand literally everything that happens there happened because of Gloss intending it to. And in LitW, that it was Toffee that both rescued Ludo from space, and caused the apparitions of Star to lead him to the wand.

No though I totally agree. I can totally see that happening. That's the only thing that's still running in the back of my mind on whether or not Starco is endgame. But right now, I sincerely don't think TOM is going to end up with Star. Of all the characters. He may be trying to get better, but he's trying for the wrong reasons. And he's still failing. At his core he's still a rotten brat. So if the show is going to make a moral lesson about letting a crush go, then it damn well better also make a moral lesson about NOT GOING BACK TO TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS.
And no other character comes even close to mind if I think about where Star gets a boyfriend. Sure you could argue she doesn't need one, but looking at the show now, there's going to be some "Where's your prince?" pressure.

Those are my thoughts on the shipping wars at least.

totally agreed. even as a starcofag I still really like Jackie. I did find her kind of boring in Season 1 because she seemed to have no personality and was just a plot device, but when we actually did get to know her in S2 she's actually really interesting and a really nice person. Whatever is endgame, all I know is that there is going to be a lot of suffering in store for us.

This is true. And I have thought about it too.
Marco will eventually go after Star. You say he doesn't know Star is in danger, but he also doesn't know why she left.
The constant pressure of not knowing why she left so abruptly and the ability to go looking for answers at any time will get at him. Add on top of that that he's suddenly left without the most interesting part of his life and you have a major reason for him to go looking for answers.
It's my opinion, and that doesn't mean much, but I think that Jackie would think so too. Stars abrupt exit would cause her to wonder and worry just the same. Star is still both their friend.
Marco would eventually not care about the awkwardness of the whole crush ordeal and would just want answers. He'd argue that he doesn't care about the stupid crush and just wants to know if Star is okay. If Jackie cares too much about the crush on Marco, then there's a divide there. Jackie can't pressure Marco too much or the relationship goes out the window. She has no way to stop him going after her.

I think part of it might be that Season 3 is mostly completed to the point of being ready to air this year, so to make up the difference for the long-ass gap between 1 and 2 they finished up the season quickly. 3 will be out in a couple months so it doesn't make too much difference in the long run (14 segments over 4 weeks vs. 8 episodes over 8 weeks).

That doesn't mean I want them to keep doing this for all the new episodes, but it was fun this time around and generated more hype for the show online than I've seen yet.

Not in the clichéd "you and Star are obviously meant for each other way, go with her" way, which maybe wouldn't be as offputting as her being suddenly jealous/aggressive but is still kind of awful. Just her noticing Marco always turns the situation to Star when they're together, maybe suggesting some time apart so Marco can sort things out or something.

Though I also hope they find a way to keep involving her in episodes like they have with Janna, as part of the friend group.

I want to approach Starco v Jarco from a slightly different angle. Concerning the three characters, it's very obvious that Star and Marco individually both have a lot of growing and maturing to do- Jackie not so much, she already has a very emotionally healthy mindset. Star's issue's largely relate to all the responsibility pre-ordained to her status as the heir to the Butterfly kingdom, as well occasional inconsiderateness and ignorance of other peoples feelings.

Marcos on the other hand are more about his anxiety, insecurity, and risk-averse approach to life. I want to talk about these, mainly Marcos, from the perspective of what kind of emotional growth each of the characters get out of Jarco v Starco.


The thing is that both Jackie and Star are very well equipped to help Marco grow out of his anxiety, though in fairly different ways. And that's true whether they're friends or in a romantic relationship, though it's more true for the latter.

For Jackie we've got the excellent examples of the parkbench and skateboarding scenes in Bon Bon. She's proven capable of helping Marco through his anxieties in a caring and non-judgemental manner.

For Starco, basically the entire central plot premise of the show, that there's this magical, rebellious girl diving headfirst into Marcos life, has provided a lot of opportunities for Marco to mature, and it has obviously been a struggle at times because of Stars occasional inconsiderateness, but he has come a damn long way since where he was at the start. And for example, the only reason he had the guts to go anywhere with Jackie was because of Stars consistent and sincere encouragement.

Now to flip it around.

Starco (and by that I mean both their friendship to date and potential romantic relationship) also has helped and can continue to help Star mature into being a better person- she's become a lot more considerate of other peoples feelings, and been learning more to consider the consequences of her actions before taking them, and just being more responsible in general. But both Star and Marco still have a long way to go individually.

The issue with Jarco, however, is that it is one-way in it's capacity for growth for its participants. Jackie doesn't really stand to gain a lot out of the relationship because she's already in a really good place emotionally. Now I'm not saying that this means it doesn't make sense for Jackie to be attracted to Marco, but it does mean they could have issues in their relationship moving forward if it remains so one-way. I've seen it happen in real life, hell I've been in a relationship where I was the Marco and my partner was the Jackie and it was exactly because of that dynamic that the relationship ended. It's just too much of a strain on a person to keep being that rock, the relationship can't help but become more like that of a carer and care-reciever (apparently there's not a better word for that).

I'm not saying any of this means that Jarco won't be endgame but it's worth thinking about. You can also make the argument from the other end that a Starco relationship would become unhealthily co-dependent. Or that Star could grow by getting over her crush- but I don't think that would teach the right/relevant lessons as it pertains to what she's actually struggling with elsewhere in her life.

I like where you're going with this and it really touches on what I think the show is about.
The show is about Star growing. Star is in the name and it's basically the entire premise.
Marco has become a very important part in the show as well, so important in fact that I can't even begin to imagine what the show would to if it were to separate them for a long length of time.
Jackie, really only comes into play as yet another way for Star to grow. Where this necessity to grow and deal with those problems takes her, we can't really say.

Honestly I hope that this isn't the case. Jackie is an interesting enough character that I hope she doesn't end up being solely a plot device to get things moving for the main characters. The hole Nefcys' got herself dug into though, is how can she make Starco canon (if that's her intention, which it probably is) without ruining Jackies character, or making her too one-dimensional, or making her do stuff that makes no sense for her to do.

There's art in the ability to make something seem like there's no way out without shit hitting the fan big time, while in reality there's actually only a few ways out that most can't see.

It's dancing on a knife edge and that's always an impressive sight. Always skirting something horrible to happen and always JUST avoiding it by using the one tactic that's not plainly visible to most. I feel like Nefcy's got this covered.

On one hand Jarco irks me because Jackie seems too perfect, too stable and too 'healthy' that it seems boring.
