The modern stuff isn't really any better, but it's at least more of an effort and looks marginally better. I wouldn't accept either, though.

Like, I know New X-Men by Craig and Yost is loved, but honestly, it came off as so mean spirited. Especially when you read the interviews and they go "Yeah, it's a shame, because we wanted to kill even more characters. Oh, btw, how awesome is X-23?" That's when it clicked why the run makes me so mad. It's all about fucking X-23. How she's tortured, how hurt she feels, how every other character has to kiss her boo boos. Wind Dancer depowered? Hellion gets to date X-23 now. Mercury captured? Now she gets to become closer friends to X-23! Oh no! Nasty Surge kissed Hellion! Now X-23 is cutting herself in the bathroom!

I've never seen a book that's crushingly depressing that's solely there to support the writer's pet. Well, except maybe Avengers Arena with how much it loves Cammi.

The general rule is, if there is a death in comics, and the characters won't shut up about it, that character will come back.

If a character is flat out forgotten and never mentioned again, they're dead.

Gwen Stacy was bound for this big return because they couldn't stop bringing her up yearly. Jean Grey as well that they fucking named the school after her! Even Alex from the Runaways came back cause they kept talking about him, and Gert will too if they keep mentioning her in a future Runaways book. Cassie Lang was gonna come back cause Scott Lang was getting a push and Cassie was so pivotal to his character.

Mettle? Juston? Wallflower? Tag? All those characters? They're fucking dead. Nobody cares to bring them up anymore in the story universe, so they won't come back. Even Elixir doesn't bring up his dead girlfriend. The fact that Wolverine goes back to the destroyed Xavier school and QQ is making a "Sentinels strike here" sign shows that nobody cared about all the dead X-Kids anymore.

Even living characters are forgotten! Rhodey's flesh and blood family didn't even show up to his own fucking funeral because the black Marvel heroes had to have big moments there!

I still think the 80's X-men "uniform" was the best one. Do they still have uniforms? I know at one point they copied the whole black leather look the movies did.

That and the other ones from that sequence (as well as what was done to Risk) irritated me, not out of any particular love for the characters but because they came off as needlessly meanspirited and more about shock value than anything. I remember some interviews, Johns was really adamant about having characters get killed because that was the only way he could show how powerful Superboy-Prime was or something in his mind. Pantha only got it because John's originally wanted to use Argent in that spot but got vetoed by Eddie Berganza due to Argent being his waifu.

Gehenna's death in Blackest Night is another one. Again, needlessly cruel and meanspirited and then just to drive it home Black Lantern Doctor Light basically wants to rape her corpse.

I have no clue if Johns has gotten any better but his propensity for shock value bullshit and needless gore is a huge reason I absolutely do not like him as a writer.

For Marvel, Rikki Barnes' death is complete and utter bullshit.
