I watched the whole thing with a friend, and there were a bunch of times the whole way through one or both of us would say "[this thing] is stupid and doesn't make sense. is it because it's just a bad show?" and then later on the thing would get explained and expanded upon and we'd both agree it was actually a great idea and we should have known it would come together. This kept happening, I think at least up to episode 8. You have to accept these kinds of details and be patient all the way up to the end before complaining. there were one or two things I was left confused about in the end, so I may give it a rewatch, especially since I wasn't paying attention at all in the first couple episodes because I was convinced I was going to drop it

The Netflix series is animated for an English voice over, but has multiple language dubs.

The original movies were Spanish, and I don't know if they have dubs. Also it's pretty much universally agreed they suck. Most people also agree the style is ugly as sin compared to the Netflix series, but there are a few who like the movies' style. That'll be up to you to decide. I find them hideous.

If you want context of the series' development history, go for it and try to hunt down the movies, but they're by no means necessary to enjoy the Netflix series at all.

I've been watching in Spanish without subs, and sometimes it can be hard (for me) to follow.

Too bad it was animated for the English dub. As a result, the lip syncing can be pretty noticeably off and the line pacing varies quite a lot.

I watched the series and I'm kind of wondering: is there anything in the movies that I should know for a little more context for the show? The beginning of the series felt odd to me, as though they had started in the middle of a number of stories with these characters. I thought it was weird they didn't show Leo meeting the ghosts and Alebrije and they just kinda brushed that off with the line "you guys just showed up at my house one day." Also, there seem to be some implication they had had at least one adventure before. There were other parts of the series I'd felt sort of left gaps, but it's possible I wasn't paying close enough attention. I don't want to watch the movies because they look shitty.
