Now someone unknown to this would have trouble guessing his age and not mistaking him as being much younger.

But this is a problem with all of the characters.
They've all lost those subtle traits in their depiction that gave the viewer a clue on their personality and age.

And those who were actually supposed to be tiny and adorable got "washed out" since now everyone is.

Madison's ham fistedness was more bringing attention to the fact that regardless of Paulo's recent thoughts or actions, he is completely oblivious to the fact Rachel is more than just a F-B and occasional friend.

It also served as a way to show that literally everyone but Paulo sees this as well. I think the angle being taken here is that everyone should expect Paulo to do the 'right' thing and officially date Rachel after all the things that have happened. She's bringing it up because it was implied her friends (Madison included) had a conversation about this with her in last chapter.

Why it might feel ham fisted is because we see more that goes on than everyone in the story does, and it makes sense for this to happen given the circumstances. However, also noting this is still high school, this might seem less predictable. I'd like to also point out that Paulo's supermassive love thing for Lucy has him play off like an ass, and I'm pretty sure no one else know he actually is in love with her.

Making this juicy love circle even better.

I won't disagree with Madison being a shity person though. She could really use some character development on why she is so yelly and opinionated at everything.

I think when it was originally introduced, it was meant to be as a way to signify that one particular couple didn't care about having their own kids.
It was basically the way she introduced a couple where they can't have kids, without involving real-life diseases that might make people uncomfortable.

Also the crossbreeding would have then raised a whole other set of questions regarding stuff like whether or not a dog/cat hybrid always lands on its feet, etc as those were included as gags in the past.

The more I re-read old stuff and then go back to the latest stuff, the more it seems Lucy is literally continuing where she left off just before "December" where she had started abandoning the lunch table and the friends since she was getting exhausted pretending everything was fine around them while Mike is sitting right across from her, happily texting Sandy.

Augustus being a neutral disinterested party took the pressure off Lucy and let her be herself, not fearing judgement or pity. They both shared the common thread of being rejected by the ones they loved the most, and in that, misery found company. It created a new distraction she could hide in. Which was an unhealthy way to deal with her shit.

Now she's back, and finding out Augustus is still around, she's doubling-down on that again. Politely accepting the fact that her friends are excited to see her again, but ultimately still trying not to get too close. Either because she needs time to adjust being back, or because it's "Mike's" friend group and you can't have one without the other. I like that Lucy so far has shown to be putting her Augustus efforts to positive ends, but I still think she's ultimately still using him as a distraction from dealing with her own problems.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. I wanted Lucy to be back and be a whole new person, not the depressed wreck she left as. But on the other hand, maybe it's better she didn't magically get better off-screen and we can instead see things progress in real-time instead of told through more flashbacks.

I still don't know the deal with giving Daisy the birthday gift. It uncharacteristically stands out. But I hope it shows that Lucy still gives a fuck about her friends, despite being distant.

What do Lucy and Augustus have in common the most besides being able to trade bantz? They're both fell in rut to screwing up their chances with their one true loves and accepting that their flaws major malfunctions can't be fixed.

Let's take Augustus, specifically. We're made to originally think he's just a creep and looking to put another notch on his belt. We later find that he sincerely cared for Daisy but had to frame of reference on how to convey it. He manipulates Daisy into going full slut-mode on Mike, which backfires, then he sweeps in from the shadows all like "See? Mike will never love you no matter how you act. Unlike me, who appreciates the true you."
Even if you discount the whole "rapey" kiss thing, it was a fucking shitty way to treat someone you care about. He betrays Daisy's trust as a result of him not knowing how to express his feelings in a healthy way. Lucy obviously ends up in the same boat. Her shitty personality of not being able to express her feelings properly ultimately caused Mike to turn to Sandy instead, and then things just regressed from there. Both Lucy and Augustus consider themselves broken and reserved to just living with their regret.

So, what if taking this into account. Seeing that DaisyxAbbey ship is sunk. Lucy decides "Fuck it, at least one of us should be happy!" and ultimately plays wingman for Augustus. Helping him repair the broken trust with Daisy and redeeming him in the process. Even if it doesn't lead to DaisyxAugustus in the end, it would help put his regrets behind him.

It'd be a cool way to see Lucy continue to put her efforts to more positive ends and maybe learn more about herself in the process. Then use that experience to help herself move forward as well.

As much as I love the theories and discussion about how deep these characters' mental problems and relationship issues are, let us not forget that this is comic is merely a shallow high school drama that hides said shallowness with extreme melodrama and ridiculous plotlines.
Were this written by a talented author, all of the speculation and past events would be relevant, but it's not.

Sure she does. She's spunky and irreverent much of the time but surprisingly emotionally mature and a beacon of support for those she loves. I agree that his method was fucking effective in showing that pining over Mike would end in heartbreak. And from a purely logical viewpoint, teaching by example is by far the best way to get a point across.

What I think was shitty was that he intentionally played on Daisy's insecurities and set her up for failure. Then berated her for not knowing better. There's no way you can build a healthy relationship on something like that. Daisy trusted him and got her self-esteem shredded in the process.

Augustus tried to go about things the only he knew how. And he admits that he's a fuckup who doesn't know how to be straight with people. He's only lucky in the sense that Daisy understands that Augustus had a shitty upbringing, and somehow still has some sympathy for him. But if he wants to re-build that trust, it's going to take a lot of work.
