Because it wasn't done in a way that was respectful to the characters. On top of the whisper setup being stupid, the final arc of God of Thunder was Thor's extended supporting cast getting run out of town. Add to that the future Thor scene where he acts like Jane Thor was something to be ashamed of. There was zero reason to like and respect Mighty Thor going in.

Thor loses his hammer/stops being worthy over a whisper, Odin, the guy who made the hammer work in the first place suddenly can't lift it himself. It's dumb because it's fucking arbitrary.

Compare it to Dan Jurgens run where Thor also became unworthy and lost the power to lift his hammer. That was awesome, because we actually got to see Thor's fall from grace, and entire year worth of stories building up to that moment and the scene of him being unable to do it is fucking metal.

With Jason Aaron, we had the author himself spend a 25 issue run explain the reader how Thor was basically the second coming of jesus, showing him going around the world, saving people, helping the poor, visiting veterans and nuna and monks, only for the hammer to go "lol, nope" on him.

this is all a last second switch, I think. I'm pretty sure that the idea was that there would be two thors with two different hammers, but i think the winds have shifted and marvel wants to get back to more 'core' interpretations, post secret empire, so the ending of unworthy changed, setting up a story where thor is just thor again. they'll probably do something where jane gets the ultimate hammer and takes a different name, or something.

Odin not being able to lift the hammer is a new retcon because he had always had total control over it and the enchantments on it never affected him at all. This new thing about Odin not being able to move it or control it is all new just for this story and it makes no sense.
