They were a costumed hard rock band in the 70s who ended up having a huge nerdy following of young boys lending themselves to crap like toys, comic books, and movies etc, they continued into the 80s as a sort of heavy metal version but kind of overshadowed by the younger hair metal bands until the mid 90s when they reunited with the original lineup and since then have pretty much been reenacting their shtick from the 70s

This is exactly what I like about them, not because of any marketing or pro capitalist standpoints but just because they have for the most part remained a band who likes to be celebratory and represent the good times, especially in more modern eras when the stereotype of rock music has become just people who sing about how much life sucks
