Not that I have a strong opinion on the proposed MMX FPS, but a proof-of-concept prototype for a video game is equivalent to a pitch video or pilot episode for a TV show. They rarely ever resemble the final product and tend to look like shit more often than not. They're usually made with the intent on selling an idea to someone, not to be presented to the public as what to expect. If they are to be presented publicly, they're usually much more refined.
>>
>>90919445
It would be one thing if the details weren't fleshed out, and were merely placeholders, but you DO NOT MAKE placeholders so full of character if the proposed pitch was going to do something else entirely. They clearly had a set direction in mind, and Capcom was right to say "this doesn't feel like something we want."

If they wanted to make an un-fleshed out pitch that was just "3D FPS Megaman X" then they easily could have. And if THAT was the pitch that got shut down, sure, I'd be upset.

The Ruby Spears cartoon was stupid, poorly animated, and sometimes nonsensically written... but it was a decent relic of its time and decently accurate to the games.

The Battle Network cartoon was formulaic shonen trash and a waste of some of the franchise's best designs (fuck you, BN 1-3 are amazing) but it was watchable and at least stayed true to the series.

This... this doesn't look very good. But! It does look better than the early materials made it out to be. Remember how bad TFA looked before the first episode made it to air?

Keep in mind, video games were a new medium. Back in the Atari era, nobody gave a shit if a yellow blip was supposed to be a media icon. And once games were advanced enough to LOOK like something, companies pioneering this new frontier weren't going to pay out the nose to secure the rights to major established franchises when they could make their own. Similarly, being the new kid on the block, major franchises weren't looking to get their name in 8-bit format right away because video games're "just toys for kids."

Potential profits changed everyone's mind pretty quickly though. Still, companies that didn't act fast enough just got ripped off instead.

Why is he named Aki, anyway? He already HAD a civilian name. He's Rock. He's always been Rock.

Getting rid of the music puns is unforgivable.

As a long time Megaman fan, with Command Mission as one of my all time favorite games, I can't tell you how much losing the chance at those characters returning hurt. The cast in that game was so colorful and lively, it was a damn crime to throw them all away after one appearance.

I feel the same way about the X8 navigators. Who were also returning for Megaman Online, coincidentally.

Now that's not fair. It was genuinely novel when he did it.

>It would be one thing if the details weren't fleshed out, and were merely placeholders, but you DO NOT MAKE placeholders so full of character if the proposed pitch was going to do something else entirely.
You don't make a pitch thinking you're going to make something else entirely. Projects shift over time based on who is making decisions and what the project needs to do in order to survive, and a lot of times even that isn't enough.

>They clearly had a set direction in mind,
All pitches do. I can't picture how you'd pitch something without one. It's meant to sell an idea, no represent the final product (assuming there ever is one).

> and Capcom was right to say "this doesn't feel like something we want."
Of course they were. But they would have been just as right to say "This is exactly what we want."

I don't have a strong opinion towards the prototype itself. I don't think it has enough to say whether it would have been good or not (as pitches/proof-of-concepts rarely ever do in my opinion). It convey an idea, which it did. It seems to be a polarizing idea though, which is probably why it didn't get passed the prototype.

What I do know about the prototype is that it came around when Keiji Inafune was working on several other Mega Man projects at once, the most significant to the fanbase being Mega Man Legends 3. However, that guy loved putting Mega Man into different genres and is pretty much the only reason that Mega Man even managed to exist through the 00's thanks to the myriad of handheld titles he was involved with, like Battle Network(Capcom's pokemon), Zero (expanding the traditional MM affair), ZX (Mega Man meets Metroid), Legends (Legend of Zelda: Mega Man Edition), and continuing the originals with 9 and 10. I know there were some spin-offs he produced that didn't hit it quite as big, but the point is it's not really surprising he would attempt to tackle the FPS genre at some point, especially since it was, and is very prominent.
>>
>>90936954
If Retro wanted to gain steam with the project, they should have pitched a game that looked and felt like the franchise they were handling. They did it for Metroid Prime. They should have done it for X. Instead they pitched Call of Duty with a subtle aftertaste of Blue Bomber.

We agree on one thing. A first person Megaman isn't inherently bad. But the audacity to throw out everything that made him Megaman probably didn't convince anyone it was right for the brand. They blew the pitch. I can't blame an executive for not seeing a morsel of goodness in a heap of turds. I'm convinced it all went down like this because they had no love of the property.

If Capcom makes a Megaman FPS, more power to them. As long as it at least somewhat feels like Megaman. Otherwise just don't put his name on the box.
>>
>>90937099
Actually, I was just reading it and the idea behind the pitch was apparently to appeal to a new audience, not the existing one. So there's that. It was made with the mindset to grab the attention of another group. From that perspective, I can understand more what they were going for with the different direction. Given this was during the time that Capcom was trying to get a slice of that sweet, sweet Call of Duty pie, and giving their existing IPs to western devs (DmC, Lost Planet 3), it's a bit surprising they DIDN'T go for it. Though perhaps there might have been a stigma attached to it being Mega Man still sort of being their de facto mascot. Or hell, maybe they just thought "You're making like 3 Mega Man games already. That's enough." Who knows.
>>
>>90937177
>From that perspective, I can understand more what they were going for with the different direction.
Good riddance to that audience then. I'm glad I don't have to share Megaman threads with kids raised on 360 competitive shooters.

And if Megaman wasn't dead in the water (cartoon not withstanding) I wouldn't want to compete with that side of the audience for the next new title, over whether it should be catered to original fans or them. Had it been successful it would have been even harder to get Capcom to put the franchise back on the old track.

There's a reason going for a "broader audience" is such a slur on /v/.
>>
>>90937234
It depends. I really wouldn't have put it passed the Armature Studios guys to have been intending to tackle the genre with their own spin. Again, you really can't tell with proof-of-concept stuff well. I didn't even know what the fuck Recore was supposed to be for the longest time. When I got my hands on it though, I could feel their experience from having worked so closely with a Japanese game studio (Nintendo) for so many years was still present. When I sank my teeth into it, I was able to say "Yeah, this is definitely from the Metroid Prime guys."

As for the Mega Man cartoon, they're obviously making a new game otherwise that wouldn't be happening at all. My expectations for it are that it's not going to be a game made for me, but for someone new who might grow up with Mega Man seeing it in another way. Much like the intents were behind Sonic Boom and Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures (though hopefully better than those games were). Given that I have like a 100 fucking Mega Man games at this point, I'm really not going to complain about it. I know the reputation the guy has now, but without Inafune serving as the series producer anymore I'm not really sure what I could hope from a new Mega Man title. But then again, I have been highly pleased with Capcom's modern takes on their older sidescrolling games (Bionic Commando Rearmed and Strider 2014), so maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. Won't hold my breath though.

>As for the Mega Man cartoon, they're obviously making a new game otherwise that wouldn't be happening at all.
See, I would have assumed this in the past. It's the logical thing to do, right?

...and yet, Capcom didn't use Megaman's inclusion in a game as high profile as Smash Bros. as incentive to make their own game around that time frame. They could have even scuttled Inafune's Kickstarter by proving to disenfranchised fans that they still plan on using the franchise. The damage done to his faux product would have been substantial had the real deal suddenly surfaced.

This tells me Capcom does not like money, or just does not like Megaman. Regardless of which is the truth though, one thing is certain. You cannot count on Capcom to do the smart thing.
>>
>>90932478
kinda funny how many of those have a direct analogue with later Robot Masters
>>
>>90937486
I actually suspect it was Mega Man´s inclusion in Smash that prompted them to look into revitalize the series, as my understanding is that Mega Man became significantly more popular with children once that game came out. It´s most likely not a matter of just getting a new game out in time, but attempting to reestablish the franchise for young blood that don´t have such a strong familiarity with it, which can take considerably more time. If I were to put on my executive hat here, I´d probably consider what could be done to ensure a "new" Mega Man franchise would connect with that crowd for a 3-5 year plan. Though I doubt I'd have thought Mega Tron X here would have been a good idea unless I had some considerably convincing numbers to consider.

That's what Ono has been saying at least. I'm afraid that if it does somehow get through the pipeline, none of its original charm will remain though. With the success of Street Fighter you just know they'd fundamentally change it to be "Street Fighter but with Monsters."

Modern Capcom is a real bitch.

In Megaman X series.

>>90937773
But considering that robot masters of the first series have more or less human appearance and (according to comics and other media) personalities, it safe to assume Dr. Light was planning his robots to work along with humans.
So it is possible he was planning to integrate robots to human society.
Rock/Aki could be used as test-drive mode (in this timeline).

And every young boy should have opportunity to make friends of his age, even he is a robot
