Definitely all-ages. Romance is handled maturely and it does a good job showing the issues the arise from having lived in a tower all your life.

That's pretty much every Disney and Marvel movie right now. It's a very polished kind of nonsense. But there's no point complaining about it, because it's exactly what people want, and I can't fault Disney for providing shallow escapism and making bank. They're quite good at it. It's only annoying when people claim it's any more than that.

I'm just going to focus on the stuff I do like, which is all the pretty drawings, and the thinly veiled shipping fodder the crew managed to squeeze in. Love of porn acquaints a man with strange bedfellows.

Given the mandate that she must have long hair (for marketing purposes), they did about a good a job as could be expected for an explanation:

The track record is not favorable.

Disney shows based on movies or princesses don't get much traction here, and I think for good reason. They tend to be trite, blatantly commercial or pandering, and their humor is timid. The fantasy they've constructed around princesses is synonymous with the brand, and these shows go through so many approval processes that any edge or personality is scrubbed out of them. There's little to discuss for anyone outside the 4-8 age group these shows are targeted towards.

The movie shows a deep love for the groundwork that the first movie set. I feels like a labor of love in a lot of ways. I'm excited to see Rapunzel adapt to her new surroundings, and if the gothel episode is just her having ptsd than I'm psyched.

The main concern I had with a tangled follow-up would be handling the romance and emotional issues after the first, and the movie handled it gracefully. I don't know how they'll keep doing it, but if they do, my expectations have already been blown away.

I really hope that this neither goes on longer than it needs to, or gets cancelled before properly finishing and bringing us up to Tangled Ever After like the opening promises it will. I'm not even all that invested yet, but I really want to know how Raps gets rid of her magical hair in time for her wedding.

I guess if they really wanted to continue the series indefinitely, though, they could start a season that takes place after the wedding and have her grow back her hair again, but that would be even more stupid than growing it back in the first place, which was hard enough to swallow.

The duality of their goals works really well considering their experiences up until this point have been so opposite. Rapunzel was stuck trapped in a tower dreaming of going out to see the world, but meanwhile Eugene was out having trying adventures as a thief, dreaming of the day he could finally settle down. Now by a turn of fate Eugene has been miraculously given everything he's ever dreamed of: a big castle surrounded by riches where he'll never have to do anything ever again. It's really no wonder he can't imagine why anyone would be dissatisfied with that.

I really hope they spend some time on Rapunzel also coming around to better understanding Eugene's point of view as well as Eugene figuring out hers. At least Eugene straight out told her exactly what he wants in life with his proposal, so she knows that, but I'm not sure she really grasps why. She even interrupted him when he was about to launch into his own backstory to bring him back to the focus on her own, and I'd like to see his story get addressed too. With a whole series, I think they'll have time for both, though obviously Rapunzel is the face and gets higher priority.

Because Punzie sells more dolls. The show is gratefully not overly girly, but the driving factor is to market a product, and that product is firmly placed in the pink aisle of the toystore.

They can both be main characters, but like I said, the opening narration is Rapunzel's story and Eugene is in it, not their story together. That's, I think, the groundwork of the show. This is mostly going to be from Raps's perspective, but luckily Eugene is a big part of her life and will probably receive due focus.
