Manhunter #25
The solo adventures of Kate Spencer come to a stunning conclusion-but her new life as a dark hero has only just begun! Final issue.

Thank you Didio

We know return to Single Female Lawyer, starring Kaye Spencer, with special guest star Diana of Themyscira.

And oh joy, it's yet another damn crossover. Let's hope this one is at least not intolerably painful.

The more I think about it, the more it's that it's not that he's trying to be manipulative, it's that it lays bare the real Slott--the desperately clinging manchild who knows that corporate could fuck him at any time, but is trying to fortify himself against the essential exigency of his life's work.

If you wanna look with a little bit of irony, it can kind of be a send-up of the "annoying comic relief gets laid" in general because Dylan is shown as just as unpleasant as he really is. But honestly everyone in this comic is a little bit extra flirty so I wouldn't be confident in that reading.

Reading this page I'd totally be down for a secret justice league filled with certain superheroes who hunt down unapologetic murderous villains who somehow always manage to get away with it. It sorta almost happened in the JSA with Black Adam but that went nowhere.

I'm not sure who else would be in the team though, I feel like every hero willing to take a life was subtly taken out of existence.

Quitely is just stupendously good at that. You see not the same type of character but a similar expression OF character from him all the time, like right now very much in the Jupiter's thing he does with Millar. A lot of it is in the body language IMO.

It's a tremendously fine line. I'm currently reading Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell's Zenith, which also has a similar team of 60s hippie superheroes, and a lot of what makes it work is that you then get to see what becomes of them. They're characters in and of themselves, instead of being a bunch of one-dimensional 60s References (tm).

Honestly, if it were me, I'd go full dark humor and make it so Huntress is the one constantly trying to get the rest of the team to try to stop her. But in a serious sense, I can imagine Helena being a problem because she keeps trying to get everyone to go slaughter mobsters and dons and such, while the rest are focused on just a handful of supervillains. So Helena wants to make it a permanent thing while the others just want to do, say, ten or twelve guys and hopefully never have to do it again.

>My worry is that I read in the drawings a falsified, artist-born permissiveness which has been expected of me and which I cannot perform as it is contrary to my sense of life. And I also read an equation of this specifically, personally appalling permissiveness with the subject of the drawing, which is almost always suggested to be “an attractive woman.” My rejection of the art and any argument for its merit is visceral, because the art is communicating a demand (a demand) that I have encountered and suffered from. If art asks a question, my response in these cases is no. But art doesn’t only ask a question; art suggests statements, answers questions too.

His men are usually of the "suffering friend" variety, where they're supportive and thoughtful and caring but ultimately can't really do much to keep his heroines from self-destructing. Save for a few cases like Crispus Allen, where they are one of the main things keeping his heroines from self-destructing.
And yeah, Rucka made his bones writing Queen and Country, Whiteout, Gotham Central, a lot of hard-bitten and tough but also very believable characters. But now that's become his comfort zone.

Not exactly inaccurate, but not entirely fair either.

Anyway, that's what I like about language, it morphs and transforms in so many ways across time: country matters and boner, if you're looking for a laugh, queer and colored, if you're looking for something more serious. It gives words subtext, which can either be played straight or subverted. It's great IMO.

Queer for me are the flamboyant people, with colored hair and high pitched voice and flannel shirts or just full drag queen. Gay just means you fuck the same gender, but queer means the gay furry dildo subculture. And they are unbearable

Maybe he just needs a different kind of book? I remember during New Krypton I didn't mind his religious stuff though Thara and Chris weren't exactly strongly characterized (and I was bootyblasted by aging him up too). Though of course once you build a rep, financially maybe it's best to stick with what you do well enough.

If there are two things that people seem to not like on this board, it is side-cuts for hair, and dyed hair. The Batwoman Rebirth thread had someone complaining about her side-cut (even though it was justified in the story), and the Elektra #1 had people upset by the barmaid having violet hair

People these days

I think it's less about trying a different kind of book and more about reconnecting with how he used to write characters. Tara Chace and Renee Montoya work because despite following similar lines, you can see where they're coming from and where they're going. But nowadays, those strong characterization beats are getting drowned in decompressed storylines, wonky world-building, nothing arcs and, yeah, repetition. A lot of what he writes nowadays feels like it's on auto-pilot and at very slow speed.

I always love the "multiple tiers" of superhero society present in this comic. Its something I wish comic universes would do more often. Too frequently everyone knows everyone and they're all on the same level but it really shouldn't be that way. If Superman or Batman walks into the room it should make all the street level unknown heroes gawk as they're literally living legends and should be treated as such.

If the CEO of a billion dollar company walks into the same room as the cubical workers everyone knows something has happened and it alters the state of everyone in it. If Gangbuster is running around and Superman floats out of nowhere he won't play it off as nothing special.
>>
>>90874549

Let's agree to disagree.

Also, in what way are those "unfeminine"? And furthermore, how is that relevant?

I'm reading the Illuminated Comics tumblr for the first time, and man is Marvel really that predictable? They have a page about the Fall 2017 lineup that is very, very close to the books that are actually coming out.

Two of the Manhunters (Kate and Mark). Any white cape that's served in Suicide Squad. Probably a few of the Outsiders, Red Hood, Artemis, maaaybe Bizarro.

Annd, I dunno. Killer Capes don't really strike me as interesting unless they're some kind of villain protagonist, ala Foolkiller.
