The Earth 2 one was a full disappointment.

So does the person that's doctor fate get any control or does Nabu call the shots? I think it would be pretty cool to be doctor fate if you can have a life too but it seems like being doctor fate is more of a necessary curse type of thing

Nabu is a gone entity that offers knowledge if you reach deep into the helm's power, but Fate is a separate entity from the wielder, it manifests as an autonomous HERO persona after putting the helm.
Nabu lives in the helm and takes full control of the body.
Nabu offers advice, from the helm, but the user is free to act.
Nabu offers advice, from outside the helm, but the user(s) is free to act.
The user(s) is(are) free to act and can tap into the helm's knowledge with Nabu gone.

I liked Kalid, up until the New52 I only really knew Fate from group stuff and guest appearances. Has any version shown up in Rebirth?

Earth 2 Khalid was cool at first but was an unfortunate victim of how terrible earth 2 got. Main Earth Khalid seemed fine but I didn't finish Levitz's Dr. Fate
