I think that when Shiro used the black bayard it triggered a trap set by King Alfor that teleported him to some random ass-end of the galaxy. Real fuckin' galaxy far far away type shit.

Alfor had the motive, the means and the opportunity to set up such a trap as a fail safe in case Zarkon ever got the Black Lion back.

MOTIVE: This is the biggest one. Before he died, Alfor knew that Emperor Zarkon still had a strong connection to the Black Lion and also that he had the black bayard in his possession. Alfor assumed that if a Galra (or someone outfitted with Galra technology) were to pilot the Black Lion AND use the bayard, it was HIGHLY likely to be Zarkon himself. If this happened, that would mean all hope was lost as Zarkon had regained control of Voltron. Setting a one time boobytrap to separate Zarkon from the Black Lion should the worst happen would give anyone fighting Zarkon a golden opportunity take back Voltron in his moment of triumph, and thus keep him from controlling perhaps the only force that could challenge his rule.

Alfor knew Zarkon personally, so he probably also knew that Zarkon would have a humongous blind spot for that Lion. It's a really good fail-safe plan.

MEANS: Alfor was the King of the Alteans, the race most associated with quintessence and wormhole portal technology. We know that the Lions have enough quintessence to open a portal without Altean royalty on hand. Given his civilizations expertise in the field and the Lion's power source, it's not a huge stretch to think that Alfor would have the means to sneak a trap door portal into the Black Lion somewhere no one's going to notice until its too late.

OPPORTUNITY: Alfor had most of the Lions scattered around all over the place, but Black is the only one he kept right at the home base. It was practically sitting in his garage for a while before he got himself killed. Plenty of time to crack that bad boy open and install a 10,000 year middle finger to Big Z.

I think someone will definitely have to pilot Black, at least for a while. I expect it to be Allura and I'm kind of hoping she's singularly awful at it. To the point where it will be a big deal that she has to give up, at which point they either find Shiro or stumble across someone else that's compatible with Black or one of the other Lions.

I really don't expect Shiro to be back in S3, and I do not foresee an entire season with no Voltron. I could of course be wrong about that, but with the huge amount of build up it would seem anticlimactic. That and they got everyone back really fast after the Season 1 finale. Would they really do the exact same thing twice in a row? Especially after leaving the Lion and Bayard conveniently behind this time around.

Maybe. Keith is going to freak out nice and early. I think it will be Pidge that snaps him out of it, by using his own words against him. I think Shiro is going to he stuck in plot storage and used only for flashbacks and dream sequences until roughly late S4~early S5. And when he gets back, rather than going back to piloting his old Lion, he'll be tapped to lead the newly completed Earth Voltron. Then both he and Keith can both be leaders of their own team and thus equals.

Or maybe he'll be back by mid S3 and we'll maintain the status quo. Who knows?

I've seen plenty of shows like this where the main cast gets shaken up, prominent characters exit the stage and others are raised to prominence in their place, and it worked out great. Kept things nice and fresh. I've seen shows try that and become a mess. I've seen shows work with the same composition forever (very common in western cartoons) and either thrive or stagnate.

Right now we're at the crossroads. It could go either way.

this isn't the issue so much as it will require either an existing character to fill the role or for them to add a new character who does. as much as I like the CORAN RIDER meme, either him or allura doing it would be a total ass pull, and the main cast is already getting a bit bloated as it is. an entirely new paladin would require a lot of plot real estate to play catchup to the rest of the cast, and I just don't think the writers have the chops to pull it off in a satisfying way

Four more seasons though. You really think they don't have the ground to bring in a satisfying replacement and gradually build them up when the show isn't even half done yet? And considering how long it took most of the main cast to start getting Lion power ups (not very), unless one thinks "Black Lion is sacred and belongs only to Shiro because of that dream sequence where it picked him over Zarkon," it is not hard to imagine someone else bonding with it with Shiro MIA. Hell, that's an easy plot hook, having the new pilot confront the Lion's memory of Shiro. Sounds like a retread? That depends on what it adds to the character in question. The Zarkon situation was clearly different, with him actively trying to take it back.

This is all easy stuff for a creative writer. With the time left in the show and given prior events the groundwork is already laid for plenty of ways to ease someone into the gap left by Shiro while also focusing on other things.
