The arc ends on a triumphant note with the creation of Lordran, and the ushering in of a new golden age. We get to know the lords and their friends as real characters.

The last scene of season one is the chosen undead being dropped into lordran, transitioning abruptly from the triumph and optimism to seeing the same Lordran landscape fallen into ruin.

The rest of the show is told in a back and forth way, showing the seeds of ruin begin to be sown in the past, drawing focus to characters in the past such that their arc climaxes in time with the chosen undead dealing with them or the fallout of their actions in the future. So named boss fights for the chosen undead should either be tragic (you care about the boss and seeing their death is sad) or cathartic (that fucking asshole had it coming).

Let the chosen undead actually interact with other characters and have dialog and shit, but allies and traveling companions are temporary. Either the mists separate them time and again, or they go mad, or they suffer some other terrible fate along the way. By the time you reach the kiln of the first flame, all of the chosen undead's friends and allies are gone.

So the final fight is between the main characters of the two respective seasons, both of whom have lost everything to be here.
