Pre-Hydrox, he was just a dude who hated having random bullshit foisted on him. He didn't hate DOING things (considering he would often go along with Joel's plans when Joel was up front about them, like the time they quested for the World Gems or the time they went into the Internet), he just didn't like being forced into retarded plots with no warning. Combine that with his generally being TERRIBLE with the ladies, and you've got Phil Argus.

Post-Hydrox, I have no fucking idea. He sort of became an avatar for Matt Wilson at this point, openly disgusted with the world around him and the characters within. It's bizarre, the second they landed back on Earth Phil began to take this weirdly-nihilistic approach to everything he did. It started off innocently enough, just getting upset at random characters and trying to return to his post-space life, but near the end he was willing to alienate everyone around him and destroy the world for what amounted to petty grievances.

Of course, this destabilization of the character came around the same time that Matt Wilson stopped giving a shit about the series, so trying to figure out what Phil's fucking problem was seems kind of a moot point.

Yes I was, I started watching after Fist World.

Pretty big, I'd say a big glut of the fanbase came from Newgrounds (although I learned later that Something Awful was a big chunk as well, since Matt Wilson was a goon). It never reached Homestar Runner levels of popularity but it was enough that Wilson was able to make some decent side cash from shirt sales.

Irritation with the fans, mostly. He and the fanbase were always on rocky terrain, but after episode 75 the amount of complaints pouring in regarding the updated art caused him to adopt a very "I don't give a shit about this anymore" attitude. He was probably tired of Bonus Stage by that point as well but he was the most vocal about his annoyance at his fans being the reason for Bonus Stage's demise. There was a brief period of time where a fan had offered to pay Wilson to finish the series, but when the fan backed out he axed the series after trying to glean some chump change by releasing half of episode 89 on Newgrounds and providing a link to a site where you could pay to view the rest of the episode.

The state of Matt Wilson makes me sad, honestly. I think a big part of that was when he found out there was another Matt Wilson working in the animation industry who kept having trouble getting work, because everyone mistook him for the guy who would pop into Toon Zone forums to post "This is the worstest show since Rave Master" in the MegasXLR talkbacks.
