i think you have it backwards. the entire point of daffy duck is that he wants to be the main star so bad, that in order to upstage bugs, he engages in self destructive behavior and upstages himself as well as bugs. when bugs appears to upstage daffy, the joke begins when daffy overcompensates, thus becoming the centerpiece for the joke
