These are genuinely the most bizarre ratings in months so I'm assuming DST had something to do with it. I expect Jack to get better ratings over the next few weeks as word of mouth spreads.

For what it's worth I saw a lot of people on my twitter feed who normally don't watch Toonami tweeting about Jack, I think my favorite was a roomful of Final Round casuals stopping to watch the show.

The dropoff wasn't normal. Super's ratings were within the norm but the middle of the block collapsed. The lowest ratings Unicorn and HxH had gotten before were in the low 600s. Ratings went back to normal with Naruto, One Piece somehow managed to get great retention even, guess people turned out after hearing it was ending its run.

Read the manga. The anime is more than 50% filler (despite being only 24 episodes) and is one of the worst adaptions I've ever seen.

Basically, first season is average. Second season is a complete disaster, almost entirely filler (based on some ideas by the author which weren't good enough to get into the manga) an obvious rushjob because the studio couldn't wait until there was more manga to adapt. The result was a season so poorly received it basically destroyed the franchise. It's still a relatively popular manga but its potential to be more than that is basically dead.

Not quite SAO-level terrible, but it's close.

HxH on the other hand...They were probably hoping it would have had the appeal Yu Yu Hakusho did on Toonami back in the day. They were wrong.
Both the waifu AND husbando game are much weaker than YYH, the setting isn't as fun, most of the villains are bland and unmemorable, and while Yusuke was a fun, likable son of a bitch street tough with a heart of gold, Gon just falls kind of flat in the personality department. Especially this early in the series.
Hell, YYH reruns would probably outperform HxH.

I don't see it lasting the full 148 episodes.

Toonami's ratings as a whole were higher back when IBO was airing and it wasn't because of the murderhobo. IBO was often pegged as the weak-link of the night that saw some pretty bad retention from it's lead-in. Not as bad as Jojo's, but people were calling for it to be moved later into the night.

I am a huge Gundam fan, but for fuck's sake let's be real here. IBO wasn't a draw for the block. The fact it generated little buzz outside of the Gundam fanbase should have been a huge warning sign. People aren't going to flock back to it just because Toonami airs season 2. The show had one chance to make it's mark, to get people hooked and it blew it.

The Saiyaman arc is great because low stakes and superhero shenanigans, it's just fun and introduces Videl, who has great chemistry with Gohan and the family. I've always been a sucker for those types of superhero stories where the hero is trying to keep his identity a secret and the Saiyaman Arc is basically just that. By contrast the Buu arc is just a string of dull fight scenes interrupted only by a couple somewhat interesting fight scenes. Seriously, once you already know the outcome of the fights there's absolutely no tension in any of them and they're not interesting to watch at all.

Honestly, this current arc that we're in is probably the high point; aside from a single episode lull in the middle, the action starts here. If there's people still out here that dislike the show after York Shin, then you won't hear me asking you or anyone else to give it a shot.

It's probably the drastic difference in tone, style, and and pacing. YYH was more typical battle shounen, but it excelled at what it did. It hit familiar notes but it hit them in a satisfying way. It still holds up even years later.

HxH by comparison was written as an off-beat battle shounen. It's not this total deconstruction or reversal of battle shounens, it's more like it follows the same track then all of a sudden will juke the expected outcome. In the early parts that usually ends up being anticlimaxes, since it frequently builds up to a typical shounen confrontation then usually deflates or changes tack sharply to avoid it. Later on it becomes less about playfully jerking the reader's expectations around and more focused on actual drama and tension, but still structured in a way that denies the usual shounen track. Again it's not radically subversive or anything, it's just different enough that unless you're very familiar with battle shounen manga it's hard to recognize what he's even doing with the story. For most of the Toonami audience, with its limited exposure to anime and manga, it probably just seems like a big anticlimactic mess and it's hard to even explain the appeal to them because they are still so attached to their shounen cliches and conventions.

I think it's more IBO is going to be considered overrated, much like SEED. The parallels are there.

See, back in the day Gundam SEED was making big waves online through fansubs. People liked what they saw, and it developed a reputation as a modern-masterpiece among the online and otaku communities at the time. There were even articles in North American anime magazines at the time calling it the greatest Gundam ever. And not to mention they both followed a Tomino Gundam that was considered a flop at the time.

But when they bring it to the West, specifically Toonami, the show flopped. At the halfway point of SEED it was moved to very late into the night, 2am iirc. Now, to be fair it wasn't entirely SEED's fault either as the show was subjected to numerous edits in order to obtain a Y-7 rating so it could be marketed towards kids.

Flash forward to today and look at what happened. IBO made a splash on anime websites, got good press and reviews, came after a Tomino anime that ANN insisted was a flop despite all the evidence to the contrary, and people were saying it is the greatest Gundam of all time.

And then you get into the devide in the fanbase over IBO Season 2. An improvement with Tekkadan facing real challenges, or just bullshit writing that shits on Tekkadan. There are some echoes of Destiny going on, at least from my perspective.

G-Reco would get complaints about people not understanding what's going on, but I think there would be at least some people who would be entertained by it and it would develop a reputation for being a crazy ride. I love the show, but I do acknowledge the validity to some of the complaints people have about it.

On Greed Island there's two main parts where Gon shows he's fucked in the head, the more crazy one is when he decides to deviate from an established plan to see how far he can push himself and ends up sacrificing one of his hands just to prove he could hold out longer or something. And by that I mean his hand was gone, almost up to the elbow, blown clean off with bone jutting out and everything. They manage to use the game's Nen to fix it later, but at the time he didn't know that was possible and he considered it a fair trade. There's another part in Greed Island, but explaining it is more complicated, but basically it shows Gon is not only willing to sacrifice himself, but others in order to win.

Chimera Ant arc he goes Kurapika levels of edgy because his friend Kite is killed by one of the elite Ants, and it drives him into a murderous rage and he becomes obsessed with finding and killing the Ant responsible, becoming so single-minded in his rage that even Killua is freaked out by what he sees.

Both Gon and Killua are prodigies, but all that means is relative to people their age and other beginners in Nen, they are way ahead of the game and take to learning it extremely easy. Against actual masters, people at Hisoka's level or above, they can do almost nothing. The arc we're going into now is when Gon and Killua first go in over their heads against enemies that are WAY stronger than they are, but in the Chimera Ant arc the enemies are so powerful that even most Nen masters are no match against the Ants.

This basically sums it up. Wing was a massive success for a franchise launch in the US, but the popularity began to taper off quicker than you would expect. G and 08th MS Team held their own, but not as much as Wing. Of course then they shot themselves in the both feet by airing the original MSG series (hell they might as well have blown off their legs with a shotgun) which looked extremely dated (which is what happens with most shows from the 70's)

No Gundam series is going to undo that damage permanently. Sure, it'll probably get some new fans but nothing near the potential they squandered.

It could have stuck around with fans like DBZ, but in the end they extinguished their own flame. It's far too late to carve out that place in a bunch of kids memories.
