I'm noticing a big difference between pre-90s and post-90s Marvel comics, and figure it hinges on "change". Marvel prided itself on dynamic change since the start, which forced writers to be creative. Once the market exploded and characters became brands, that all stopped dead. A lot of 80s writers have bitched extensively about the shift.
So thought experiment time, /co/. Let's say time had kept moving. Characters learned and stay learned, retired and stayed retired, died and stayed dead. New Mutants become the X-Men, New Warriors the Avengers, Power Pack the FF etc.. Pitches that revert development or glorify nostalgia are so antithetical they don't even get approved. What happens? How favorably would it compare? Would you personally go for it?

I don't like it because we would still have a ton of legacy characters replacing old characters who die or get too old. I like the sliding timescale which effectively makes heroes immortal like gods.

P.S. Surprise! It's not a Carol thread!

Although, ironically enough, she IS one of the biggest examples of post-90s character development in Marvel. Not quite sure what to make of that.

It's people like you that were responsible for One More Day.

>and figure it hinges on "change"

You're not wrong. People will point to Stan Lee bringing up how there should be "the illusion of change", but the truth is books got stagnant fast when they just basically spun their wheels. It's just as bad when they overdo change for the sake of shock value or attention.

My fave cape is immortal anyway. That's not a problem for me personally. If anything it makes it harder to take the mortal heroes seriously, by comparison.
And legacy characters wouldn't be mandatory. The original New Warriors lineup prided itself on all being original concepts.

Ironically enough II: Stan only coined the illusion of change after 1968. Before that change went ahead full force, almost in real-time. Culminating in the ultimate example of dynamic realistic change; the birth of Franklin Richards.

They would release new "What If"-style books, like "what if Peter Parker became Spiderman in the 90s?", which would then explode in popularity and overshadow the main line of books if their success is follows up upon.

Hm, that's actually something I'd like to see. An immortal/long lived character like Thor remaining a constant in an ever-changing Avengers team. Would be great to see how it affects them

I know right?
All I get are the snippets from What Ifs and glimpses of futures that'll never arrive.

Iron Man probably would have become an AI a lot faster and the pilot would be a bastard child of him. Spider Girl may have become mainstream with a kid of her own by now. Oddly enough, Doom would still be Doom though.

This is unironically one of the worst comics I've ever read.

Try some Marguerite Bennett sometime, it'll help you recontextualize.

It started as early as the '60s when Kirby wanted to kill off the Asgardians and replace them with the New Gods (which is the opening of the actual New Gods comic). Also after Ditko left Spider-Man, his development became slower and he was kind of frozen in one status quo for a long time.

I think these characters have lasted so much longer than anybody thought they would that the "illusion of change/snap back/change/snap back" method is the only way.

>kill off an entire beloved cast just to springboard a new idea
That's the opposite extreme. Sounds like the editor-driven stagnation we see today is a cumulative overreaction to that creator-driven chaos.
Goddammit I just want some middle ground!
