Like Supergirl kind of makes sense because the story is similar in set up to the TV show with her working with the DEO and having the adopted parents, but Superman comics aren't going to be like the movies with his normal adventures so he shouldn't look like the movie version. With Batman there's not as much need because the main body of his costume is generally a neutral tone. Superman's blue is bright enough that it becomes an eyesore if you don't have something there. But I don't think it absolutely has to be trunks, a stylized or thick belt works too (see also: Flash, Captain Marvel). Reborn suit is fine to me, but I wasn't as much of a fan with the Superbro or Superdad attempts since their belts were too skinny and didn't do enough.
