That's the 'twist' I've been advocating for for weeks? months? whatever. That "Sir" isn't actually a beast in human clothing. He's overbearing, a little prejudiced (as would be expected from someone in his age group), physically intimidating, occasionally loud and abrasive, but not evil like Amber's Dad or crazy like Becky's Dad. He's just trying to look after his grandkids the best he can and since he's got a lot of old-time opinions and views, he's standoffish, sees 'help' as pushing them to make something of themselves and does what he can with his position, but is still in the headspace that men showing emotions is simply not done, even to family. It's Ruth that has turned him into her own personal monster, when the worst he's done is be distant and make some off-colour comments. But at the end of the day, he'd be supportive of her.

That would be an interesting swerve and I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm still 85% certain this is going to turn into Evil Patriarch 3: Plantation Owner Edition. (Yes, I know he's from Canada but his outfit makes him look like a southern gentleman... which automatically makes him evil, y'know).

I think he's counting on the familiarity to add enjoyment value to his strip.

I feel like any callback or reference in anything garners a positive response by default. You feel like you're in on something big, you get a spike of familiarity. And even if it's obscure, you can feel good for finding the reference.

But, I think there should be something beyond just "getting it." And I don't think most Willis references, callbacks and character returns do that. This is a pretty nebulous idea, but as someone who gets most of the DoA references to older DoA strips, my reaction is rarely positive. I think in the cases of the Billie-Mary punch (which I think is a Roomies callback) and Walky's hair floof, the reference doesn't add much to the strip other than the satisfaction of remembering it.

Yeah, also why weren't there a ton of check-ins with Ruth and Chloe to to cover how she was dealing with all those high-profile students? Ruth was literally putting off meetings and shirking all her responsibilities. So even if Ruth hadn't spent the day sleeping in, there wasn't nearly enough oversight by Chloe to make sure these students needs were being met.
