Useful pic attached for the comicfags.

I don't have digital copies to share, but these are the must-have books on my shelf:

>Richard Williams - The Animator's Survival Kit
Even if you're not intending to make animations, there's so much stuff about body language that it will help you pick the most expressive moments for your comic panels and pin-ups.
>Jason Cheeseman-Meyer - Vanishing Point
Perspective book that deals specifically with using the techniques in comics (i.e. more than just "here's how to draw a building exterior/interior", but rather "here's how to place your characters within a 3D environment").
>Stan Lee & John Buscema - How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way
An obvious classic. Each chapter is pretty short but packs a lot of useful information.

Maybe not as essential but still very good is >Dave Gibbons - Watching the Watchmen
It's the entire comic, but with the initial draft layouts, sketches, environment/character designs etc. I like it both as something to study, and also as a motivational tool - it's nice to be reminded that even the most iconic art starts out as mere blotches. That's kinda why those three books I mentioned aren't so much about drawing single body parts with photo-realistic accuracy, but rather about gestures and composition.

Off forshortening, proportions, and anatomy, basically trying to stress if you're going to complete an illustration with a character you should construct it so your anatomy isn't off (even the best artist will flub up here and there if they skip steps).

>>90742736

None of the ones so far stress any terrible art concepts or misdirection. Generally everyone in an art field that takes it serious is learning and changing so it's to be expected there's inaccuracy applicable to most information, even with Loomis, Bridgman, etc there's an aim you have to take with any information received.

No image, just a trick to keep in mind: flip your canvas every now and then.
Clip Studio Paint has a shortcut to do this without actually modifying the image itself (like how you can rotate your view), not sure if Photoshop can also do this or if you'd need to actually flip the layers (or perhaps do a printscreen/export a merged copy and flip that).
Point is, you'd be surprised at how asymmetrical and potentially broken your stuff can be, even if you think you initially mapped it out well. It's the kind of thing that you really need to be keeping an eye out for early on to save yourself the ballache of being half way through coloring before realizing your supermodel looks like Quasimodo.

>>
>>90744043
I agree, but i think I'm starting to get the hang of it. This pic is basically right. The most important part is to understand that the palm has most of the mass and needs to be drawn first. From there you can do the thumb, and then outline a general block of space for the fingers to occupy. at that point its just detailing each digit.

What exactly is your point? that some sketched redline has bad line quality? How autistic do you have to be to make this?
>>
>>90761443
the sketch is an examination of what's wrong with the image on the left.
>>
>>90761443
>What exactly is your point?

That if we look at the redline without the original image under it, we see far more flaws in the redline.

Doesn't matter what the qualifications of the redliner are. Doesn't matter how quickly he claims to have made it, which I doubt given how feathered his lines are. It's garbage and useless.
>>
>>90742394
Applying a soft shade to crisp, detailed line-work will always look off to me. Textured almost pulls it off, but it still seems like the awkward bastard child of two good, but not-necessarily-compatible styles.
>>
>>90742736
The problem is that when someone gets really good at anything, they forget what it was like when you really don't know shit and it's the first time ever picking up the tools. Their skills are so high the basics now come as naturally as breathing to them, and they have a hard time teaching because they sort of can't fathom someone not understanding basic anatomy for example.

I've had some teachers like that - they're undisputedly great at the field they're supposed to teach, but they're utter shit at teaching precisely because they're too advanced and can't quite understand the level total noobs are at, and so it's all way too advanced and ends up depressing the students instead of teaching them anything.

However, the people who are only slightly advanced still remember what it's like when you can't do shit, remember how they learned to do stuff, and are able to give better instruction in taking those first steps.

That's not how it went down kiddo, I went to community college to learn animation. Dissatisfied with the trend of moving towards a flash, tweening, and 3D focused industry I made it a point to take only traditional courses as much as possible and turn in all my projects without using Flash at all mostly just hand drawn cels compiled using Monkey Jam software. I tried to be the bad boy of the animation scene but if there's anything I learned it's that nobody likes a John K.

People here have a bias that if a redline is not a finished drawing in quality, it's shit. It's NOT for you to just trace the final project and claim it's yours, the redliner is just suppose to give you the ideas, you do the rest.

How can I bring skill to my incompetent hands?
Is it just a matter of grinding, just drawing over and over and over until I get it right?

how about no

Study expressions by people-watching.

If you copy pic related you'll always make lifeless, stiff, fake-looking expressions.

They also look really creepy. Like, REALLY fucking creepy.

>2008
Dude, I hate to break it to you, but that was 10 years ago. In that time you could've taught yourself flash from scratch, became mildly proficient at it, taken a holiday to a shitty beach to get drunk and think of an idea, come back, design the idea, pitch it, get rejected, and have learned a whole lot more of the creative process as a result.
>>
>>90770246
Not enough Loomis.
>>
>>90771566
>Loomis.
I'm trying it
>>
Say I wanted to animate, and as shortcut I just decided I'll draw all the faces out first, then copy-paste them to the body that I'll be doing frame-by-frame or however in the shot. How do I decide what faces to make? Act out the whole spectrum of the characters emotions in a mirror? Is there like a photo like >>90764336 that'd give me a ballpark estimate of the top 100 most used facial expressions?
>>
>>90770594

Nope, because proportions are fluid. What that redline did is nitpick minor things while introducing major errors, in particular to the raised arm by introducing more depth to the perspective without correctly enlarging the hand, and the asinine comment about the center line of the torso being off, when she's wearing clothes that have thickness and is pulled tight across the chest, not sticking to the skin.

Shit artist don't notice these things, fixate on a single body model they learned without being to apply variation, and pass shit information along. This would merely be embarrassing if I didn't see entire boards being misled by crap like this.

Speaking of drawing, is there a program which can help with paneling comics? My reason for asking is that I am trying to write a comic script and need some assistance with visualing the pages.

value and shading are the same. artist really need to take actual light science class instead of that religious feelings crap where they rename everything wrong
