No thanks.

If it's mostly afterlife stuff, it'll be better than Book of Life. Seriously, there was barely any Land of the Dead in that. Just painful animal rights and girl power crap.

Book of Life was so disappointing. i had such high hopes for that, but it was one of the most boring animated films I've ever had the displeasure of sitting through.

This was a commentary and criticism about bullfighting in Mexico which until recently was legal.

I think that movie had a lot of stuff that was relevant to Mexican culture (the need to please your family, tradition being important over everything, the rampant machismo, pop culture, etc..) but just went over the head of non-Mexican audience but yeah the story could have been better.

That said I don't think CoCo will be better since the premise is pretty stupid (the kid's family hates music, the kid wants to play music durrhurrhurr) and this looks pretty but kind of meh (Book of Life had interesting designs as well)

Also what is with the Gringo obsession with Dia de Muertos? It's so fucking weird it's like Japan suddenly obsessing over Thanksgiving and doing Thanksgiving related shit but incorrectly and outside of the actual days.
>>
The road to Oscars goes through Disney or Pixar. Your winner for 2017 because Hollywood hates Trump.
>>
>>90738153
I can't wait for the dumbass article that will say this is Pixar's response to Trump even though it's been in production years before he even started running.

So it's Book of Life and Rock Dog combined?
>>
>>90737457
>Will it have an overarching theme of family?
Yes because it's the only thing they can write and it will have glossed over kid friendly Dia de Muertos shit to make it more kid friendly and a lot of elements similar to Book of Life.

That said this is probably my favorite animation regarding Dia de Muertos and it's less about the holiday and more about life and death itself (and obviously not for kids since there's naked skeletons and boners)

I thought Book of Life was shit, but even I'm pissed that they're clearly capitalizing on Jorge R. Gutierrez's original pitch.
>>
>>90738315
I liked the whole thing with the worms, the guy won't accept his death and panics about the worm eating him until the very end when he accepts that he's dead and decides to eat the worm by drinking the mezcal that Death gives him letting it eat him from inside while we also see the kid playing with a worm in the graveyard and ultimately killing it. We take a worm's life for granted, it means nothing but they are also eating is away when we die.

I also like that we get to see this from the dead person's PoV.

The love interest is the first time I've seen the "Strong independent womyn" character actually laugh at and semi-enjoy the company of the big, boorish, egotistical man. Even when she reveals she's a super fighter because she trained at private school, it barely comes into use and she doesn't even get a solo action scene like would have been very typical of a movie with that character.

My Mexican friend loved Book of Life. He knew nothing about it but was instantly hooked when he heard Ron Perlman talking because he loves Hellboy and didn't know he was in the movie. He even enjoyed the pop culture songs because he said most of his younger members of his family who still live in Mexico love the shit out of American songs and that's part of how his mother learned to speak English when she was younger, so it didn't feel like it stuck out like most people said, it felt like it was written by a guy who actually grew up in Mexico.

That's not what Pixar do. They play off of memories and nostalgia.

It will be a montage of most likely his father/grandfather playing the guitar at key moments of their lives.

>sees someone play the guitar at a concert wide eyed.
>gets a guitar with his pocket money
>plays poorly in the living room with his parents
>parents get angry at him and tell him to go to his room
>he throws the guitar in the corner and angrily lies on his bed.
>door opens
>it's the father's own father
>he shows him some simple notes
>kid smiles when he gets some notes correct
>more scenes go by, showing him getting better and the grandfather eventually stops helping and just sits there smiling.
>scene of him seeing his crush, he plays the guitar to her, she blushes
>wedding scene, he plays to her as she walks up the aisle
>baby is born
>baby won't stop crying, he plays to him and he stops
>Grandfather is on his death bed looking sad and weak
>he plays the guitar one last time to him, he dies smiling
>sad he puts the guitar in a dark closet
>child, now older sneaks the guitar out and tries playing
>father spots this, gets angry for a second then smiles, shows him some notes like his father did

The person that really mattered and who has modern values and is more of an audience stand-in was critical.

Another boring Diversity Disney movie. Gigantic thankfully isn't about Diversity.....but it's also about Gynocentrism.
>>
>>90741054
It's not that White Males aren't present but how they are portrayed. They're always idiotic butt monkeys who are emasculated and good for nothing really. That's how Disney portrays white males in recent years.

White Twats? Oh they're always competent and sharp witted and cunning and strong and etc. Fuck Disney. I don't expect Gigantic to be anything more than more of this same bullshit routine. Jack will be too dumb to live or just a butt monkey and the giantess girl will be the doer and clever one.
>>
>>90746663
Goddamit. It's been more than 5 years and I still laugh whenever I'm caught off guard by it.
>>
>>90741054

>you are now noticing that Disney Princesses are almost perfect with character flaws that are actually aren't really negatives (being headstrong, naive, innocent, frightened etc.)
>you are now realising that the male characters can are selfish, criminals, con artists, anti-social, smelly

Has there been a positive male character in a Disney film this decade?
>>
>>90744560
Sadly this movie will not be in Kingdom Hearts 3 as a world. And it's the only one with the adventure vibe that would make it satisfying.
>>
>>90747092

Gigantic at least seems to have a 'good' male protagonist this time judging by what they've said so far and the character designs.

It's hard to see it not eventually going perfect girls, bad men though.

Little boys don't spend a fortune buying Disney Prince outfits.
>>
>>90747253

Kingdom Hearts 3 will probably be out by Summer 2018, even if it's only in Japan so Gigantic has no chance.
>>

>>
Ugh please tell me that early-90s/late-80s trend of putting grand orchestral arrangements over everything isn't coming back. That shit ruined an entire generation of soundtracks.
>>
>>90746638
But why a sequel? It was a compact story and the odd couple protagonists went back to their respective games, not even inviting a "where are they now?" kind of appeal.

One, it's nice to see Pixar do something that isn't a rehash and/or "What if these unconscious things had feelings?" like 99% of their projects. Another plus is that it actually takes place in a real cultural setting--actual culture can be just as nice as completely imagined worlds.

Second, I subjectively like it because it resonates with my own history--my grandpa was a musician and my father is a doctor.

But it is, it's "What if Mexicans had feelings?".
>>
>>90749446
Actual culture:
>Celtic Mythology (Song of the Sea)
>Mexican Customs (Book of Life/Coco)
>French History and Literature (Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Not actual culture:
>Made up fantasy world (Dragon Ball Z)
>Made up sci-fi world (Star Wars/Trek)
>"Dude, what if toys had feelings?"

The lines are admittedly a little gray though, things like Tolkien are fantasy worlds more or less inspired by Anglo-Celtic myths)

Such a boring looking character. Where's the imagination in design? The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up all had humans that look like they were designed as a drawing first and then translated into and integrated basic shapes into the anatomy. This just looks like some generic background character you'd see in a Disney 3D movie which surprised me when it said Pixar. You can see it first showing up in InsideOut with the human characters looking more grounded in design.

The bull is a symbol of being an alpha male which the Mexican people revere. It is why they do bullfighting because they want to be as manly as the bull. If you want to make a film just make one about being a man and mexicans go apeshit over it.

Which leads to...

The only thing he was cynical about was criticizing Hopps for her optimism in being a good cop. But even then, you can justify that he was not being cynical about Zootopia but hostile towards Hopps because he admits he immediately noticed her "Fox Away Spray" when they first met and that's why he spoke to her in a patronizing tone for awhile. He was snarky and sarcastic more than cynical.
>>
>>90758161
'meber the original version where they both were cynical?

Nick cuz he was stuck with a device that prevented him from experiencing emotions, and Hopps because she was raised in a fuckhuge family where she was losing own her identity even her own father kept forgetting her name.

Maybe a movie about the Golden Age of Mexican cinema? It could be the story about a girl who wants to be an actress/singer.

I have no knowledge on Mexican history. Has there ever been a point where stingy adults started to ban music during an era because it was corrupting youth? It definitely happened in America in very small towns during the rise of rock and roll. That's where the whole "BAN DANCING! BAN MUSIC!" tropes come from with our stories. I want to think that Mexico, whose youth absolutely love American music, caught on to the rock n roll craze at the same time and would've absolutely had the same impact. I wanna say elders had way more of an impact in Mexico than America.

>i have no hopes for Zootopia 2 after seeing how original was made.

Zootopia stands out because they were just having trouble finding the right way to do the story, that shit happens in the creative field. You work on something, it gets stuck in a rut, you get a few people from outside to take another look at it from a different point of view and they make recommendations, I don't see how that reflects poorly on the movie.

The original premise was interesting sure but it wouldn't appeal to a broader audience and wouldn't have worked out as well. They adjusted it and the movie turned out great

I realize it's probably SUPPOSED to be cheesy, but that "theme from a war-torn couple being reunited in front of Dinosaurs breaching the horizon of a sunrise" that plays at the end just seems so out of place. Bullfuckingshit.
TTGL and Big O are super obscure. In the mind of your average Mexican under 30, the big four are DBZ, Ranma, Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon because those were played over and over in national TV throughout the 90s and early 00s.
Then the closest ones in terms of popularity are Mazinger, Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, Candy Candy, Remy, Arale and maybe Naruto.
Anything beyond that is lesser known.

Really, even a grandma might recognize Goku and Pikachu, while a 40-something might be familiar with Macross, Ultraman and Mazinger.
Kids might know Naruto and One Piece, but stuff like Jojo, TTGL, KLK or anything that wasn't played in canal 5 or 7 are unknown.

>>
>>90769981

I guess if you count the isolated indigenous tribes as 'lots', but how could an average Mexican don't know who Benito Juarez is, when he is the most worshipped historical figure in the SEP books? The man is revered by for separating the state and church and being the first and only indigenous president.

I accept people not knowing Carranza, Morelos (because Hidalgo is more popular) Iturbide, Sor Juana or Huerta; but Juarez is one of the must know figures in Mexican history along Santa Ana, Porfirio, Madero and Zapata. Like someone ignorant may not know exactly what they did, but they know the name and they were part of our history.
