This was a commentary and criticism about bullfighting in Mexico which until recently was legal.

I think that movie had a lot of stuff that was relevant to Mexican culture (the need to please your family, tradition being important over everything, the rampant machismo, pop culture, etc..) but just went over the head of non-Mexican audience but yeah the story could have been better.

That said I don't think CoCo will be better since the premise is pretty stupid (the kid's family hates music, the kid wants to play music durrhurrhurr) and this looks pretty but kind of meh (Book of Life had interesting designs as well)

Also what is with the Gringo obsession with Dia de Muertos? It's so fucking weird it's like Japan suddenly obsessing over Thanksgiving and doing Thanksgiving related shit but incorrectly and outside of the actual days.

Yes because it's the only thing they can write and it will have glossed over kid friendly Dia de Muertos shit to make it more kid friendly and a lot of elements similar to Book of Life.

I liked the whole thing with the worms, the guy won't accept his death and panics about the worm eating him until the very end when he accepts that he's dead and decides to eat the worm by drinking the mezcal that Death gives him letting it eat him from inside while we also see the kid playing with a worm in the graveyard and ultimately killing it. We take a worm's life for granted, it means nothing but they are also eating is away when we die.

My Mexican friend loved Book of Life. He knew nothing about it but was instantly hooked when he heard Ron Perlman talking because he loves Hellboy and didn't know he was in the movie. He even enjoyed the pop culture songs because he said most of his younger members of his family who still live in Mexico love the shit out of American songs and that's part of how his mother learned to speak English when she was younger, so it didn't feel like it stuck out like most people said, it felt like it was written by a guy who actually grew up in Mexico.

Such a boring looking character. Where's the imagination in design? The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up all had humans that look like they were designed as a drawing first and then translated into and integrated basic shapes into the anatomy. This just looks like some generic background character you'd see in a Disney 3D movie which surprised me when it said Pixar. You can see it first showing up in InsideOut with the human characters looking more grounded in design.
