Bane is Batman's dark mirror. He's as smart as Bruce is, but he focuses (usually, there are exceptions) on more direct assaults, just as Bruce might 'tend' to outsmart his opponents, but he'll wade through them en mass from time to time, too.

People keep forgetting that Bane is just as smart as Bruce. He'll strike from ambush with as much genius for tactical approach and strategy as Bruce has, so Dick, Jason, and Damian have no advantage in avoiding said ambushes, or being able to avoid fighting Bane, either.

As for his villains? Yes, it's meant to establish that Bane is a nearly unstoppable force, exceeding human limits (just like all those times criminals have made some comment like 'no human can hold their breath for more than x minutes, Batman's dead by now', only for him to surface from behind them and take them out, etc), and, more directly, it's an intentional mirroring of Knightfall, where Bane busted open Arkham and freed all of Batman's foes so that he'd tire himself capturing and fighting them all, "running the gauntlet", only to suddenly find Bane in the mansion ready to break him. Here, Bane has to break INTO Arkham and run the same gauntlet to reach Bruce, who's waiting for him.

Since the New 52, Tomasi restarted Damian and has given him depth and nuance and taken him beyond being a mini-Bruce to being a kid with his own fully fledged character. New 52 BaR was really the 1st time someone took the time to explore and develop the relationship between Bruce & Damian. Morrison was so focused on Bruce for Inc that he wrote Damian the same, & even gave him to Jason as his sidekick for a time. Tomasi used BaR to explore the unexplored relationship between Batman & Robin. I don't see anything wrong w/ that. I could have sworn Tomasi said something about imparting a lot of his own experience as a father which is why his focus seems to be on writing father/son relationships whether that be between Bruce & Damian or Clark & Jon. Now accusing him of downplaying Dick almost comes off like he is doing damage to their relationship, but all Tomasi may have ever done is omit Dick, but that doesn't downplay him. I see a lot of anons in this thread who argue that Dick is Damian's father, but I've always thought that Dick was more Damian's big brother who Damian grew up w/, looked up to, and grew to love having around more so than their stupid middle brothers Jason and Tim. I understand the argument of Dick being paternal in the absence of Bruce following FC, but I saw that more like the big brother becoming the man of the house after a father's death. He doesn't become the father of the family. He just becomes the alpha who has to take on a lot of the father's responsibilities. One of the things that I think makes D&D's relationship more fraternal than paternal is that they can commiserate w/ 1 another about Bruce in a way father and son couldn't. I think the issue is that logically "Dick is the adoptive father who did the leg work and Bruce is just the birth dad coming into the kid's life after he was properly loved" isn't satisfying from a Bruce perspective but it's probably what would make the most sense for Damian to actually feel. But Bruce is the main character of the franchise and it was at the beginning of a "reboot" so what works for him and what new readers would likely expect (as they don't have the context of the Dickbats run) is what was used. And of course Tomasi likely can relate more to that sort of father-son relationship than he can an inherently broken one.

Because it's not really anything special. It's a good issue with some great characterization, but Seeley is really fumbling on a lot of the delivery here. The dialogue and narration basically hit the reader over the head with the character's feelings and motivations, when it would be a lot better to let the reader infer some of it for themselves. Some people in another thread a few days ago were talking about Seeley dumbing down his writing with the change from Grayson to Nightwing, and that's pretty apparent here. The one thing keeping this from being a fantastic issue, but it's a pretty big flaw.

I think that after the New52 made it that Tim, Dick and Jason were never adopted nor really had that paternal influence due to the condensed timeline alongside the focus of Damian being The Son of Batman while the other three were distanced from Bruce as a father figure and so on and so on, have really made people feel like DC is dismissive of adoptive families. Especially when by 2011 Bruce was referring to the boys as his sons [plural] even if Dick and maybe Jason didn’t feel the same way, then the reboot happens and now Bruce only refers to Damian as his son, and the status of the others when it comes to who is or isn’t adopted and when this all happened is really unclear.

Damian is Bruce's real / biological son and by current canon his only child since the adoptions are no longer canon.
