I just don't see a point to continue it. She was a racer by circumstance and only to try to bring her mother back and restore her family. What high-stakes racing could there be left? The oban star races happen every 10,000 years so not that, and Jordan is the avatar so there wouldn't be any crog or alien threat to earth. Normal races on earth would just be mundane compared to the oban star races.

Also, it was announced there would be a potential Spin-off/sequel. Not a literal "Oban Star Racers 2". I can't believe the new designs' new Mass Effect-esque esthetic is an accident.

What's so good about the series? As I said the whole thing revolving around racing makes me raise an eyebrow, but I wonder if it's all least well used or explained and if there's more to it than that.

My childhood was filled with those world-crisis solved by sports/toys on TV. Beyblade, Yu-gi-oh are the more obvious ones but when i was given stupid shit like anime and series where fucking MOUNTAINBIKES are the most important shit in the world or another where an entire world and its fate lies in people racing with RC Cars (I don't remember their names) I kind of grew to dislike the idea.

then again, i noticed these are more fantastical races and a bit more harsher looking so maybe I just have a bias.

It's less "win the race and save the world" and more "Wacky Races in space but you eventually learn the thing they race for changes the tone".
I mean the beginning did have them join the race to try and prevent war but the grand prize was not even brought up to the Earth crew until the sixth episode.
At it's core the story is about Eva trying to get her family back and she ends up joining a space race to get it.

Beatiful scenarios, neat designs for the aliens and the ships, likeable characters, the races are pretty creative and it's not too long( 26 episodes).The races being the medium to save the universe make sense once you watch it, but the focus of the show is more on the characters

Well I think the major difference is Ōban wasn't made to sell toys. The races themselves are the basics plots each episode is built around (and the tournament the series) but the competition aspect certainly isn't the be-all and end-all of the story, which is much wider than that. The interesting characters and universe of Ōban is really what makes the show, and with them all competing essentially to receive their greatest desire (several of which are noble) it's fairly easy to find yourself becoming sympathetic towards them. They made the universe feel big and varied as well, which is always a bonus in stories which take place on a galactic level.

Season's plot:

A noseless boy falls in love with a noseless girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. I doubt it, Earth was losing the previous war with them before the Avatar stepped in and made them stop for the race of Oban. The only reason Molly even participated in the last race was to prevent Kross from becoming the Avatar, where he would have absolute control over the galaxy

Which is why I don't think a sequel with Crogs as the enemies makes sense because the new Avatar is a human who hates them

Add the fact that the humans send an exploration party to a Crog world, and that the Avatar robbed them of a rightful and easy victory. They just want to punish the humans.

It was stated that Sul was just as powerful as the avatar, and you had O who was arguable similarly powerful.

I can see a sequel really toning down on the avatar's powers - we don't even see a massive-awesome explanation of the avatar's strength in
the original series.

All we know is that psycho Canaletto destroyed some planets but we don't know if that was because he was avatar or because he was some insane cuthulu-Tzeentch monstrosity.

So ideally Jordan brings the team together because he needs some assistance with some inter-spacial issue.

I don't really think its a bad idea, especially considering the creativity and depth of the Oban universe that we haven't explored yet.

Also think of the cool ships and fights with 2017 tech.

Just recently finished the series and I gotta say that it was a pretty fun entertaining ride. While I know that Hal Filmmakers is no longer in business, I do hope that the animation would be handled by a proper anime studio if they decide to go 2D with some 3D animation for the mechs/ships.

Here's hoping for another catchy opening as well.
