Sadly, it was killed by generic dull plot and low quality CGI.

CGI scenery was mostly good, but a lot of characters were just too ugly. White Tron design sucked. Derez effects were no match for the ones used in movie. Combined with inconsistent pacing of action scenes and questionable use of slo-mo, it alone was enough to put the show on the brink of being unwatchable.

Plot was good at the moments and had some interesting twists, but most of the time it just felt like YA. Not even a good kind of YA. And "thou shall not kill", in a dark virtual world of Tron? Seriously Disney? They had a movie already, and it had no problems with showing the Grid in all of its cruel beauty. Why restrict main characters to fistfights now?

Never by main characters. And the fact that the bad guys never had any problem with it made it feel even more forced.

Compare and contrast Legacy, where most of the fights resulted in piles of pixels, and none of the good guys (including Tron himself) had any problems with it.

We see Tron derezz a bunch of fools in the first episode, and I know he did it a few other times too. It never bothered me that most of the cast didn't like to kill because they weren't originally security programs. That was CLU's whole plan with the repurposing, to turn good programs into killers. That's what they were fighting against.

I have a feeling that S2 would have gotten a lot more violent, which may be why Disney wasn't excited about it.

Tron 3 wasn't actually dead until 2015. They were on track to start production then.

But Disney had both Marvel and Star Wars at that point, and when Tomorrowland failed, and failed hard, they took Tron off the roster.

No use in wasting resources when they had two juggernauts.
I'm not adverse to a reboot, I just want the proper, real, Tron 3.
Then they can make whatever movies they want after that.

Legacy really only serves the purpose of setting up Tron 3, and that Tron 3 won't happen. The only one who was still pulling for it was Kosinski...he even said so in an interview just days before the Reboot was stated as being in consideration.

And Kosinski doesn't have the weight to try and buck back.

I'd say "plot", but it never stopped Marvel from getting a huge box office. Having cool graphics and action scenes is enough. So it's not that.

I think it was a combination of unfortunate release date, the franchise being relatively unknown and Disney live action movies having a track record of being "meh" at best.

I think this is one of the reasons why they want a reboot. Legacy used a lot of things that were set up in old Tron, and original Tron didn't aged well and never became classic. They want to start from scratch to be in control from the very start.

I only got around to seeing the first episode while it was on Netflix, I feel bad for missing my chance.

That was a little more than a PoC considering it was just 12 months apart from the real series airing. Before Disney bought and publicized Star Wars. It's a weird and destructive practice by Disney. They fund an idea, but then actively sabotage it instead of just cancelling the series from production before it reaches the screens.

I wish we had gotten at least 5 or even 30 minutes worth of animation with that style. Just to see how true 2D-3D really functions when properly budgeted. Even stuff like Poet Anderson and Paperman don't look all that original and true "2D/3D" compared to what Uprising had going there for a few seconds. Tangled/Lion Pride also look too flat despite being 3D.

What we ended up with was an expensive show to make.
This trailer looks like it already cost about as much as an episode of that.
And while the trailer has a lot of advantages in terms of frames and visual effects, I will say that I prefer the character designs we ended up with. Weird as they were, I just really grew to love them.

Let's not forget it's on an exclusive paid channel - the main reason why Motorcitiy, Penn Zero, Randy Cunningham and any other exclusive Disney-owned cartoon keep failing.
They really think someone is going to pay for 1 channel just to watch Tangled and Lion Guard or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Seems like Disney loves putting millions of dollars on a paper airplane and then launching it away with no hope of it flying or making back the money.

I'm not liking how incompetent and jewish Disney have become after buying Marvel and DC, it reminds me of another horribly incompetent company which isn't even good at the 1 thing it's suppose to be doing - it's Hasbro.

CLU which was just a side character that appeared in Tron 1 for five minutes, who was sent by Flynn to hack into the master computer so he can retrieve back the source code Encom stole from Flynn. He was piloting a tank and he gets easily defeated by the anti virus.
Might as well call it a reboot rather than a continuation.

I know a lot of fans of the original movie complained when Legacy and beyond had the more modern, "shiny" look, but I think I almost prefer it. The Legacy-era atmosphere with constant fog/rain and generally dimmer lighting nails that sort of "oppressive cyberpunk dystopia" balanced with "in a computer" feeling that the original movie/2.0 tried to hit, but ultimately fell too far in the latter direction.

All those establishing shots of cityscapes in Uprising are a great example. It looks like a futuristic city, but then you get weird/fantastical elements like >>90729428 that look like computer parts.

I think shoving Jared Leto in would be a bad idea, and that's not based only on "tattoo Joker."
At least there's lots of room for new innovations and idea when the city gets moved (or copied?) to a new and modern computer. Did Sam copy the old files, the garbage files, a way to copy the deleted name-removed files? Dropping in Tron 1 characters and mecha to try to survive whatever happened at the end of Tron 2 sounds like a good idea.

It was more that Tron was one of their only franchises for boys and young men, a group they've always struggled with. When they bought Lucasfilm and Marvel, they pretty much secured the entire demographic overnight. They didn't need to pour as much money into Tron because they didn't need it as badly anymore.

Ah. Star Wars and Marvel have been enjoyable under Disney for the most part, It just seems a little too safe. Of course it's a smart choice financially, but in terms of programs that aren't specifically targeted for girls, Disney has been kind of been unimaginative. Gravity falls was a good show, but they dropped that fairly quick, and now as they're kind of riding on the coat tails of Starwars: the Clone Wars with Rebels.

I'm thankful for those threads, they got me curious about the show. I had never seen Tron movies before that and didn't know anything about the franchise, but I decided to give the show a chance because of the threads on /co/.

I'm not sure if there's something more recent but when it comes to Uprising, there were a few issues. I think the show's new episodes aired somewhere close to midnight? Also, the show has region restrictions on Amazon and iTunes, and there's no DVD/Bluray release. If you happen to live in the wrong country, there's no way to buy the episodes.

Can't help but feel like sometimes shows are set up to fail. Which is upsetting and weird with Uprising's case; they bothered to put so much money and work into getting VAs with big names and that unique visual look, but they didn't bother to encourage people to actually watch/buy the show.

One thing I wanted to see more of were the bits of the old ENCOM grid, like well, the bits as well as the remains of Sark's ship which can be seen in one of the side games. What if all those old security programs, the doofy generation 1 guards with their mitten gauntlets and the ICPs still existed in a corner of the Grid, unnoticed due to taking virtual zero space compared to modern programs and led by a kernal who hasn't had a real job since the servers were disconnected from ENCOM? Maybe just a nod to Tron 2.0 as another group who could be rallied into the resistance, complete with old grid equipment like gen 1 recognizers and light tanks.

Oh yeah, I was here at the time. Uprising kept getting its day switched, its timeslot switched, all without warning. They seriously wanted it to die.

I had hoped it would gain a larger following on Netflix, but it's not even there any more. Least there are HD uploads out there.

I think it helps that the newer look has more varied environments than the original's "boxes and hard edges on grids." In Uprising, we got a ton of different locations that all looked distinct while still looking "Tron."
