>>
>>90714686
Nice. I figured it out thanks to the name Crusher and those old house style caption bubbles but it's still a solid story.

Yeah he's got a very distinct way of writing somewhat 'grimy' (for lack of a better term) dialogue. I think that he's a better than Wheddon or Bendis when it comes to giving characters unique voices though.
>>90714899
Not so much of a twist as a change of perspective but: You remember how Peter Parker wrestled to win a lot of money? Then the event organizer refused to pay him the full amount or whatever because he was kind of a sleazy douchebag? This story looks at the events leading up to the promotion and provides a bit more sympathy for both Crusher Hogan (Bonesaw in the Raimi movies) and his boss

Anon where did the movie get the idea?
this is b8 isn't it
>>
>>90714966
The series this issue was taken from went from 2001 to 2003. It's entirely possible that this issue actually saw print before the 2002 film.

(also, the wrestling match obviously didn't originate in the film).
>>
>>90715093
Looked it up. This specific issue was July 2002.
>>
>>90715046
I actually have next to zero knowledge about wrestling. I find myself with a lot more spare time these days and kind of want to watch old 'classic' WWE stuff but don't know where to start. Is there still a /wooo/ general on any boards?
>>
>>90715123
Wow that's actually pretty cool. The movie came out in May so it would have lined up almost perfectly if you became a new fan after seeing the movie.

>>90715093
>>90715090

>>
>>90715046
Yeah, "Shoot" generally refers to out of character interviews or an actual scuffle breaking out in the ring. Or a wrestler going off script to air their grievances in front of a live audiences.
>>
>>90714640
FUCK
>>
>>90715260

>yfw the Crusher Hogan issue isn't even the best issue of Tangled Web
>>
Crusher Hogan should be the new Scorpion or Venom.
>>
>>90715468
In additon to Severance Package,Tangled Web also had the one with Vulture + other people in a bar; The Thousand; and Flowers for Rhino. It was a really strong series.
>>
>>90715308
Out of character interviews? All the time, usually with old, retired wrestlers telling funny stories about themselves and their coworkers.

Less so with the other two. Usually it's the result of a serious fuck up by management, a clash of egos, or a serious misunderstanding or miscommunication. And when those happen, it's a hilarious shitstorm.
>>
>>90715147
/asp/ is technically the wrestletalk board but its probably one of the worst boards there are

>>90715212
>Anon where did the movie got the idea?

>>90715532
I genuinely do not understand /asp/.
Their whole "wrestling's too faggy seriously lol" philosophy begs the question of why they're even wasting time on a discussion board in the first place.
>>
>>90715614

>>
>>90715614
>>90715758

Actual fights in the ring are rare these days, because they are a good way to get blacklisted from companies. Wrestling is in a big way about trust, so if someone is being a jackass, nobody will want to work with them. A lot of the stories of rookies getting beat up is like the one in this comic where a kid is trying to act cool by not "selling" anything, so is ultimately "forced to sell something the hard way". The smart ones learn their lesson quick. There's still some obvious bad blood in the ring at times (Del Rio clearly puts a bit more into his kicks when his opponent is wearing a Sin Cara mask), but they still are usually able to keep it together to wrestle their match.

Some notable shoots:
> A lighter note to start with. The "Brawl for it All" tournament, an ill-advised shoot tournament used to try and get the talented Dr Death Steve Williams over immediately with the WWF crowd as a true badass. They don't count on the utterly forgettable Bart Gunn actually being tough as fuck...

> MMA Fighter Daniel Puder goes off script and puts Olympic Gold Medallist Kurt Angle in a choke hold live on television, inevitably causing his "tough guy popularity" to soar and winning the fan voted "Tough Enough" show he was in. His prize was to get a brief Royal Rumble cameo where he spent three minutes getting chopped across the chest by Guerrero, Benoit, and Holly before never being seen in WWE again.

> JBL bloodies Blue Meanie at One Night Stand.

> The "Mass Transit Incident", arguably New Jack's most notorious moment in a long list of stupidity.

> Out of nothing more than pure vile jealousy of someone younger and more talented, Japanese women's "wrestler" Yoshiko brutalises fan favourite Act Yasukawa in a "match" to the point that Act's injuries are so severe that she is forced to retire. Reminder to never support the Seadlinnng promotion as they are the only company retarded enough to continue to work with Yoshiko after what she did.
>>
>>90716819
Goddammit man... I'm still super heartbroken over Act.
>>
>>90716819
Antonio Inoki and Great Antonio is another shoot match where the fat no-sell gets what's coming to him
>>
>>90714640
Man. Now I feel bad for the guy. A really nice read.
>>
>>90715384
I'm reading about New Jack, but it's a bit difficult to understand some of the jargon.
Think I got the gist of the Mass Transit incident though. Basically, he almost killed a kid in the ring?
>>
>>90718064
Basically. I mean the kid shouldn't have lied his way into the ring in the first place so had no business being there, but Jack still took things way too far and caused a giant lawsuit because of it.

Also, what bits of jargon are you getting stuck on. I don't mind "translating" the terminology a bit.
>>
>>90719937
I think I've got a handle on it now. "Selling" someone's moves means behaving like they actually hurt I guess, and "putting someone over" means making the crowd root for them?
Also, I decided to dive right in to pro wrestling history. The fact that Triple H used to be called Hunter Hearst Helmsley the Connecticut Blueblood is fucking hilarious.
>>
>>90720018
Triple H's finishing move is even called "The Pedigree". He went from being a high society type, to a anti-establishment frat boy yelling "suck it", then became a barbarian king, and is now a corporate big wig.

That's a hell of a story.
>>
>>90720873
There was also that brief stint in WCW where he was Terra Rysen.

That... that part tends to get skipped over in his history pages.
>>
>>90715147
Kayfabe memories is a good site with and excellent forum. They deal mostly with the older territories and WWE up to the nineties. Also check out YouTube for older videos. Check out people like Bruno Sammartino,Bob Backlund,Pedro Morales who were champions. Also others like Ric Flair,Harley Race,Road Warriors and there is just too many. Give New Japan and ROH a try too.
>>
>>90714640
OH FUUUCK.
>>
>>90715528
Check out shoot with Jim Cornette but Gary Hart is my favorite. He was a wrestler who was better known as a manager who also worked behind the scenes nurturing talent. He sounds like your grandpa telling you stories but check out his promos and action ringside. Tough guy from Chiraq.
>>
>>90714640
> Thanks to Pete, Championship Wrestling inevitably went out of business thanks to their hottest gimmick and biggest star being made to look like a joke in a single night
> Long term plans for the long haired kid to eventually be the one who topples Crusher were scrapped and he never got his big break
> Crusher's own life was ruined when the foolish but ultimately simple deal to just give the money straight back with a little extra on the side as "thanks" went wrong
> All because Peter Parker worked himself into a shoot brother by cheating to use his super-powers against a normal dude trying to make the company he was loyal to big

Maybe JJJ was a fan and that's why he's so insistent that Spidey is a public menace.

Still one of the finest "life for everyone else in a super universe" comics ever made. Damn, this ending gets me every time. A genuine Tragedy.
>>
>>90715510
Hasn't his life already been ruined enough?

He should be, at most, someone given enough super powers to be a solid street level hero (because he isn't crazy enough to go out and do it without them, he's had enough of crazy theatrical nonsense in the ring), then really grind how shitty it was what Pete did right in his fucking face.

I'd pay good money for an issue that's just Crusher laying out exactly what a piece of shit Pete was to do what he did to them, but his secret identity would need to be leaked for that to work.
>>
>>90729610
Have him gain powers, and after toying with a life of crime for a bit he challenges Spiderman to a goddamn Texas Cage Match.
Ends with him helping to form a Superhero Wrestling Federation that essentially acts as a place for up-and-coming supers to get a name for themselves.
>>
>>90729610
>>90729682
>Have him gain powers, and after toying with a life of crime for a bit he challenges Spiderman to a goddamn Texas Cage Match.
FUCKING FUND IT
But wasn't this the part of Spidey's career before he took on the 'great power' responsibility? I'm sure he would apologize once Crusher informed him of who he was (though I'm sure that wouldn't let him duck out of the match).
>>
>>90729682
YES. That's better.
>>
>>90729746
Yeah, hell he literally ran into the guy that eventually shot Uncle Ben when he was walking out of the ring or something like that.
Personally I think it would be cool for Hogan to eventually piece together that Spiderman and that mysterious wrestler that beat him are one and the same, and challenge Spidey for revenge. Once Spiderman figures out what this is all about, he then helps him fund the league, either through Parker Industries or by calling in support from the avengers. Considering Songbirds history, she might be a natural person to rope in, maybe make it part of the T-Bolts umbrella
>>
>>90729746
Yeah, I'm sure he would, but seriously, it was a really shitty thing he did. Having him actually address the harm he did to other people in this incident beyond the whole 'getting Uncle Ben killed' part would be worth a read if well written.
