I liked it. I ended up watching the first episode twice. The first time, I was feeling a 6/10, the second time, I liked it a lot more. Maybe an 8/10. I think I was just in the wrong mindset. I'm definitely excited for the rest of the season.

A huge part of it for many people is absolutely nostalgia, there's no denying that.

However, I couldn't disagree more about the anime comparison. The themes and art style are simplistic, but the designs are memorable, the pacing is wonderful, and it manages to balance out its angst with humor and triumph that keep things engaging.

Jack's action scenes for some reason felt kinda off. In contrast, all Aku's daughters scenes were some of the best material that ever came from the show. Jack's brooding scenes were very good, too. All in all, solid start. I just hope the action isn't as stiff and not-"snappy" from now on.

It felt like a lot of scenes were cut too short, the pacing seemed weird in spots - and could have explained the loss of his sword just a bit more - even though I expect we will learn more soon.

For a show with notoriously slow pacing it went by incredibly fast. I feel it should have focused more on Jack and maybe leave the daughters of Aku for the next episode.
Scaramouch was a great villain though, easily ranking among the best of the original series. His defeat was kind of stupid however. Why did he just stand there when Jack was rushing him with his sword? His voice box was ruined but his other limbs seemed to work just fine. The scene where he called Aku on his smartphone was great, I was worried the humour of the earlier seasons would be lost in an attempt to make the show more mature.

Anybody else a little disappointed that the Daughters of Aku have essentially just been "tricked" into thinking Aku is good? I originally just assumed they were legit nuts and worshipped Aku in all his evil and destruction. Would've made for a better character arc in Ashi I thought.

The episode was kinda but I didn't get a few things:

1. How the fuck hasn't Aku realized that Jack has lost his sword? In the old series they meet a lot of times. In the flashback you see that Jack is pretty young so it must have been years since then. How has Aku not met with Jack once since he lost his sword or at least seen him through one of the bazillion cameras he has everywhere that he can also put in robots? There was that one episode where he's watching the shitty hired bounty hunters fail and commenting on it even though he's not anywhere close to where they are. Hasn't he watched Jack destroy anything else since then?

2. Why does Scaramouch just stand there and let Jack kill him at the end? It didn't look like he was damaged in any way. And why did he think an exploding dagger or whatever would kill Jack when the first one exploded in his face and didn't do anything?

Well, I've only seen the first episode, but going off leaks of the next two episodes, I'm going to guess Aku got bored of fighting Jack, since neither of them can defeat the other. It's like playing a game in which you always tie. Sooner or later, there's no point. Basically, as long as Jack has his sword which Aku thinks he does, he can't kill Jack, and Aku is too powerful for Jack to kill him.. I suspect Aku's bloodlust will be reignited when he learns Jack lost his sword, hence season 5.

I expect Aku to learn Jack doesn't have his sword after the Jack vs The Daughters of Aku fight. They might report back to the High Priestess or to Aku, who will ask about the battle and pick up that Jack never used his sword, which she/he will then inquire about, learning Jack no longer has it (if it's the High Priestess, she'll have to directly contact Aku).

The real difference between anime from the 80s+ and american animation from the 80s+ is simply the amount of talented people involved in the industry. You have the amazing ova boom for anime that cartoons havent reached yet in terms of quality animation, art style, story, music, animation direction, ect since the 1980s. There are many great examples of modern american animation being excellent beautiful and have wonderful themes artsyles characters and stories, samurai jack being one of them, but americans lack the simple variety of skilled animators the Japanese had at disposal to pass down and teach upcoming studios/animators. Not nearly as many perfectionist here as there is there, though they are loosing their magic as well since the mid 2000s.

It was good. A top tier episode of the original series with setups for a future running plot which is new for the series. Nothing really to fault it for so far. I'm glad Gendy stepped up his action game. The series has had pretty good fights but they're clearly going all out what with their 9 episode limit.

I rewatched the episode yesterday. I actually liked it better the second time than the first time.

If there's any one praise I can give it, it's that it's goddamned gorgeous. It's no less beautiful than the older seasons. It's such an aesthetically pleasing show to look at. And it uses the medium of animation to do really cool imagery, stuff that can only be done with relative ease in animation. It's a really stylish show. Only the few obvious uses of CGI looked a little iffy to me, although at least once, it was done really well, with the shot of the landscape off the reflection of the motorcycle pipes.

Otherwise, I still didn't like Scaramouche that much but that doesn't matter, since his was just a one-off appearance anyway. I'm hyped as fuck to see the Daughters of Aku fight Jack in the next episode.

Also, I really like Jack using a gun. I love the juxtaposition of his traditional samurai armor with his more modern or even futuristic technology and weaponry. I like that now that Jack's lost his sword, he's gotten a little more desperate and is now willing to use anything he can find to fight off his enemies now.

Invader Zim had the potential to have a really well fleshed out story. It was really consistent with how it handled its writing as far as storylines go. I was incredibly disappointed when the series abruptly ended without a satisfying conclusion.

In fact the whole show had an unusual amount of high quality characteristics about it. The cinematography was well above the average cartoon, hell, look at this background design.

It's too bad all anyone remembers about it is the randumb humor that it sometimes relied on.
