The problem is that these changes don't add anything to the show. It just makes things very inconsistent and confusing, and it can take you out of the episode.

If they want to diversify the art style, they have plenty of ways to do so, while still giving the show a uniform and consistent look. Corrupted Gems are especially great for this, because they have no consistent shapes and appearances - they could be whatever the aritsts want. And in that case, being corrupted would justify having different styles and inconsistencies.

Stick to one story. Lamar drawing Peridot with giant hair is a mistake. Sugar just happens to like it because she thinks noticing who drew what in an episode is charming since that's how a lot of her favorite animated productions are. What she doesn't realize is not only is this show not a good one to be following that principle on, but noticing who drew what based on how many mistakes there are becomes more stupid than charming. Typically the type of productions that followed that principle had GREAT artists where even a character who was off-model was still very well drawn.

This is not the case. All it does is demonstrate the huge gap in skill between good artists like Sugar, Raven, Jeff, and bad ones like Lamar.

As an illustrator, I even bet some compositions work better with off model characters. Some shots may have a need for a more threatening peridot while sometimes having her as big as steven makes her more comical and harmless. Art is about emotion and impression afterall.

Is that a joke? In comparison, Steven is drastically more detailed than the main Flapjack crew. Flapjack didn't even have shoes and pants separated, it was all one color. He didn't have any bone structure like characters like Garnet and Pearl do. They were specifically designed with noodle limbs in mind. It's the difference between a square and an pentagon. I'm mostly ok with the loose regards to being on-model some shows have, even if I wish some borders could do it a little better.
But it's that last one that bugs the crap out of me.

When the height differences actually start changing the way the characters interact with their environments from episode to episode in a continuity heavy show, your doing yourself a disservice.
It'd be one thing in a gag driven cartoon where every episode takes place in basically a different universe. However we're supposed to buy that these characters are the same that we saw at the end of the last episode, shit like 'is he tall enough to reach the kitchen top' actually affects that.

I can totally admire the desire to let different team members express themselves on your show but it was the lack of control on cohesion that effectively gutted Adventure Time.

The lore is interesting and I liked the Crystal Gems and Steven, but now the only characters that I really like are Connie and Greg.

Fucking Steven seems to flip flop between being mature with some issues or acting like an 8 year old kid. Garnet's whole character now seems to revolve around being a fusion when she was so much better before it was confirmed. Pearl just comes off as a psycho than a overly protective mother.
Peridot was interesting as the 'expert in tech alien exploring her new life on earth' like but now she is just the 'super excited alien kid'. And Lapiz came off as an asshole last episode by just being angry at someone else being happy.

Fuck me, it's so sad to see another show go the way of AT and Regular Show. And you know why this is?Because this three shows want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to be episodic and also have continuity, this can be done of course, but only when there is a clear focus. For example Samurai Jack, an action cartoon where they have to fight the villain of the season, or most Shonen Anime.

Yes, but at least AT and SU dip their feet into being an action cartoon. Even in not god-tier quality action cartoons like say Ben 10 or Danny Phantom, have a clearer focus than new cartoons have. Like, Ben has aliens of all sorts trying to get his omnitrix and later we learn that his grandpa was part of an alien police force and eventually the lore is expanded on that, the conflicts getting bigger and bigger. But in SU, we learn about Homeworld and the war, but it only comes up once in a while after that.

Now a days there's no damn conflict in Steven Universe, and if there is, it's solved as quick as it came. The Cluster, Jasper disappearing , then reappearing and in a few episodes she was bubbled. Now YD might invade earth but fuck if Steven is worried about that.
And not to mention AT where it feels like the good guys cause more problems than the bad guys do.

Of course, there are purely episodic action cartoons like The PPG, that do have recurring characters but it doesn't try to have continuity and it doesn't need it.

Also it sounds like the cluster was incredibly important and was thousands (was it thousands?) of years in the making. Fighting the corrupted gems was what made me like the series in the first place. I figured it'd be like adventure time where it'd be episodic adventures about fighting corrupted gems/leftover wild gem machines, and over time we'd learn little tidbits about the world and the war while seeing new interesting monster designs.

This slice of life shit ain't doing it for me.

It's just bad writing. They wrote really shitty background characters. Which is fine they are background characters for a reason. But even adventure time can make an episode about fucking Starchy or about a Snow Giant an a Lava Pup and it comes out really good.

The writers for SU are so bad.
