The Archie Sonic books have been delayed several months due to litigation. Archie can't print the issues until they clear up all the legal shit with the older writers who keep suing them. SEGA has been clear as day that they will not support Archie any longer if they're named in another lawsuit.

It's not for sure, but it's looking pretty good right now that Archie won't be holding onto the license for much longer.

The less sure thing is whether the SatAM characters will be permanently discontinued along with the old continuity. The continuity is almost entirely likely to go, as I doubt any new publisher would want to shackle themselves to that mess, and certainly a new creative team would want the freedom to start fresh with their own POV.

As for the characters, SEGA doesn't like them and they are illegitimate. Likewise, every characters from Archie, and every plot piece, has the shadow of litigation cast over it due to all the ex-Archie staffers constantly suing over petty bullshit. SEGA likely won't want to risk being named in yet another lawsuit just so some writer can use Rotor the Walrus or who the fuck ever.

These characters and their universe will likely go the way of Fleetway's Sonic the Comic and it's original setting and cast. That is, into oblivion.

The SatAM/Archie-original characters are largely irrelevant in today's Sonic universe and have just been through so much shit both in-story and real-world that they're just not fun anymore. Every attempt to make them "fit better" in contemporary Sonic just feels forced and weird.

Character archetype redundancy has been a big problem in the Archie Sonic books.

You've got Tails, Nicole AND Rotor all tripping over each other to cover the science/tech/computer wiz slot. For a good chunk of time Rotor was straight up written out of the book because he was so pointless and offered nothing. Even when they brought him back they couldn't think of anything to do with him because his spot was covered twice over by Tails and Nicole.

The Archie comic came out at the same time as the SatAM cartoon and featured the same characters and setting but took the story in different directions. It wasn't a narrative continuation of the SatAM cartoon, but an alternate universe version of it.

We've been over this countless times already. There's only so much you can do with game characters only before you run out of content to use.

There's no denial the satam cast isn't used in the comic as effectively as it could, but they have some leverage to be molded on character and backstory, something you can't do as easily with characters more defined and restricted you regularly see on the games. Plus, they existed already, and most of them (ok, somewhat) liked, so less risk with using a familiar face, instead of risking going with an oc that might not be liked (fuck you Tommy).
That cast, to a point (but mostly oc's), can open more opportunities of story creation. It's a case of "well we have characters here already to develop, let's use them".
If they did that and made a comic where they used game characters only, I'd give it 20-30 issues max, before writers go "uhh what do we do now? We can't do X because people see Y in the games"

The Archie Sonic book has never had an objectively good writer in its entire publication history. It has just had different levels of bad.

You could grade the book on a curve and consider Flynn "good by the standards of this comic" but you could never say that the comic has ever had a genuinely good writer attached to it.

I find this more annoying than the Bendis-style decompression thing.

Ian forces his Easter eggs and fanwank so hard into the dialogue. The lines sound so incredibly clumsy, like they're begging to be noticed.

The Sonic the Fighters storyline has been the only arc since the reboot that was actually fun or enjoyable.

Everything else has either been bland same ole same ole, or downright horrendous (the opening "get your memories back and then forget them again" arc).

I think Ian's bigger issue is just that he's been on the book for like 12 fucking years. He's fatigued and out of ideas. The books just needs a new writer.

Gallagher and DeCesare are legitimately good comedy writers who drew from the classics. They didn't put anything spectacular into Archie Sonic, but they damn well made a few good stories. To insult their talent just because they're not A or B list names is just stupid.

And despite their Spider-Man related output, Danny Fingeroth and Dan Slott are good writers (or at least were back when they contributed to the comic).

I haven't seen anyone storytime anything BUT the Sonic Fighters arc. But I concur, it was really enjoyable.
