Their ratings have fucking plummeted in the last few years, and even in the last few months. Last year premiers would hit 1.5-2 million, now they're hitting 0.8-1.1 million. It's like they're embracing their death spiral.
>>
Nick is just Spongebob, Loud House, and Henry Danger

Disney is fuck all I don't pay attention to it in yesrs, but I assume it's 3 tween sitcoms

But yeah TTG is Cartoon Networks Soongrbob and has basically destroyed the channel after it had just recovered from the 2007-2011 phase

The only hope is Disney XD. Which has a variety lineup, large numbers of good shows, and a promising future.
>>
>>90665818
CN is going for the younger demographic, and little kids will eat anything up regardless of variety. Just look at Spongelodeon.
>>
I wonder if TTG really is this cost effective.
>>
>>90665864
It's the Spongbob effect

>get a popular show that's cheap to make
>all your other shows start to finish
>just show the other thing instead of making anything new all day because you figure it'd be cheaper
>occasionally show a new show for a few weeks before putting it in a graveyard slot and cancelling it. Reruns of the old show continue
>network dies over several years as your once variety filled channel is now dominated by a single horrible monstrosity

Thou this is different because A.) Spongbob was much bigger than TTG ever was B.) SpongeBob was actually good at first

I really don't know what happened to CN. The ratings for TTG were never that amazing and it didn't become a global phenomena like SpongeBob 2000-2004. Shows like Adventure Time and even Stephen Universe generated for bigger fan bases. I think maybe the period unction cost is low because of the bad animation and minimal action
>>
>>90665967
You said it yourself. It's cheap to make. It's not a absolute ratings killer like Spongebob was in the 2000s but the ROI is probably comparable, especially since Teen Titans is owned by Time Warner.
>>
>>90665872
I agree. Motorcity, Tron, Randy Cunningham, Star Vs. and Atomic Puppet have been nice shows.

You know, this extremely /co/ related, since Cartoon network is literally a Cartoon Network. The way it handles itself is relevant to what will happen with some shows, few of which people actually care about on here.

I'm more confused why Supernoobs is there. I don't think that's aired since before last summer.
>>
>>90667398
I can't think of a single reason it'd rerun ever again. It went years being a silently running show, episodes premiering weren't broadcasted as new, many were exclusives online months before they aired on TV, and the last 4 years it was a running series there were no reruns and they went out of their way to remove the series from network bumpers and ads.

Along with what you said, a lot of shows die in reruns after it ends, so considering it was a zombie (in more ways than one) it's a done deal.

They haven't for awhile and never will again air holiday specials on their special days, and if every crew member died all at once they wouldn't air a tribute airing either.
>>
>>90665686

Ratings for their premiers are readily available on Wikipedia for any of their currently airing shows, they've collapsed across the board recently. Reruns are harder to gather but I doubt that the story's much better.

it aired in December as a burnoff bomb (ten new episodes in 2 weeks) paired with Uncle Grandpa (TWENTY new episodes in 2 weeks). Supernoobs got pulled after only one week (hilarious that it cant even get burned off apparently), but Uncle Grandpa still got both weeks.

Gumball and Cloudy both had 700k for premieres on Tuesday. TTG had 1.1m a few weeks ago.

Steven Universe went under 1m for the first time with Tiger Philanthropist, and with the random schedule change moving Room for Ruby moving up 30 minutes the day the episode was intended to premiere, things aren't looking up for that.

And if anything, Cloudy really should be cut because the character design is absolutely awful. It looks like the guy has a FUCK huge tumor on the side of his head rather than a nose.

One of the few cases where it works, but even there you can plainly tell that she (the character design) was originally designed in 3 dimensions and has been recreated in 2 dimensions.

Code Lyoko also faced the same problem, though they were helped by the series's ...odd 2D art style (fiveheads anyone?), the limitations on 3D modelling closing the distance in quality from normal hand drawn stuff, and the fact that both systems premiered at the same time for the show, rather than one following the other a few years later.

TTG is likely one of their cheapest to produce shows, does well with merchandising, and helps generate interest in any kind of Teen Titan focused movie or show WB might want to produce in the future. It's been run into the ground with the same episodes, and the humor has got grating. It has the same "Sorry I went on too long and I now I don't know what my point was so I'm gonna fade my voice ou-" kind of deadpan joke with few variations and it's annoying.

>Caring about cartoons

>>
>>90669960
Are Networks just min-maxing the fuck out of their schedules for advertising reasons?

There's a ton of variety in that lineup. If some kid sits down and doesn't like Johnny Bravo he's waiting maybe 15 minutes before another show comes on to catch his interest.
Now if you plop a kid in front of the TV and they don't like TTG, they're going to change the channel once they realize there's 3 hours of it before a different show comes on.

It's like they're begging for kids to either fall in line or change the channel
>>
>>90671191
It's simple really- a combination of aging executives that value their immediate profits over anything else, the cartoon market being oversaturated and only getting worse, and the fact that cartoons are not first in line for children/tween's attention anymore.

The old, out of touch executives want the safest and smallest investment to result in good profits, with no down time. Why? Because they'll be retiring relatively soon and want THEIR profit nest as big as possible. They couldn't care less about the financial health of the company beyond what it means for their paychecks.

As for the cartoon ecosystem, kids these days have near unlimited access to the internet with its extensive library of shows from the last few decades. Thus, their pool of shows to watch is many times larger than what was airing on television 15 years ago. Any new show airing now has to compete for attention with older properties that have easier access, more content, and usually better quality due to being created in a time of high competition. It's akin to the problem of ageless immortals- they'll always be that much more experienced than those that came afterwards.

Finally, kids just don't watch cartoons in the numbers they used to. Gaming has only gotten more popular and easier to get into. Streaming and YouTube 'personalities' simulate the feeling of having friends to such a degree that simply watching and listening to them is enough for a lot of kids. Add in the fact that while a cartoon takes months of work and thousands of dollars to produce 11 minutes of content, anyone with a webcam or a phone (so everyone) can easily produce many times more content DAILY.

>>90671923
I think the thing is that kids have more options these days, so instead of trying to attract new viewers they're just trying to hold on to the ones they have left.

If a bad show came on in the '90s, you only had 3 kids networks to choose from. So if Nick was showing Doug, Cartoon Network was showing Smurfs, and Disney was showing... whatever the fuck they used to show back then (I honestly didn't watch Disney much), you were just forced to deal with watching one of those shows until something good came on. Even if you wanted to do something besides TV, there weren't as many options available to you as there are to kids today, what with internet streaming shows and tons of free smartphone games.

Basically what I'm saying is that the networks feel that their only winning move is to constantly marathon one or two specific shows that they know kids like so they won't get bored and find something else to do.
>>
>>90672167

SpoilerTV revealed character info:
http://www.spoilertv.com/2017/01/thats-so-raven-spin-off-info-and.html

>the sequel to "That's So Raven" which will touch on divorce.

>>
>>90672632

Nope. The head of Disney Channel apparently wants to combat low ratings by turning Disney Channel into a teen network to fill the void ABC Family left (since Freeform has crashed in ratings).

They approached Terri Minsky who created Lizzie McGuire to do a more mature teen show for them. It's meant to usher in a new era for Disney Channel.

They haven't mentioned if that plan also includes cartoons or not. Hopefully we'll hear about some in development at their upfronts.

>>90672583

Andi is a 13 year old girl who lives with her parents when her rebellious sister Bex returns to shake things up.

Shortly after Bex returns, It's revealed that Bex is really Andi's mum. Bex gave birth to Andi as a young teenager, the people she's been calling mum and dad are really her grandparents.

Bex and her parents know who the father is, but they refuse to let Andi find out.

Meanwhile her 2 friends are also facing issues of their own. Her black friend is questioning her place in life while her guy friend is questioning his sexuality.

If we're lucky, this will take off and Disney will look into some older targeted animated shows.

>I wonder if they're going to push Freeform in an all-new direction. And I wonder if that direction could involve animation.

They seem to be torn between turning it into a comedy network or a sci-fi type Superhero network.

Most of the stuff they have in development falls into the 2 categories.

Eg they have a comedy about the life of Nicki Minaj in development. But they also have Cloak & Dagger coming along with an American remake of Misfits.
>>
Who's even watching CN? Most kids watch stuff online.
>>
>>90675507
An American remake of Misfits could work if they don't overly sanitize it or try too hard to copy the UK version. But they will. So the idea was always garbage.

Hope good tv can survive this dramatic transition the entire medium seems to be going through. Or more like I hope good American episodic and serialized animation can survive.

I don't have any kids I interact with a lot, but I hear people talk about younger siblings and cousins and they just will watch Minecraft LPs and shit like that. Just nonstop.

I saw an ad on the side of the bus for some unlimited data service saying it gives you 'more bingeing.' It made me realize that prior to a few years ago I had never heard the word 'binge' used with a positive connotation. Now 'binge' is a great marketing word to sell your service with!

For decades we've heard the lament of 'limited attention spans,' so perhaps we now see committing an almost unhealthy amount of time to absorbing just one thing is the obvious good. Maybe CN is trying to mimic that in some way.

I'll admit I haven't had CN in over a decade, but in my mind I remembered it as the "different cartoon every half hour" channel.
>>
>>90678961

On one hand having so little variety keeps your stock of viewers consistent, and consistency is what makes you money even if in the long term it's shitty to have all your eggs in one or two baskets.

On the other, I guess it's a model to show the other companies what not to do and to keep trying to diversify their assets. You never know what'll be the next big thing(fucking ponies and shit who would've guessed THAT one?)
>>
This has to be actively sabotaging the network, aren't they loosing loads by putting tons of money into the production of many shows but then not airing them at all which could give back some profit, or if the comeback is low, soften the blow of a loss beyond just giving it 0 airings?

And the same goes for purposefully airing new episodes with little to no promotion.

literally the last things i remember enjoying in life

Jack being back is kinda working on it, but I was never 100% big on it, I just like it.

Back when I actually downloaded the weekly S1 AT episodes. Everyone losing their shit over the apple pie elephant blowing up was great.

I am so fucking confused. I look to the side and see all of those shows they could be airing, but just flat out won't. Why? I mean, I know why, ratings and shit. But existentially, why. Why has this happened? Why is this happening? Why will it continue to happen?
>>
>>90679730
Wish I could've seen the reactions back then, I've only looked at AT talkback threads since maybe 3 years ago, since I occasionally watch it when I have nothing else to do.

Moreso back then than now.

Teen Titans Go! gets more then enough child watchers to be profitable for them.
If they could, they'd just turn CN into the TTG! channel. Gumball and this Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs TV series are lucky they haven't been chopped away either.

Cheap to animate, easy to market, and can have an almost infinite amount of scripts for episodes. Thus, making it easy to market and generates over a million views per episode.

This takes up literally over 50% of the schedule, no wonder it's the most viewed show because they recycle the same episodes over and over again. Something this recyclable will generate them a lot of money in the short run, but will bite them in the ass HARD in the long run.

That, or it'll be Spongelodeon 2.0, I certainly hope for the former so CN gets a renaissance age yet again like they did 7 years ago with Adventure Time.
>>
For anyone thinking it's coming to TTG all day every day, I think there's a contract thing where you can't air one single series, I mean not more than maybe a few days for an event or something. Longer than that requires special permission, like if the special event has to last for a bit.

Plus CN likes to pat themselves on the back for technically having a variety.

>Adventure Time
and others

It's always been one or two shows which bring the channel out of a slump. Back in the day it was Chowder and Flapjack, then it was Adventure Time and Regular Show.

Though out of all of them, I still liked Flapjack the most.

The did the sme thing with Johnny Test.

>Take a cheap show
>Let it take over the schedule
>Run it into the ground so hard the feel the lava
>dig out of the hole
>Air new shows
>Find a new cheap show
>Repeat

Kind of sad we're doing this a second time but maybe there won't be a third go around.

this is my fight song

Honestly I don't give a shit at this point if CN dies. It's on life support.
>>
>>90671075
Regular Show stopped getting lots of 2 millions in 2015, when they started shitting on it really bad.
>>
is there any news on infinity train? i saw the clip cn posted a couple months ago and it looked like it had potential.

>strong and smart female main character series

Except you don't?

The Hannah Barbara stuff was usually on during school or what have you. Kids would be more likely to see network originals.
>>
>>90680348
"Liking books" and "wearing glasses" doesn't equal being "strong and smart". Besides, it was painfully obvious that the series was going to have her learn to communicate with others and find out that friendships > knowledge.
Because God forbid anyone in modern Western culture ever wins because they're genuinely strong and smart, and not because of power of their friendship or plot armor. I mean, a character like that would be just mean-spirited and impossible to relate to, riiiight?
>>
>>90665686
The really sad thing is, none of those three shows are produced by Cartoon Network Studios US.

TTG is Warner Bros, Gumball is Cartoon Network Studios UK and Meatballs is by DHX Media.
>>
>>90679538
Those shows were like rays of light in the darkness when they were all airing together. That was in the midst of the CN Real push and the only other cartoon airing was fucking Chop Socky Chooks. The last time CN was good was right before then, and even then it was starting to slide a bit compared to the period from 2001-2005.
>>
>>90680348
nuPPG was their attempt to attract a larger female audience. They probably gave up after they failed.
>>
>>90680497
>it was painfully obvious that the series was going to have her learn to communicate with others and find out that friendships > knowledge
That reminds me of a certain show that must never be named.

At least she managed to send her ass packing once the LapiDot shit got out of control. Like, the damage is still done but at least she did this much.

Goddamnit, that's still god awfull though...
>>
>>90681633
Too little, too late.

The show stopped being good in season one, and stopped even being tolerable once they deleted Jasper, a.k.a. the only credible threat.
>>
I mean at least Gumball is good 75% of the time?
