From one interview with Genndy, it sounds more like he's lost all hope of ever killing Jack and has just gotten bored with everything as a result.

Given how he tried to call Aku, I'd say he was there on his own accord, not Aku's orders. Probably had a few good assassinations on Aku's non-Jack shitlist and figured he could take on the Samurai.

So why doesn't Aku know Jack lost his sword?

You kidding me? The last time Jack managed to lose his sword Aku went Old Testament on his ass. He only lost because he tried to shish-kebab him with the sword for that extra irony.

With the sword permanently gone Jack should have zero chance against Aku.
