There should have been a whole movie about these guys. This is the best example I can think of where people created incredibly awesome characters that were wasted on a movie that didn't go into depth about them. The team was so much more compelling than anything about Atlantis.

Nah, it was a design choice. It worked very, very well, and made for a far more interesting film than having everything be curvy did. Mike Mignola also had some influence on the film, resulting in a lot of the designs going on with the soldiers and Atlantis itself.

Atlantis is much better. Better story and it actually has a more 'mature' sense of humor than ENG.

Emperor's New Groove. That's not even a question.

They actually studied his style before hiring him. Like when Mignola first came into the Disney studio, his artwork was plastered all over the walls as the design team was dissecting all the Hellboy comics to get a sense of how he drew stuff and get that into the movie's aesthetic.

None, and nowhere. You can look this up yourself (and you can assume it looking at the damn thing) it was a TERRIBLE fucking design that didn't work at all. They built a few prototypes and they all sucked. If I recall correctly, one of the prototypes sank into the mud at the testing field, which was deliberately paved for the demonstration. They were never mass produced, let alone deployed. But that's why it's so fascinating. It represents that open period where all militaries were transitioning from horses to mechanical devices, so it was the Wild West of design. Nobody had any fucking idea about what would work. The Tsar Tank was a horrible fucking idea that sucked shit, but it was based on nothing, so you can't blame the engineers. They tried to tackle the obvious problems and failed horribly.

That's what I mean. Today, we hear the word tank and we immediately have a basic design fully formed in our minds. That's because tanks have existed for a century at this point. At the time, there was nothing to compare to. They were flying completely and utterly blind. They had a goal, and they had problems to overcome. Without anything to base your idea off of (treads and a solid body), then the idea of giant fucking wheels with a small steering base trailing behind would make sense as a means of accomplishing an all-terrain combat vehicle. At least, until you actually try it and realize it's shit beyond comprehension.

three way war between Atlantis, an army of humans sent from the surface(whether from another company finding out about Atlantis somehow or a surface nation, or even a collaboration I'm not sure yet), and another previously unknown subterranean empire(that would pretty much be a blatant expy of the Dinosaur Empire from Getter Robo), all while Milo and the others have to find a way to end the war before it leads to global destruction
>>
>>90640119

It would be easier to do if the world just starts with Sora and friends reaching the city awhile after Milo and the others discover it, thus meaning the only vehicles that would have to be used are the stone fish and maybe Rourke's planes though they could easily be replaced by Heartless.

Too bad Atlantis is one of the B-List films that have almost no way in hell of getting in due to not being popular enough. At the very least it could be a half-assed DLC level.

Atlantis probably has the highest body count of any Disney movie, and because of the pacing a lot of them happen really fast. Between the sinking of Atlantis at the start and the submarine fight as the expedition goes down to Atlantis, there are dozens of characters you see once or twice who are immediately killed, plus hundreds more offscreen. It's like Saving Private Ryan for children.

Exactly; On one hand you're gonna have a plot and themes WAAAAAAAY too complex for the Frozen and Big Hero 6-loving kiddies to understand and on the other you've got recent movies the older audience since the first game in 2002 don't care about being heavily focused on as opposed to the less-popuar stuff they actually have been waiting for since 1 IE Atlantis and Treasure Planet (Though TP could actually make it since a model of the film's ship was found in the 3DS game.).

As much as I love Atlantis it would have been better off as a live action film, at the very least financially. It's essentially an Indiana Jones action-adventure style pulp movie but it being animated and carrying the Disney name killed its chances of success.
Translating the Mignola concept work to live action via practical effects and keeping everything the same as it is (character personalities/appearance, script, etc) would have made a fantastic movie.

tl;dr its a movie without an intended audience due being an animated all-ages action adventure in a culture that sees animation as purely childish.

Imagine if the story would have been split into two movies. The first one is their odyssee to Atlantis where they start warming up with each other and ending with wide shot of seeing Atlantis for the first time.
In the secound we have the story play out in Atlantis itself and is more mystical as a contrast to the way more dieselpunky first one.
That way every aspect and concept art we have seen in this thread, from cool machinery to lava whales could have had time to appear and being established properly.

It could have been glorious.

Sure, I don't see why not. It's not like a plane or a tank, where there's weight limits to worry about, you can make a boat as big as you want. The only reason not to is on a "The bigger they come, the harder they fall" basis - better to make multiple smaller boats than a giant big one.
>>

I can seldom believe how stupid Willis can get. Like, with his logic, French should never correct British people when they maker a grammar mistake, because why does this foreigner think he knows more about English than someone from the country itself?

Make it a trilogy, the first two like you said and the third being about blending Atlantis culture and tech with the modern world leading up to WW2.
Tensions are high as counties are in an arms race with the high tech, climax of the movie is when the Leviathan attacks NYC.
Seeing the devastation cooler heads prevailed and WW2 is averted. World enters a Golden Age.

Hey, /co/, thanks to this film I've grown to love dieselpunk and adventures into the unknown. Only issue is that I can't really find much like it. I tried looking through lists of movies, but the few that exist usually only have like five. Do any of you know any good ones?
>>
>>90670771
Good animation, especially with Eris. Generally it looks great.
Most of the movie was a little uninspired to me
>>
What's the distinction between steampunk and dieselpunk? I can see the "diesel" influence in the car and truck concepts here, but the submarines, balloons and many other things seem to have a Victorian steam-powered design motif as well.
>>

I gotta say the only think I don't like about the "-punk" stuff is the amount of times it's done terribly. Like Atlantis would be a good example of well done dieselpunk, and I've seen good atompunk and cyberpunk and steampunk.

But then you have so much bullshit steampunk

If you go outside with a lightbulb most of the light will travel off into space. If you go into a cave with a lightbulb the light will bounce back off the cave-walls and light everything better.

Every small crystal, bio-luminescent fungi and firefly inside the caves would keep it lit.

My Character Design teacher HATED this girl, he would always take any opportunity to mention how she was rushed and had not consistency with the rest of the characters.
Not sure why, I find her fitting and one of the coolest looking characters. Is it something to do with angles/structure? Beats me.

Holy shit, this animation gave me an instant boner. Is it like that all throughout? I don't remember much.

Actually, did ANY of the actual sailors survive? Or did they all go down with the ship while the mercenaries they were transporting got to escape in the few lifeboats?

Kind of like how the engineers aboard the titanic stayed in the belly of the ship, keeping the lights going for as long as possible so that people would be able to see, knowing they were toast.

The crystal acts as a sort of water pump, pulling water that's fallen below back up to the tabletop. Additionally, you have a cloud system because of water that ends up falling onto some of the lava fields and becoming rising steam.

Day/Night cycle is related to crystals embedded in the ceiling harmonizing with the big one or something, mixed with light from the lava fields.

This is my memory from the official guidebooks they put out, but I'm having trouble remembering where I last put them.
