From what I've seen a lot of /co/mrades like Kiwi Blitz and Sleepless Domain. Just not in the way where they want to have endless discussion about them. They're pretty familiarized with the storylines and characters but don't have much in the way of theories and aren't interested in waifuing.

I'm an actually qualified English teacher in Japan who's been here for way longer than I really should have stayed at this "job," currently working in one of the select pilot school for the upcoming (2020-ish) English education overhaul.

The current ALT system is going to be completely unsustainable when the new curriculum standards take effect nationwide. Well, 5th and 6th grades get English classes multiple times a week and actually learn phonics, writing, and grammar. They pretty much learn what used to be what they'd only start in first year Junior High.
This alone means you either need actually qualified ALTs, or Elementary teachers need to actually learn English. Neither of which the Japanese want to do for various reasons that I could go on all fucking day about and I'm already the third of a way through a fucking bottle of Suntory's Hakushu so it'll get ranty.
Grades 1-4 are getting weekly English lessons instead of monthly, which SOME school districts always did anyway, but the current 5th/6th curriculum is getting bumped down to 3rd/4th and 1st/2nd is getting a more "advanced" curriculum since they'll be getting regular weekly lessons.

So for example in Japan they have a hard time making the TH sound because it literally doesn't exist in Japanese, they can't say it because they've never learned it outside their shitty English classes which, I guarantee, never even go over it. Japanese kids will legitimately get confused and not understand what "three" means but will recognize "saree."
They also can't discern any difference between L and R because, again, the sound doesn't exist in Japanese. The "ra, ri, ru, re, ro" sounds are actually not R at all though are romanized as R, and actually sound like a combined R and D sound, like a rolled R but done once if you get what I mean.

As a person with a very different mother tongue (and I do mean very different, the whole language is structured completely differently) who started to take English lessons in school at age 9 and have also studied some other languages in school, it's not that hard at all. As someone who has worked in the industry for quite some time and has seen how JETs "teach" first hand, I laughed out loud at that "competent" bit. JETs are easily the most incompetent teachers I've ever dealt with, hands down.
