No, it's full of filler episodes, has nothing to do with the plot, and is full of silly shit until the Groggy Ring and Foxy vs Luffy. The anime is best in it's early episodes. The filler was contained, mostly, to it's own arcs that could be skipped (unlike Bleach where filler became part of the show) and the episodes were paced far better. It wasn't really until Skypeia that the pacing started to drag itself around, and then Enies Lobby is where pacing really hit, because the anime caught up with the manga, and it's been like that ever since.

The old episodes however have done great things. Comedic timing, voice acting, animated fights, fuck, Luffy vs Crocodile in the anime is amazing.

There's no hole it can fill, there's no perpetual fanbase of kids getting their kids into it, and nobody wants to have to sit through 400+ episodes of poorly paced adaptation when a nice 26 episode anime like JoJo exists that can scratch the same each.

It goes to show that much of One Piece's success really was right place at right time, and not some amazing core of quality that attracts people in large numbers.

There was no wide appealing Shounen easy to follow for kids and teens, and people were looking to replace a hole and One Piece worked. It was simple inoffensive fun that managed to fill the exact niche that Dragonball did, which neither HunterxHunter or Naruto could because they just weren't similar enough.

One Peice isn't amazing. It's not some immaculate form of manga perfection. It simply mastered filling a niche that existed and was able to explode because of the soil Dragonball had created and left behind. That's how it managed to create it's massive fanbase. The thing is, that little hole doesn't exist anymore and it doesn't exist in the West anymore either. In Asia you might have a self perpetuating machine in which kids who were in their teens now have kids they get into One Piece but that doesn't exist here. You have so many more options now, so many variants that you don't NEED to commit to One Piece like you did twenty years ago.

Im sorry, but you cannot compare the situation of One Piece in Japan to it in America and then use that as proof of your argument. In Japan, One Piece comes out every week, in America, Shonen Jump comes out monthly. One Piece has been airing for years in Japan. America's first shot at One Piece was the abomination of a 4kids dub that took out and ruined so much of One Piece that it wasn't even One Piece anymore. That early 4kids was the first time for a lot of people, and thus it stained their impression of it. Following that, Funimation's version was following in the footsteps of 4kids, and they had to draw in that audience that was already stained by 4kids.

So no, it wasn't right place, right time, it was completely different situations. One Piece is amazing, it's not perfection, but it is a fantastic series, and it's popularity is proof of it. Being THAT popular and still having a massive following is not attributed to filling a niche, especially since One Piece outsold Dragonball years ago, if it was just about niches, Dragonball would still be more popular because it came first.

Oh, you're not overhyping it, it's a fact that Kamen Rider is darker than Sentai. Sentai is aimed at actual children, it's why it's always so bright and cheerful, has lots of comedy, and has dance numbers at the end. Kamen Rider is also a kids show, but it is also aimed at older audiences, since it has less kid friendly themes, more aggressive violence, blood, murder, crazy people, the list goes on. Some Kamen Riders are a little more kid friendly, like Den-O and Fourze, but even then they still have some dark themes.

Before I got into KR, I'd think you were over hyping it, but after I saw that one Ex-Aid special where that one guy from Ryuki came back and fucking shoved Emu's head into a garbage can full of broken glass and stepped on him, I was surprised in all honesty.

I think that's also why I just can't get into Sentai? Though I love Power Rangers. Tried ToQ and it was a bit too light for me, I dunno.

(Ex-Aid's been getting darker than I expected too, but is still enjoyable and I'm glad for that.)

Could ANYONE adapt a kamen rider show? It almost seems like Saban and his skullduggery would raise its hackles if anyone attempted it.
