There is actually a check list of things that studios keep track off while making a movie and will make changes to make sure that a film is PG-13. You would have to be a monumental idiot to accidentally make an R movie.

Superman movies should be hard PG filled with dread but Kal-El literally changes the lighting and lightens the mood with joy and hope
