What went wrong?

As much as some people hate to admit it, not having George Lucas.

Lucas is bad at alot of things, most things really, but he had more money and resources that most normal people didn't have. TCW for him was meant to be a redemption of sorts, to show that he really did know what he was doing and wasn't a complete hack. Because of this it had a lot of resources put in, gradually improved and had some actual heart.

Lucas is a greedy idiot with an ego, but I believe he did genuinely care about the franchise despite not really knowing what to do with it.

You just plain can't do much with the rebellion era, especially pre OT.

The thing about TCW is that the war was a serious thing with primary goals and arcs that went multi season. They did a death star run on their first episode and just kept going from there with engagements using multiple destroyers and multiple squadrons with unique decals per ship.

The rebel alliance simply does not have those resources. The stuff that goes into one no name battle group attributed to one jedi like Anakin who wasn't even a master, would probably account for like a third of the rebel fleet in and of itself since he had three capital ships, escort cruisers double the size and power of blockade runners, and ten times the fighters that were at Yavin.

The writers also cling to that like fucking gospel. Every other episode is about how their fuel gauge is empty and even if they just got a whole bunch of it, it's not good enough.

You'd think if they really wanted to just be done with it they'd find a crashed Venator and steal all those Y wings and supplies but that's apparently asking too much.

TCW's high points were better than Rebels', but nothing in Rebels has ever come close to shit like Gascon or the Jar-Jar episodes (sans the Windu ones).

I honestly think it's because a filler episode in TCW could take a break and focus on a different set of characters.
Because Rebels has such long seasons, it feels like it drags out more, apply that with only getting 20 minute episodes sporadically over a year a season and suddenly you've created monotony.
Then you add the fact that none of the main characters appear in any mainline movie so we won't get answers as to what happened to them until the show feels like ending. I personally got to a "well who cares" point because these aren't the guys who are changing shit in the universe unlike Anakin and Obi after TCW.

The direction and tone of Rebels is entirely different. There is no sense of grandeur. TCW had tons of various characters in a spotlight.

Only thing I disagree with here is calling Lucas greedy. The money he puts towards charity is absolutly amazing.

Ezra should have been influenced by the Dark Side via Kreia's holocron, and his arc in season 3 should have him struggling to find his place in the world while clinging to both Maul and Kanan.

Maybe by the time that extremist cell/Saw comes around, Ezra gets into a fight with Kanan after siding with Saw's methods.

Over the course of season 3, he forms a genuine bond with Maul and his loyalties to the rebellion are tested.

As of now Ezra's growth is just stunted.

The reason the Ghost crew has these characters is because of the OT. Every crew has to have a droid. Every crew has to have some fucking ugly-to-look-at alien. Every crew has to have a gunslinger. A pilot. Some waste-of-space that uses the force (most of the time). It's just the "Star Wars formula for success!"
