Why is this movie so perfect?
Disney quality without the "family friendly" atmosphere.
Consistent tone and focus. It was comedy, start to finish. There was no attempted drama moments or heart-string tugging digressions.
It was made during the post-musical era where they weren't afraid to get weird with the movies. The only exception to this was Treasure Planet, which was relentlessly mediocre.
>>90586936
It didn't try being a "profound" animation.
It was literally just a cartoon movie and it aged better because of it.
>>90586989
>He havent heard of Kingdom of the Sun.
>>90587285
This is an instance where I'm quite certain we live in the better timeline.
>>90587316
15 years later something similar happened.
>>90587528
For that one, I would still like to see the original idea play out. We got a good movie, but I'm still curious how the control-collar thing would have been handled.
>>90588219
it was weird, in one second you were laughing at their mysery, and then taming party scene shames you for that.
>>90588328
I'm not opposed to emotional whiplash if it's intentional and done well.
>>90588359
when it was ever done well?
It's not.
Yzma and Kronk are literally perfecto 10/10 GOAT but Kuzco definitely has some total misfire memey jokes and his whole redemption arc isn't really has well executed as it should be.
>>90586903
Because it feels like Dreamworks movie and not Disney at all
>>90588535
Pull the lever Kronk!!!
>>90587285
I do like the yzma song from that, but I really like the movie we got. I wish I could've at least seen that song fully animated

Yeah the whole movie relies on how funny it is, but its too funniest characters are offscreen for enough of the runtime to make the movie just okay for me. If a movie is going to be carried by it's comedy it has to be funny throughout.
It doesn't help that Goodman seems somewhat uninterested and doesn't have anywhere near the level of chemistry with Spade as Kitt and Warburton do with each other.
>>90586903
Fantastic chemistry between the MCs (and the villains for that matter) and the fact that it's probably the most non-Disney Disney movie.

If they were able to incorporate this into the movie, it would have gone from a 10 to an 11.

two*
Can't believe I misspelled that.
>>90591231
I dont know what I was expecting.
I just rewatched this movie a few months ago. I would say if there's anything holding it back, it has to be the "le so random XD" humor throughout. I get that it was 2000, but even if you pretend that "random XD" humor is funny, they still rely too much on it.
Wish the game got more love

*pulls wrong lever*
>>90586903
>Had Eartha Kitt
>Eartha Kitt made a song for the movie
>Didn't use the song or make a new song, despite still having EARTHA FUCKING KITT
Never forgive, never forget
>>90586903
I'm shocked nobody has said this yet, but...It's because they made it just right.
>>90593054
Nobody said it because it's an old meme.
>>90588535
I think part of the reason they succeed is because they're such a beautiful, perfect pair:
>Yzma is old as fuck, Kronk is probably in his 20s or so
>Yzma is smart, Kronk makes sound effects to be stealthy
>Yzma's design is slender, thin, and dark, Kronk is hueg, round, and bright
>Yzma makes tons of small movements and bounces around, Kronk just does things regularly
>Yzma's shrill voice & Patrick Warburton
They're probably one of the best duos Disney has ever produced. Lilo & Stitch had some of the best characters they've made too. Maybe there's some threads there to compare to modern things that fizzle out and have no lasting value.
>>90586903
Disney is great when it's set in a setting that's not jerking it's self over being accurate to the culture and just has fun like new grove and Aladdin.
I love it as as a not-so-subtle homage to old looney toons cartoons
Thank god they didn't go with the original concept for this.
>>90588535
You're right, by all accounts it doesn't make sense.
Since this movie always reminds me of it, why didn't The Road to El Dorado do as good as well?
Yeah it feels a little slow, but it was still a pretty good buddy-romp. Miguel and Tulio acting like gods was pretty entertaining.
I like New Groove more than El Dorado, but surely it doesn't deserve the ~40% score it has on Rotten Tomatoes.
>>90586989
Fuck you, I liked Treasure Planet.
>>90597530
Because non Disney animated movies always do poorly no matter the quality
>>90601295
Shrek did well, didn't it?
>>90594747
It was the best memeof 2016, was it not?
>>90591540
I love Eartha Kitt and the song is decent, but that motivation is terrible and I'm glad they didn't go through with it. It's funny how the final product was more comedic and yet gave us a much more sensible villain.
>>90586903
It's closer to being a great feature-length version of Looney Tunes than the actual Looney Tunes movies which were made.
>>90586903
For multiple reasons, really.
In general I think the biggest one is because it's so far off from what you'd expect Disney to do. Its like if Mel Brooks was asked to produce a Disney movie.
Back then, this was the first Disney film is years that was not a blockbuster musical romance with a "be yourself" message. It was pretty radical for Disney actually, especially considering that this actually came out before Shrek.
And I think it's also because this was a movie that wasn't even really supposed to exist. So much shit happened during production, so much of it was changed, that instead of doing a generic fantasy tale, they just threw their hands in the air, said fuck it, and made a completely different movie that, instead of trying to be a dramatic and epic, it was funny, short and completely different from what Disney was associated with.
They stopped giving a shit and just tried to be as funny as possible while taking a piss on the Disney cliches they were supposed to incorporate into the movie.
>>90593054
I sometimes forget that´s where that memel comes from.
This is probably my favorite Disney film alongside Fantasia and I've watched it at least twice a year for the past 19 years.
The Brazilian Portuguese dub is honestly one of the best of it's kind ever made. The voice actors just improvised a shit ton of lines (which they are usually not allowed to do) and it worked tremendously well (and there is no David Spade either).

>>90586903
Kuzco is the best Disney Princess.
Talking seriously, it broke the mold of Disney Movies and has Yzma and Kronk as one of the funniest villains in Disney.
Also lot of jokes that are not run into the ground like Family Guy. If there's a joke you don't like there's probably one that follows that is funny.
>>90597530
I always felt that the animation and art style were pretty similar to the Prince of Egypt, I felt it didn't suit the movie given the more comedic tone. If the movie was a little bit more loose in style like Emperor's, it would have been better received.

>>90597530
When was the last time Dreamworks Animation made such epic movies?
>>90602021
>What isLOOK AT THIS NET
>>90604765
Hand Drawn ones? I remember that there was also Sinbad and Spirit but they didn't do too well in comparison with Pixar
I would say that even if not hand drawn, HTTYD are some of the best Dreamwork films.

good posts, lads
>>90604957
Too bad hand drawn animation is dead to them.
>>90604765
Unironically, Kung Fu Panda 2.

Me too. It portrayed modern racism so accurately:

???
I thought everyone here loved Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2?
>>90605881
There are some people who have never watched the movies and just think they're typical wacky Jack Black/Dreamworks bullshit.
>>90586903
Well ya got me... by all accounts it doesn't make any sense.
>>90606113
You could certainly understand that by just going by the trailers. KFP2 had no right being as great as it was.
>>90604957
Shame, because I really enjoyed both of those. I still think outside of HTTYD, Dreamworks has not created anything to match up with their old 2D work.
>>90597530
>why didn't The Road to El Dorado do as good as well?
Mothers couldn't handle Chel
>>90604765
The Kung Fu Panda series.
Especially 2 and 3 (3 is gorgeous although 2 has the better story)
>>90586903
0 romance BS
0 musical BS
Good comedy and good performances.
Definitely my favorite animated Disney film.
>>90604957
>Spirit
The horse movie? That was fucking terrible.
