fanfiction is sort of like a math quiz with the answers on the back. you have a clear reference of how these particular characters should talk and act, the tone, the setting, the lore etc. learning how to imitate an established consistency improves your ability to keep your original work consistent.

it's also the fastest and most direct way to get feedback on your implementation of different writing techniques, story structures, the way you approach certain themes, and shit like that. you post an original short story on your blog you get maybe two likes an a generic comment of approval. you post a fanfic on AO3/FF.net, you get more people pointing out what they did and didn't like

then there's the eternal temptation of fixfics. a lot of what I learned about pacing and structure came from the trial and error that went into a long-ass fix fic I did as a teen, and honestly its just cathartic.

then there's crackfics, it's so hard to replicate the kind of absurdist humor you can get out of a good crack fic. and even without making something a fullblown massive multi-crossover, you can achieve a way denser level of intertextuality when you're free to just disregard copyright and trademark

I'm guilty of both writing and reading it. I mostly work on OC projects as well as some of my own original stories. When I do write for fandoms, it's usually about minor/background characters within the fandom.

My friends and I got bored one weekend and did a tabletop RPG one shot with the premise of a big multiversal crossover problem. The rule was you had to play something from popular culture, and once they submitted their characters I would come up with an enemy for them to fight from none of their settings.

Which is how I ended up running a short game of Master Chief, Gordon Freeman, the 10th Doctor and Luigi vs a multiversal dyson sphere built by 40k Necrons.

If running the game didn't count as fanfiction, storytiming it on /tg/ years ago certainly did.

It was about a never ending Trash Can Day. The gang had been running away for years from the rest of the 5th graders.

It was incredibly cheesy.

Once yes. It was how I met my best friend, (later sorta-girlfriend, now the one that got away).

What we wrote was awful like most fanfiction. Still, it was fun.

I still read some on occasion but I'm a lot more picky than I used to be.

That sounds like a Sense of Right Alliance sequel, I hope you got some fan art of those characters together Anon.

Just smut for me, but I like to think I put a decent amount of effort into writing the characters to act in-character.

I read fanfiction but I never take it seriously, it's just to see what weird things people will write about and giggle about it with my friends. The weirdest /co/ thing I've found was a holocaust AU south park yaoi fic that was written completely seriously and was long as fuck

Code Geass, Wakfu and Undertale were all like one fic apiece though so I don't know if they count.

Never wrote smut.

I read some, not my coup of tea. Never wrote one because I always found that to be pathetic.
