So I've worked my way through most of the first season of adventure time and I'm kind of getting a little irritated. Is there a general recommendation of episodes I should watch?
That depends on what you're irritated about. The general opinion is that seasons 2 and 3 are the golden era of early AT, so I'd stick out a little longer and if you're still not enjoying it then drop it.

also if you're watching mainly for any sort of overarching storyline drop this hard now

This too. I'll also say that there probably are a couple of episodes you could skip, but most are either worth watching anyway or become relevant later on. But as the other anon said, AT doesn't have an overarching narrative so if you're watching it just for plot, you're gonna have a bad time.

AT does contain continuity, but nobody really watches it for the storyline. Though it is an interesting watch, in the least.
If you don't like it then I recommend you don't watch any of it. Particularly because it's going to get a little better and then a lot worse.

Although if they don't like early AT, there's a decent chance they'll prefer the more recent stuff.

If you don't like the first season you might enjoy the latter seasons more where the cast has mellowed out somewhat.
Regardless you should stick with it anyway so you can get the full experience

Dunno about that.
Big difference in experience when binge watching compared to getting by televised broadcast. I enjoyed all the supposed terrible episodes when I was able to quickly go back and see how everything connected.
Maybe I'm weird, but I skipped virtually the entirety of seasons 1 and 2 because they were boring and just watched the plot episodes up to season 7. Wasn't that bad.

Gross. Please immediately correct your mistake.

Fuckarse. Most of the plots derive from S1 and S2 and the ones that didn't were left over -except from Prismo's arc.
