Seems like this show lost all the goodwill the other Netflix Marvel shows had by dint of it's orientalist storyline. But honestly most of these shows haven't been that good. Daredevil started off well but was already showing cracks by the end of the 1st season, it got a new lease on life thanks to the Punisher but apart from that S2 was a step down. Jessica Jones was pretty good but like all of these shows it drags and should've been shorter. I never finished Luke Cage for that reason. Now Iron Fist doesn't even have hype going in.

Thinking about it, the fact that they did Iron Fist at all is really strange. Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones all have a common realism/ground level theme inherent to those characters. Why are they taking a character whose origin involves punching a fucking dragon and making him solely street level and stripping all the mysticism away?

The closest they've done to something like that is replacing Martian Manhunter with Cyborg on the Justice League, and even then they haven't always brought attention to Cyborg and pointed out how he's the real heart of the Justice League.

There were a lot of red flags with Iron Fist. It's a square peg when it comes to their Netflix formula and Finn Jones has forgettable acting skills, no martial arts experience, and was probably cast purely for some clicks from the GoT audience. Disappointing since it was the Marvel show I was most anticipating, but not too surprising that it's the failure of the batch.

I wasn't expecting Roots. They marketed Cage as a mid 90s hip hop urban show set in a historically black setting (Harlem). What we got was a corny neo-blaxploitation show with half-assed thematic elements, namedropping of black historical figures (with no further exploration), and pretty much every single character on the show was a in-name-only version (as in nobody was anything like their comic counterparts).

What was the point of making Luke and Willis brothers? What was the point of making Luke from the countryside and a son of a pastor? What was the point of making Luke so fucking bland and corny (pretty much the exact opposite of his comic counterpoint)?

And name-dropping black historical figures doesn't mean shit if you don't do shit with it. I expected the show to touch on black history (especially in Harlem with the Harlem renaissaince and whatnot).
