Why does /co/ like this show?

Does it have some sort of hipster appeal because "lol so redneck ecks dee"?
>>
Cute rednecks doing cute things.
>>
Because it's hilarious, charming, and went on for like ten seasons without getting shit.
It's cool having a cartoon that is actually relaxed and down to earth and not wacky and loud all the time.

It's the closest thing that American animation has to a slice of life cartoon. It's comfy and simple.

It's subtle with comfy slice of life comedy, I remember not liking it when I was a kid but rewatching it I really appreciate how real a lot of these characters feel.

It's just a nice, relaxed show that finds humor in the mundane and is much less over the top than its brethren like South Park...while still having a knack for social satire like them.

Also, a lesser stated fact is that people like it for the same reason people liked Cheers back in the 80s: female characters are treated like regular people instead of being the purest, most sensible snowflakes in the room. unlike most domestic sitcoms.

it isn't DUDE GORE AND CUTAWAY JOKES LMAO like Family Guy and it isn't DUDE TOPICAL HUMOR LMAO like South Park. It's a slice of life with realistic characters. The humor either comes from Hank's traditional values clashing with the world around him or the odd quirks from the characters themselves (Dale being a conspiracy theorist, Bill being /our guy/, Boomhauer's wisdom despite his speech patterns). Plus it had the balls to poke fun at the hypocrisy of liberal yuppies without going over the top about it.

Part of me is glad and upset that it ended. On one hand it ended while it was still good but on the other hand there really hasn't been a show since to do the whole animated sitcom slice of life thing so well and no I'm not even going to give that anon a (you)

Because it doesn't insult my fucking intelligence with a bunch of slapstick

Mind you, I have no problem with slapstick when appropriate and Dale often wades into that pool but the comedy is way more subtle and sometimes even cynical

>>90521275
Also THIS

I live in Texas and this really is a pretty good representation

I also love how Hank doesn't have to have a bunch of zany off the wall adventures like the Simpsons in later seasons.

And what the fuck is wrong with just being happy with your fucking job and life? This is one thing wrong with America, that men like Hank Hill are in short supply.

He loves his fucking family, takes pride in his fucking job no matter how menial and unimportant it is to him it's his life, and generally just wants to work hard and do his best.
He finds pride in doing manual labor, home repair projects and fixing his truck and even gets excited when someone needs to repave their driveway.

I tell you hwat, if you fuckers had a little more Hank Hill in you, if everyone did, the world would be a better fucking place.

>I tell you hwat, if you fuckers had a little more Hank Hill in you, if everyone did, the world would be a better fucking place.

The whole joke is that they find delight in menial pursuits. It's an antiquated vision of what life should be and ultimately a parody of that. They can't find better because they don't know better.

I've seen some of the show and it ironically wanks itself on tradition. Like Hank getting all emotional when he's forced to stop teaching kids shop (those pesky liberals).

The joke is that none of that shit matters. The only people who take it for face value are dumb rednecks. How nobody sees this on /co/ is beyond me.

That episode had nothing to do with liberals. It was a criticism of the trend for the education system that took money away from learning practical skills and instead focuses on standardized tests.

You know how people rag on millennials for not knowing car maintenance or how to do laundry or take care of their personal documents? All of that used to be part of standard school curricula but it got taken away so students could spend more time on filling out ovals.

You gotta take some pride in your life, some pride in what you do, no matter what it is, man, or else how the hell are you gonna go through life?

Anyway sticks and stones, you can say I sound like a redneck I don't care if I am or not.

I'm not sure KotH could handle the topic of Trump all that well, at least right now. At its heart, this is a pretty idealistic and "we're not so different" kind of show, so dealing with one of the most polarizing POTUS in recent memories would be hard. Maybe it'd be easier in a few years and if the Trump administration turns out to be business as usual.
>>
>>90523293
The funny thing is that I more or less agree with you. However, I think the problem is less that people shouldn't be dissatisfied with a simple, hardworking life, and more that we should make simple, hardworking lives something you should actually want to have. Blue collar work is seen as shit work, because it usually is - hard work for not much pay, little respect from your peers, probably no formal education so you probably talk like a dumbass.

As such we champion the idea of white collar work, or academic work - but to be frank, most people are too stupid for that shit. There is very little meaningful work to be done in academia or business that isn't already being done by someone better.Life only has the meaning you give it, and blue collar work is a good way to generate that meaning - it's steady and solves problems in a tangible way. There's no reason for it to be so socially and financially unviable.

So I agree that we as a society should value blue collar work more, but yelling at people about it won't help change their minds. You need to convince them, logically or emotionally.
>>
>>90523193
so being unhappy with your current way of life and being angry with the current state of society but not knowing what to do about it makes you a redneck?
>>
>>90521129
>>90521108
>>90522910
If you dismiss Hank as simply "a redneck" then you're missing the point of the show altogether

Does he live in a trailer park? NO
Does he ever show the slightest pinch of racism? NO
Does he own a ton of fucking guns? NO

The punchline is he's just a regular hardworking old school fellow who just happens to live in Texas, yeah some of his values are old fashioned but he even shows that if shown a good reason he can actually change and adapt as well, he's not as stubborn as rednecks are.

Hank subverts every hilbilly narrow minded bigot trope out there yet people just glance at the show and if they don't actually watch and/or understand dismiss it as HURRR REDECKS SO DUMB XD

If you paid attention you'd see this

>>90523516
>Blue collar work is seen as shit work, because it usually is - hard work for not much pay

Sadly you're right. It didn't use to be like that, you used to be able to go to a factory and work hard but come home with a nice steady paycheck that would support your family, but all of that is going the way of the dodo.

Hi hello.
I am a little confused as to what exactly you two mean when you say that blue collar work is unviable. I was under the impression that learning a trade was for more lucrative than college is due to the way things are turning out: EG, "le computer science"" shit and everyone and their mother going to collge, creating a shortage of blue collar workers.

I get that blue collar work is shit on in the public eye, but financially? Dont welders and plumbers make a shit ton of money annually?

maybe cuz they can relate to it and that they're all dumb rednecks

>>90523647
>Dont welders and plumbers make a shit ton of money annually?

Yes they do actually

There's still a lot of jobs where you build things with your hands where you can make a ton of money, take pride in a hard day's work, and come home happy to your wife and kids

And this is what Hank Hill is about.

He's not a narrow minded bigot, he's not a redneck, he's a little old fashioned and hard working but he loves his family and always tries to do the right thing in his view

We should all be so lucky as Hank Hill, who makes a decent living wage (he never really seems to be strapped for cash at any point, and for fuck's sake his wife is a substitute teacher) has an eccentric son who at the end of the series starts to come around, and a piece of ass wife who is annoying and naive but still well-meaning

Funny, the consensus on /co/ is that she's an horrible, perfectly hateable human being. But then that's how young audiences feel about most sitcom wives.

The best thing about King of the Hill is that it's one of the only modern comedy shows that doesn't turn all of its central cast into awful people.

It's like honestly really wholesome in an optimistic way but still manages to be funny because of how invested these people are in their own lives.

>>90523647
People who do specialized trade work get paid a decent amount. They don't get paid "a shit load" but it's roughly equivalent to teaching salary in the US. Welders get paid more usually because their training is more difficult and underwater welders can get even more because of hazard pay.

You're right, but it's more about how we percieve blue collar work as a society -we have this idea that anyone can do it, so it must be less valuable. In reality, almost anyone can do almost anything with enough effort

As far as pay, I'm not an expert, but the problem with blue collar work is generally that you need to work for a long time, often well into your 30's, to become a master at your profession and really start making money; a college graduate can (in theory) get a 60,000/yr job straight out of the university while still in their 20's, and only advance upwards from there. Blue collar work has a clear plateau, unless you start your own business.

However, with the advent of everyone, their dog, and their dog's "Native American" son getting into college, it's rapidly becoming just another requirement to get any kind of job at all. Soon an Associate's will be your GED/High School Diploma, and all those magical 60/k annual starting jobs will be reserved for Master's degrees and up.

Yeah. If you don't go to university and start working as an auto mechanic out of trade school, your lifetime earnings will actually surpass most university students.
>>
>>90523516
>hard work for not much pay, little respect from your peers, probably no formal education so you probably talk like a dumbass.

Wew lad. I know you personally support the idea of not treating blue collar work like shit, but I know so many college-aged people that think this way. Most of the blue collar workers I know pull in more income than any of the recently-graduated college students. It sounds like people got sold hard on the "college means you're intelligent" meme, especially considering some really think university education it what prevent people from talking like idiots.

The truth of the matter is that a majority of the people that go to college are on extended high school tier learning and are just as mediocre in intellect as your average blue collar worker, albeit with lower immediate income and typically a superiority complex regarding manual labor.

By "blue collar," I mean manual skilled trades, not flipping patties or ringing up grocery store items.

I've attended university for engineering, and while it's a fine field, I regret not getting into blue collar labor myself. I just don't have a passion for the field I'm in, and when you're doing something mentally taxing AND not very enjoyable, the dissatisfaction is twofold. All of my friends that graduated with me make more money than I'm expected to earn for a year or two after graduation; when I get my diploma, they'll already have $100,000 in the bank from choosing to bust ass as mechanics and run through internal promotions. Guess which I'd prefer.

it takes this man Hank Hill, who just wants to live in this little bubble of familiarity and comfort, and constantly throws him into situations he wants nothing to do with. >>90523516
I am german, but the same applies here. Blue collar work is looked down upon and everyone HAS to go to university. HURR DURR WE NEED MORE ACADEMICS. And to achieve that, our government simply lowers the standards. Today the people starting university can write their name and that's probably all. I have held lab courses with people doing their master's and I could put my brother, who is not a man of science AT ALL in one of those lab courses and he would fare better than these people. Simultaneously, tradesmen are getting rarer, although being a handyman pays really well since after the diy fad ended a few years ago, people are either too lazy or inept to do anything by themselves.
I started university almost ten years ago and that was a completely different time. And if I could choose again, I would probably learn a trade.

Actual tradesmen aren't the same thing as blue collar laborers in a factory or some shit. If all you're good for is manual labor, you're considered "unskilled", and you're going to be replaced as soon as your employer finds someone younger and more fit than you. A lot of factories and shit are becoming mostly automated anyways. You're right about welders and plumbers, because we're probably never going to reach the point where a robot can reliably fix the shit that makes your house function. That sort of thing requires an intelligent human being. And you're right about the shortage of tradesmen, because the current generation of them is getting old and starting to retire, and there aren't very many people considering the possibility of stepping up to take their places because they fell for the college meme.
