>Superhero can easily beat his entire Rogue's gallery at once
Why even HAVE supervillains if they're no harder to beat than regular criminals?
a proper supervillain should be a serious challenge for a hero
2 physical supervillains teamed up should give the hero one HELL of a fight, and two genius types teamed up should make a whoel arc's worth of trouble
supervillains are not crowd-fillers for brawls

What? No, LEGO (Batman?) movie was fine because it was a parody. its silly on purpose as a joke.
I'm talking about more serious superhero media.
>>
Any "challenge" is purely in your mind. The hero is going to win regardless.
>>
>>90491308
well duh, none of this is ACTUALLY real
>>
The joke where characters are sneaking around and one of them signals the other(s) by doing motions with their hands that look over the top
Then the other character(s) just looks at them with confusion
Then they decide to just do things the simple way

its one of the most used not funny jokes in animation, I see it in almost everything and its never funny, it just pads time

Oh look. This thread again. Welp, let's get 'em out of the way now...

>jocks are dumb violent bullies
>"BUT IF YOU KILL HIM THEN YOU'LL BE NO BETTER THAN HIM!!"
>guy tries to be in multiple places at once

>elemental character makes puns based on their element
>the fire and ice duo are always locking horns
>boys vs girls episode
>everyone in the city either LOVES the hero or they all HATE the hero; only one person in the entire city has the opposite opinion
>>
>Hero's about to deliver the final blow
>Some idiot stops him with a 'Kill the villain and you'll be as worse as him' speech
>>
>character gets increasingly exhausted from sleep deprivation
>they eventually pass out from sheer exhaustion
>they wake up a few minutes later and are completely well rested for the rest of the episode
>>
>>90491186
>Inverse Ninja Rule
Yeah, that one is really funny.
Also when they are chivalrous enough, to attack the hero one by one instead of doing a wombo combo.
>>
>>90491308
Well, you say that...
>>
>>90491186

I'm pretty sure the "hero beats the whole rogues gallery" trope plays more on the fact that the villains are inherently selfish and self-centered, and thus are shit at teamwork, getting in each other's way and what-not.
>>
>joke/weak character gets the girl
Worst shit
>>
>slapstick heavy show
>any female characters are mostly, if not entirely exempt from slapstick
>>
>>90491186
This is why I couldn't take Batman: The Brave and The Bold seriously. I tuned in to a random episode and not only were the Phantom Stranger and the Spectre arguing over who got to suck Bat's dick, but he effortlessly soloed his entire rogue's gallery when they were all in one room to gang up on him. Where is there to go from there? He's invincible. Story over.
>>
>>90491806
I can't tell if this is ironic or if you really watched Chill of the Night and thought the villain fights were the important part
>>
>>90491186
The mere existence of leaders.
A group must always have a leader, even if that title is informal, because it merely indicates that he is the main character.
It also means that the smart guy or the strong guy can never be leaders, even if it is apparent that they are better suited at this job.

Also no matter how large the group is, be it 5 or 15, there is always one girl who almost always doubles up as the MC's love interst. Recent developments increased the girl ratio as 2 per group, but my fucking /u/ folder won't fill up alone on itself.
>>
>Characters argue, oblivious to a background event that solves the problem.

Unless the background event is REALLY funny, it just serves to pad out time and listening to arguments is rarely fun or interesting.
>>
>>90491891
>A group must always have a leader, even if that title is informal, because it merely indicates that he is the main character.
Sokka isn't the main character.
Hes the leader and comedic relief, while only being a secondary protagonist.
>>

>Other character is mad at them for not believing everything they say
>This is presented as a problem of trust rather than a problem of ignoring evidence
>>
>>90492002
>sokkafags
Ugh
>>
>>90491886
Yeah yeah, Bats finds the guy who killed his parents, very deep, yadda yadda. More important was the fact that he was somehow the most important person on the face of the planet to two immortals and was shown to be able to take his entire rogue's gallery out at once with about as much effort as I need to toss a wrapper into the trash can. When the protag is that much more powerful than his rogues I lose interest. There's no drama when he is utterly unstoppable unless it's all in fun, and the episode was deadly serious.

The worst part of this was that IIRC, Superman had just thwarted Zod's plans by sending his terraform devices to the Phantom Zone. The writers could have easily contrived it so that Superman threw Zod into a portal to the Phantom Zone instead of offing him, but no, let's kill off the most sympathetic movie villain of all time.

>Let's not get carried away
Honestly, I can't find a flaw with Zod as he is portrayed in Man of Steel. He was from a caste of warriors; bred and raised to protect Krypton and its people, and that is what he did to the best of his ability without regard for himself or anyone around him. He was an entire race's survival instinct distilled down into one man, and his race was in mortal peril, so can you blame him for acting the villain? Can you blame him for going to extreme lengths?

Imo Zod is the most sympathetic because his background and simplistic personality leave no room for questioning his morals; he is less a man than he is a force of nature, and so we are sympathetic both to his struggles to save his people and to his status as a tool to his people.

You have other sympathetic villains, like Dr. Freeze, but you can question their methods. Yeah he loves his wife, but is he going to save her at the expense of innocent people? What if he causes the untimely demise of another man's wife? Is he blind to the irony of such a situation?

In Xmen Evolution it was something that definitely annoyed me. Avalanche did try to join the Xmen and do right, if not for slightly selfish reasons. Sure, he goofed around a bit during training but for the most part did his best (Scott getting annoyed at him destroying the entire target area with his powers, even though his powers are specifically designed for leveling large areas).

He was blamed THRICE for wrecking the various vehicles, despite having nothing to do with the first 2 and actually trying to stop the 3rd wreck (and stop the newbies from crashing and dying). Scott blames Lance YET again and gives a half assed apology to make up for that and the shit they put him through during training. He leaves as a neutral party, but is understandably pissed. Makes sense why Boom Boom left too, Scott and Jean were bigger hard asses than Logan and Ororo in that AU.

What I would do for one of these episodes is have it be one chick who tries to get the rest of her friends to play a game none of them have ever played, and instead of sides getting angry at each other, the dudes start to realize that none of the girls know how to play, so they stop halfway through and use it as an opportunity to teach them how. The antagonistic chick leaves halfway through and everyone else has a good time with the game.

Well it was an explicit threat rather than just an ideological thing. There's a world of difference between a villain who thinks everyone needs to die so he can remake society perfectly and a villain that thinks everyone needs to die because an alien chicken species has threatened to blow up the planet unless all chicken eaters are killed

I think part of this is that half the time the villains don't really co-operate. They're villains, and tend to be selfish or evil in nature, so any team ups tend to be more about a plan that each has simply worked half on, and not one plan that they've all worked together on.

I hate it when a cartoon/comic includes or brings up a trope specifically to make a big show about how stupid and awful it is and how all the sane characters hate it and think it can't and shouldn't happen. It pretty much always ends up with a strawman that makes far less sense than a serious use of the trope would, forcing all of its supporters to be generically stupid and say/do/think stupid things for no reason, and inadequately explains why it would even happen (or be expected) in the supposedly "smart" world if it's such a stupid and nonsensical idea.

For example, they might have a character who is randomly declared "The Chosen One" by a group of idiotic cultists for stupid reasons, who expect him to be great and awesome and defeat the bad guy, and of couse he fails miserably to make room for the real protagonists because ha ha there's no such thing as a chosen one and prophecies are stupid. But if they're so stupid, why would there even be a cult? If prophecies don't mean anything, why do those idiots have them at all, and why is there some random guy who happens to fit it so well (minus the "actually competent in any way that matters" part)? And why does everyone (apart from the long-suffering Few Sane Characters) believe them so strongly? When a work tries to seriously have "The Chosen One" in it, usually there's a reason for that to actually mean something.

On a related note, it's annoying when someone has non-specific "stupidity" as a character trait. It's one thing if they have character flaws or biases, but it's quite another if they just do something stupid things because they're stupid people and it's something a stupid person would do. I know that's "the joke", but it's usually the kind of joke where a person wants to make a point but calls it a joke to avoid admitting that their point doesn't make sense; it's not even much of a joke, because it's been pretty much done to death.

You know, I found that scene, and I think it serves as an excellent example of why I loved this version of General Zod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcEH-Itx73A
>Jor'El: You're talking about genocide.
>Zod: Yes, and I'm arguing its merits with a ghost.
Jor'El practically whispers genocide, he says it with such weight. Zod, on the other hand, completely dismisses the idea as if it were nothing, instead staying grounded and reminding himself that he's discussing things with a projection of a dead man.

In my mind, Zod is this ultra-practical dude who mentally struggles to keep his focus on one thing and one thing only: protecting the people of Krypton. It's more practical to genocide humans than to take even the smallest risk in having Kryptonians adjust to the planet. The cost to humans isn't even considered because it's not part of his "programming".

Continuing the scene, you see Zod studiously ignoring Jor'El, commanding the computer to prepare for deletion. Zod talks over Jor'El, doesn't even look at him until:
>Jor'El: My son is twice the man you are.
Zod's ears perk up, he looks over his shoulder, like "the fuck you say, nigger?"
>Jor'El: We will finish what we started. I can promise you that.
Zod turns around, he steps over
Zod glares at Jor'El, he prepares to speak
>Zod: (paraphrasing) Imma fuk u up
Without waiting for a response, Zod deletes Jor'El. Whereas at the beginning of the scene Zod seems like some implacable genocide robot, the end of the scene shows he is "human" after all, and that he isn't immune to insults. He is capable of anger and frustration, yet none of that was present when he was discussing genocide. Zod isn't evil, he's just frighteningly effective at his job.

>Why do people believe in star signs? Or hand reading? Or all that other esoteric garbage?
Right, but in the context of a comic or cartoon, how is the viewer supposed to know which occult practices make sense in the fantasy world and which ones don't?

4 times out of 5, the writers put on their pork-gloves and create a strawman cult that actually makes sense in their fictional world. e.g.
>Main character pulls ancient sword from stone as foretold by prophecy
>31 episodes later, the MC's sidekick is recognized by some cult as a hero, and the viewer is supposed to believe that the sidekick is gullible and naive for believing in the cult prophecy
I can't recall any specific examples, but I swear I've seen this before. The trope is really almost insulting, like, "Haha stupid sidekick, you thought you could have REAL powers like me??"

Actually, (and maybe this isn't quite the same thing) I've seen the sidekick get offered powers by the badguy several times, but it's the same schtick: "What? My sidekick is advancing the plot? How preposterous! Back to comedic relief with you, Tonto!"

Spoilers for Great Wall

The Taotei are zerg rushing fuckers that came from a meteor and are basically hiveminded by their queen. If they lose their connection to the queen, they just stop moving completely, which happens when exposed to magnets. When the queen is killed, it's straight up Phantom Menace and the entire taotei swarm just stops dead

A kinda shit movie, but most of the action sequences are fun enough

>Badguy, poorly disguised: "Sucks to suck, eh kid? Gee willickers, I just so happen to have a way for you to not-suck right here in my pocket, and I will provide it to you out of the goodness of my heart"
>Sidekick: That sounds sketchy af, I'll take it!

What exactly is an annoying younger sibling who always gets their way a foil to?

Batman/Superman are foils because they're both heroic but go about crime fighting in opposite ways.

The only thing the annoying little sister can do is be an antagonist, except because their family always takes their side, it means that they'll always win regardless of whether or not they deserved to get shat on for being fucking assholes.

Like did anyone really get pissed off that DW got hit for breaking Arthur's plane, or when Ed finally told Sarah off (albeit with a pebble in his shoe, but still)?

No, because they're responsible for so much bullshit that it's gratifying to finally see them be punished for something, but of course the show then makes the fact that they got punished seem terrible and they end up learning nothing from their experience and go back to being shitters for the rest of the series.

Nevermind, that was me misusing the term "foil" as a synonym for "antagonist".
>it means that they'll always win regardless of whether or not they deserved to get shat on for being fucking assholes.
Well yeah. I'm not seeing the issue here, an antagonist who always wins unfairly is fine.

Fiction isn't just supposed to be something where you insert as the protagonist and therefor want to see the protagonist being rewarded and antagonists punished.

I can understand why you'd take issue with their "comeuppance" being portrayed negatively though, might aswell not do a comeuppance at all in a status quo show.
>>
>>90496753
I know this has happened, but what are some examples?
>>
>>90496808
See: The Loud House and Gravity Falls
>>
>>90545121
>Well yeah. I'm not seeing the issue here, an antagonist who always wins unfairly is fine.
An antagonist who always wins is just as shitty as a protagonist who always loses, and vice-versa.

Also, even if you're writing for an antagonistic character, the bare minimum requirement that they should be is entertaining.

Kevin for example is a good foil to the ed boys because he's strong enough, fast enough, and smart enough to deal with them whenever they pull off their scams. At the same time though, Kevin can also work with the ed boys every so often (like in that episode where they're "in the big city" and kevin is engaging in small talk while getting a tattoo or when him and Eddy are throwing a baseball against Ed's head when Ed got a pebble in his shoe) and there are even episodes where Kevin failsand the Ed boys succeeded.

With Sarah though, in every appearance that she's an antagonist, the ed boys will always lose because either she she kicked the shit outta them.
