Depends on the writer and in what series. Kryptonians in one continuity used to be warlike in the past and used the fact that they were super powered in yellow star systems towards that end, hence General Zod's military career before becoming a traitor. There are also a few older story arcs in Superman about some alien race sending their forces to Earth just to kill Superman. This is because they heard of a Kryptonian survivor being on Earth and they wanted to wipe out the last one because they had a really bad history with them. Most aliens are pretty similar to humans in terms of strength and speed so have to rely on extremely advanced tech to compete with Kryptonians and Martians.
