Act 6 was where most characters got derailed. Hussie tried to find ways to pad out their arcs or just abandoned them outright. Cascade ended as a fine end to pretty much everyone's characters, then suddenly NEW ISSUES had to come forth for no real fucking reason, leading to the abortion that was Vriskagram.

Act 6 Gamzee is a really weird character.

A lot of the characters (Karkat, Rose, Kanaya, etc) who started sucking in Act 6 did so because it was clear Hussie didn't know what do with them so he put them on the backburner or filled their live with meaningless bullshit so they'd have something to do (see: Rose's alcoholism). But this doesn't apply to Gamzee.

Gamzee gets a lot of shit 2 do. He interacts with Act 6 kids, he romances Terezi, he serves Lord English, and he raises Caliborn. An yet despite all of that he rarely comes off as a character. He doesn't have many meaningful conversations, and he mostly says Honk over and over again. Sure Gamzee was always a laidback dude, but here he behaves more like a lobotomy victim. He acts less like a character, and more like a "floppy, foul-smelling plot device".

The only time we get any insight into his mind is during Openbound. And that only brings up more questions. Questions that the comic has no interest in answering or even exploring.

That's not even going into his relationship(?) with Tavros and his Moirallegiance Karkat. The former is completely forgotten about, and the Gamzee seems largely uninterested in the latter. We're told he and Karkat had been having conversation on their 3-year meteor ride but nothing comes of it.

And then the Retcon happens and Gamzee becomes an utter joke. Finally, he's shoved into a fridge and forgotten by everyone. Even by his "best friend" Karkat.

It's such a disappointing end for such an odd character.

Props to anyone who bothered to read all of this text. Any thoughts on what went wrong?

I think what went wrong with Gamzee was that he no longer was solely intended as the sinister joke character he was in Act 5 and instead his entire being surrendered into the Lord English collection. The inevitability of LE and the nature of Gamzee's inability to die removes any negativity he might have towards certain situations, to the point where he's wholly passive to a robotic degree. He flounces his way through the Alpha kids' story, piddling wares and otherwise being something of a pest to coincide with Caliborn's outright trolling. It's through this that Caliborn also facilitates the creation of another one of his shards, combining Equius' corpse with the fragment of Dirk localized in AR.

Act 6 killed a lot of characters and their arc/potentials but for Gamzee his purpose was only to be one of the many pieces of Lord English and was enacted as the vehicle for him. Gamzee. His Moirallegiance with Karkat was not important because Gamzee was likely planned to kill Karkat at some point in the future. Its importance floundered even more after Game Over because it removed what was important in the first place. I think there was supposed to be a point where Gamzee kills Karkat in some ultimate betrayal (the Judas to his Jesus) and that moment clearly was Game Over.

It makes me suspect that maybe Act 7 had parts that were supposed to be different before Game Over. Maybe both Vriska and Karkat were supposed to remain dead, and maybe Karkat's intention to face LE head on at the start of Act 7 was actually supposed to mean something. If Karkat were a ghost, the Alpha Timeline ghost, and was subjected to a Double Death then his actions would have inspired the ghost army to attack without impunity, almost neatly tying into the 'sacrificial martyr' destiny the Signless represented.

All of it was probably aborted because the fandom loved Karkat too much.

In the case of Homestuck there's a lesson in there: never try for both. Stick to your own creative integrity or cave and pander to what your audience wants fully.

You can tell Hussie was still trying to balance factors of the story he planned out ages ago but the Retcon allowed him to change more and 'fix' what had been done. Characters like Karkat and even Kanaya must have had some greater purpose in their deaths; their dubious absence in Vriskagram feels purposeful in suggesting it.

Credits seems to further the idea that Kanaya wasn't actually needed at all to repopulate the Troll race. They all did pretty much abandon their Ectobiology offspring once they were created and fucked off into the future they all could enjoy.

Maybe it would have meant something if the Trolls did all die out after Game Over and the race ends up being resurrected by the merciful Beta kids anyway.

He was all excited and wrote up the game script and was gonna hop into the finale then it got pushed back by The Odd Gentlemen, his dad dying, whenever he updated having to deal with his shitty fanbase (caucasian, the anime lord english joke where he had to go out and apologize and make sure people knew he wasn't making fun of the terrible anime lord english he got from deviantart, etc.)

I'd say I feel sorry for him but the cocksucker constantly promised and never delivered. Act 7 was half assed because he wanted to wash his hands of it. The ending didn't fit where the comic currently was at all.
