Now that the pawpsicles have melted, did you enjoy this AWARD WINNING film of last year /co/?

>I enjoyed it but Kubo deserved the award and you know it.

Kubo's gorgeous. The technical artistry can't be denied. But it's not a great story and the pacing's pretty bad. They need to get a script to match what they can do with stop motion.
>>
>>90449369

Kubo's animation was stunning (as is to be expected by Laika), but story-wise it fell really flat. Pretty much no time at all was spent on world-building and the plot moved too quickly, putting too much emphasis on getting characters from Points A-Z and not enough emphasis on character development. By far the weakest Laika film, IMO. Zootopia deserved the award more.
>>
I enjoyed every bit of it. Judy and Nick just worked so well together and are just so adorbs.
>>
I really do hope we get some traditionally animated Zootopia content at some point in the future.

this movie was perfectly: unique design of animals, worldbuilding, colorful, varied, likeable cast, good message.

it set new bar for cartoons with talking animals, no more furry heads on human bodies, that's lazy! and always explain why they are so smart so they act like people; technology, magic, evolution. doesn't matter.

it needs lore!
>>
>>90451005
*was done perfectly.
>>
It was OK. Nothing special. Decent characters, but I actually found the world to be extremely mundane, especially for a Disney film.

This. What really ruined the movie for me was the eh script and the bad pacing. The animation was wonderful, but at the same time Zootopia had some good stuff with animation, along with a decent plot
>>
>>90451005
>it set new bar for cartoons with talking animals, no more furry heads on human bodies, that's lazy!

The differences in size between species is the biggest thing that stands out to me now while watching lesser known animal films like Cat Shit One, it had rabbits practically as tall as the camels.

Interestingly, Disney tends to get it right most of the time.

Eh, it's much better than Frozen, but that's easy to see if you're not a gullible idiot buying into marketing and hype.

Although I'm still salty because they canned the much darker "shock collar" theme in favor of the cookie cutter 100% family friendly yet dull story.

But that's something to expect from Disney.

it wasn't canned because it was dark: Hunchback of Notre Dame was dark, Black Cauldron was dark.

it was canned because the allegory was clear as a day: preds = oppressed minority. prey = evil white people.

it was good idea for anime, or KINO. but not a movie

WreckItRalph was originally going to be about Jumpman ripoff, they found out Donkey Kong was more interesting, same here.

I think Kubo deserved the Oscar just on the sheer artistry involved but if we're gonna have to give it to a Disney movie Zootopia was way better than Moana.

Hmm, all original movie with an interesting commentary, good performances, and consistent quality beginning to end?

>he doesn't know about horse anuses

The horse anus is a marvel of evolutionary biology.

Like most mammals, rhythmic contractions of the bowels move the feces up to the end of the gut to be expelled.

What sets the horse anus apart is the bafflingly complex autonomic contractive motion of 4 muscular rings which function like sphinctoral guillotine. As the feces is squeezed out, the rings expand and the outermost ring is retracted into an interior skinfold resembling the human foreskin, leaving an interstital tissue fold to open air.

The two inner rings then contract, and push apart, severing the horse feces cleanly, allowing to drop free as the outer ring folds back through the interstital flap, creating a intrinsic wiping motion with the fourth ring as it contracts back into the horses rectum.

This advanced biological mechanism is so effective that many industrial companies have copied Nature's design for self-cleaning viscus liquid dispensers housed within complex machinery.

The world building is a lot better than I expected, but how far does it really go before it falls apart?

What kind of food do the predator animals eat if they live alongside their natural prey in this multi species civilization? How are they able to sustain their mass and strength and not devolve into weaker and smaller beings over generations?

Where does zootopia get its energy source? Food supply? Materials and manufacturing? It looks like its in the middle of nowhere and there is a distinct lack of industrial scenery

Why are all these animals cohabitating from wildly different origins in one big city when they would be much better off in environments suited to them?

How/where do they dispose of trash?

> what kind of food do the predator animals eat
Fish and bugs alongside with some plants

> where does Zootopia get its energy source
Powerplants outside the city, or geothermal energy from beneath the city. The surrounding landscape of Zootopia somewhat resembles a caldera, thus the city could stand on an inactive vulcano

> why are all these animals cohabitating
Cause Zootopia is the place where all the animals are supposed to live together, hence the district, to accomodate different types. In other cities, there may be less diversity, as we´ve seen in Bunnyburrow.

>where do they dispose of trash
I´d say in dumps or recycling facilities. We´ve seen a lot of trashcans, thus they have some type of trash collecting system active. The trash is then handled outside the city, just like in RL.

The short version is that the original concept was much darker. Preds had to wear shock collars that zapped them if their pulse rate got too high, meaning they couldn't even get excited without being zapped. They were also second class citizens treated like absolute dirt by the herbivores (who had all the power and money). Nick was the protagonist in this version and was cynical city citizen. One of the last changes to be made was swapping Judy in as the protag to have a more optimistic view of the city.
>>
>>90455989
>>90455099
To further clarify.,
The Zootopia team had been pushing for the collars idea since the start and had spent years working it that way, but couldn't get it to fit. Pixar pretty much told them "That idea is shit" in the interviews you get the idea that the Zootopia team really liked the collars idea, but also knew that they were just wasting everyones time and money by trying to get it to work.

Yo. Though I haven't been there in a month.

>>90459625
Not him, but the trash threads have way more porn and way more attention given to content creation, and since its been a year, people are willing to open up to exploring the world rather than just the canon events of the movie, which means interest in AUs and OCs and other stuff. They also just have a lot of people who want to learn to write or draw, so they place an emphasis on making stuff and helping people make stuff.
Its not everyone's bag but its kind of cool seeing someone go from a shitty artist or writer to an ok artist or writer just because a movie inspired them.

>Where does zootopia get its energy source? Food supply? Materials and manufacturing? It looks like its in the middle of nowhere and there is a distinct lack of industrial scenery
Did you see the outdoor climate control. Their energy supply is cheap and powerful like nothing in reality. Large scale polywell fusion might do it, but tokamaks probably wound't. Whatever the case, that kind of energy economy makes a lot of logistical difficulties just go away. They could run all their trash through a plasma incinerator, run the result through a mass spectrometer, and have ready-made purified raw materials for the relatively clean manufacturing stages of industry. They could import food from halfway around the world and ship sewage back for fertilizer, or they could grow everything indoors under lamps. Such a civilization can build a city pretty much wherever it wants, even for what is apparently a political/social experiment/showpiece like Zootopia.
>>
>>90461029

If the city is over a caldera they could be swimming in geothermal power.
>>
>>90459074
Presumably to avoid the ethical implications. Things can get really messy if you apply human-like standards to other creatures. How do you think a society of small, short-lived r-strategists would look? How would it coexist with mammals with anything like social equality? Also, you know, the availability of non-sapient food for carnivores.
>>
>>90461193
All the operating geothermal plants in the entire real world would not suffice to power Zootopia's climate control, and it would suck the heat out of a city-sized caldera pretty fast. We're talking terawatts here, which is energy consumption on a scale only a few major countries reach in the real world.

Kinda wish they'd do more in the setting, but with completely different characters so that if it's shit it doesn't sully the originals retroactively

While they're at it, they can parody buddy cop movies with a Fox and Rabbit. They can make a quick comment about how Nick and Judy opened the door and set the example for others, but then go on to say that reality doesn't match the lofty example they originally set, and there's still a lot of work to be done (or words to that effect).
>>

I liked that freemium game, they hint interspecies relationships here and there. There was some cute lady otter who was hitting on Nick.

I would love to see a short similar to Frozen Fever and Tangled Ever After. They could use it to promote toys and we could see more of the city. Win-Win.
