good job making the new thread, I know a few people wanted to keep posting in here
>Activity
that's a tough one since some of my earliest are actually better than some of the later ones a few months in.
>>
I do not use a personal web site, but publish on webtoon, tapastic and tumblr.
I'm doing it wrong?
I have already small amount of views, on a personal website I think I would have about 0 view.
>>
>>90449624
Using a webcomic host site like Tapastic is fine, despite what some people say. They're useful for building up your fanbase without having to invest any cash into a personal site. I used to only use Tapastic and Webtoons to host my comic, and even though I have my own site set up now, I still have a lot of readers from webtoons/tapastic

using a hosting service like tapastic or whichever other comic hosting sites are out there + social media like tumblr and twitter is fine and actually preferable. if you want to add a bit more personality to your project then get a domain name. they are like $10 a YEAR and you get your own dot com.

just make sure you read the TOS for the hosting sites so you don't accidentally give away ownership of your shit to someone and have to pay royalties to them.

i think the only big issue to worry about is when you start to get too much traffic (unlikely, no one ever gets too much traffic), and the site decides to cut you loose.

No major language errors that I can see on this page. Speech balloons could do with some adjustment though.

Panel 2
Balloon 1: Remove the blank line under "HOLY SHIT!"
Balloon 2: Centre align text, move the line break to "We're || a real band". Balloon could be a little smaller.
Both balloons could be repositioned slightly, as they're forming tangents with the hair, and the border of panel 1.
For the introduction captions, I'd put the name on it's own line, then the job roles underneath, with spaces around each dash.

Panel 3:
Balloon 1: Centre align text, move it so it's not making a tangent with the panel border. Capital T in "YouTube".
Balloon 2: Centre align text, make it a little larger, as the S in So is right up against the edge.

Panel 4: Make the balloon a little bigger, and move the tail to 9 or 10 o'clock, and point it towards Ophelie's face (at the moment it's pointing at her tits).

Panel 1: "Go set up the gear and merch, and do a sound check! NOW!"

Panel 2: the balloons as they are read in the wrong order; top right reads before bottom left.
Balloon 1: "I also want || a tight setlist!"
Both balloons are making tangents on the panel borders.

Panel 3: Nudge the text up a bit, so "This" isn't so close to the edge. Tangent on the border to panel 1.

Panel 4:
Balloon 1: Text could do with repositioning.
Balloon 2: "I feel her pain."

Panel 5: "By the way, what the fuck..."

Panel 5: You could split Harry's dialogue in two:
Top right: "Well, could you, perhaps..."
Bottom right: "... Play the drums tonight?"
That would fill in the big gap at the top of the panel, and introduce a hesitant pause.

Panel 6: Similarly with Marie.
Balloon 1: "... OK."
Balloon 2: "Only if you make me || an official member || of the band."

>>90455294
Page 5

Panel 1, balloon 2: Capital T in "Then".

Panel 3
Balloon 1: "It's been || the same shit || for months!"
Balloon 2: "I even helped on the recording for the EP. || I composed the drum parts, || and played over that || smegma stained shitbag!"

Panel 5:
"So now, if you try to tell me that I can't be in your fucking band because, according to you, a woman is physically incapable of achieving brutality, go fuck yourse--"

Panel 6:
Balloon 1: reorganise the line breaks, starting with "As co-founder || of Gloryhol..."
Balloon 2: "So yeah. || Welcome to Gloryhol, || Marie de Darthes."

Go to /ic/ and they'll teach you how to draw. Read the sticky and practice using the resources the sticky provides, mainly the books. Then worry about comics when you can actually draw

If you're showing panty shots and overt sexuality like that then you've gone a little past "for all ages". You can make her get turned on, just be subtle about it, like maybe make her act more catty when she gets turned on or make subtle sexual jokes.

Actually, just spotted on Page 6
Panel 3, balloon 1: missing tail.
Panel 4, balloon 1: line break "everything, but || it's a start..."

>>90455403
Page 7

Panel 4: "Set this stage on fire".

Panel 5, balloon 2: "We're gonna destroy this venue!"
Straight tails would suit the dialogue better; see below.

Page 8:
No changes.

Most of the issues I can see with the lettering are with the positioning of the balloons, tails, and text within them.

The balloons are all perfect ovals, but the text within them often doesn't fit the shape well. Text should be centred, not left-aligned. Controlling where the line breaks go will help, but you also need to be aware of how each line will read.
If you make the balloons with 4 control points and adjust their positions and handles, you can customise the shapes to fit the text better, instead of trying to force a block of square text into a round balloon.

Make sure the text is centred properly within the balloon, so it isn't too close to one side or touching the edges. A customised balloon shape helps here, over a perfect oval.

Watch the positions of the balloons, so they aren't forming tangents with panel borders and elements within the panels.
Vertical positioning trumps horizontal, so a balloon in the top right will read before one in the bottom left.

Tails should point to people's faces.
A single straight tail has more energy/is more immediate than a curved one.
Ideally, they should emerge as if they were drawn with a straight line starting at the centre of the balloon. So, perpendicular to the balloon edge.
Again, watch the positioning for tangents.

Plan the lettering at the layout stage; don't try to force it to fit in whatever gaps you've left. That way it's not covering important art elements; you also don't need to draw anything in areas that will be covered by a balloon.

Don't skimp on or rush the lettering; be just as fastidious with it as with your artwork.

>>90456674

why? its just low tier weeb shit and its not even drawn well, the faces look like shit and the anatomy is garbage. the robot also looks like flat hot trash.

the person was obviously trying to draw manga but failed and he didn't post on /a/ where that page belongs because everyone on /a/ would of made fun of him for how bad the art looks

so he posted it here thinking the worst looking failed anime attempts would look better than any random american webcomic/cartoon artist stuff on any given day

but he was wrong, it looks like shit

>>90456574

Noice train and mountains, you're pretty good at drawing scenery and props so far. Your character art could use a lot of work, though. Your poses are very stiff, adn there are times when the dude's anatomy looks kinda wonky. Do some figure drawings and anatomy study, they could really help you.
Don't worry about making it for now, you're still learning. Just try to have fun and improve your art.

I like this so far. You do have some errors. I don't know what you see you have to fix. You may have something in mind. But here is my 2 cents.

Your perspective on the chair is screwing up the anatomy of the guy sitting in it. Look at his knees. Fucker needs to man spread the fuck out.

Also note the shoulders. He's resting, I don't know how tired he is in this scene, but the shoulders could droop down a bit more. It looks like you were keeping the shoulder line with some form of perspective, but it came out stiff.

I'm no pro, thats just what I see.

Actually, I learned most of my anatomy from copying Spiderman and just drawing from life. I like both American stuff and the manga. I really don't care where comics come from as long as I can read it and it has good art and a good story. Ironically, I used to think that backgrounds and perspective were where I shit and I was good at characters, so I forced myself to put my make all my digital drawings have a fully realized background. One year later, I've realized that humans are much harder than backgrounds, so I've been grinding anatomy for the past 3 months. I've decided to at least start the comic so that I won't fall into the rut of saying "When I'm good I'll eventually do it, but first I gotta practice this."
I'm still practicing on the side, but not as much anymore.

Okay, hope you don't mind me vandalizing your art.
First thing is that you seem to be going for a cool color scheme, but you're using a pretty yellow-ish green, albeit a dark shade of it. Trade that in for a bluer green, as that may better fit.
A purple might do well for your trees, as I assume they're actually supposed to be brown, and in low light browns can take on a purplish tint. Similar with rocks, take whatever color they would be in normal light, and make it into a cooler hue. The stream looks fine imho. Hope this helps.
>>
>>90457727
Ahh, stiffness. Yeah, I've noticed my drawings are bit stiff and the poses come out weird. I think it might be because I don't have a clear enough library of poses in my head to kinda wing it. If you can't get a good reference, then think of the body in spheres and cylinders. Then use a perspective grid to place....I can't describe it with words. Loomis has a good few pages of lining a body up with perspective.

Hey guys I just came out of a freak out I had on /r9k/ and I'm feeling very lost. How do you handle jealousy over other comic artists?
>>
>>90466356
it sounds a little hippy-dippy but it helps if you realize the delineations between people are pretty arbitrary. i wouldnt go as far as to quote i am the walrus, but basically anyone could be you, and you could be anyone. don't let the you you happen to be distract you from that, you'll never be someone-enough to be happy. Just be happy for them, knowing they get to be that person and enjoy that. You've got yours too, plenty of people envy you.

the only thing that frustrates me is seeing art that i couldnt possibly learn the FIRST THING about mimicking, but then you just have to remember that every step is a step, with a step before it and a step after, and you can't skip it but you still know it's there.
>>
>>90466356
Competition. I decide to fuck up their shit. Even if I don't /really/ win anything I usually get some rage art out of it.

Do what writers do- Simply shit out all our ideas on the page and don't worry about technique when making the first rough draft. Then just heavily analyze and trim what you don't need and add what you don't need to make a second draft. If it still doesn't quite work, repeat the process until you've refined the comic pages to what you want

>>90467537
decompression is how people describe modern comics and the way they take a lot longer to tell the same stories.. for example if you picked up a spider-man comic in the 60s, it told a whole saturday morning cartoon's worth of adventure in a few pages, with the lizard defeated at the end... whereas in the 90s that comic was part 16 of 22 and you basically saw peter talking to 2 or 3 people in-depth about their opinion of what it meant that he's now a clone or something.

>>90467898
Yeah. I'm currently laying out the basic building blocks for the script and realizing that I want to move a lot slower than 22 pages will allow. I think that a part of the struggle is that I'm coming from screenwriting - I'm most comfortable writing for one "lens," if you will. But with comics, there are multiple "lenses" on one page, which I'm trying to wrap my head around.

>>
This actually brings up a good topic. How do you guys feel about making characters with different languages? For example >>90468461 is using a lot of Norwegian, but I've never even thought of creating a character that doesn't speak English. Do you think it's a good or bad idea to create a from a completely different country/culture?

>>
>>90468945
Depends on if you get a decent resource for checking accuracy in speech/cultural practices and how you use the character in the story itself. If the majority of your characters speak English, can they also speak English? Do they otherwise have a translator to and from English? Would their lack of ability to communicate hamper the story? Are the communication issues just used as a gag, or do you focus on the feeling of alienation, or do they just not care about it?
>>
>>90468945
the only wrong way to do it is the cliche of peppering your language with words from your native tongue. Nobody does this the way they do in cartoons where it's the words they probably learned in english first
no, indeed, the people who randomly substitute easily-learned words are the ones studying THAT language, not the one that comprises the other 95% of their speech
however, immigints swearing in their mother tongue or using hard to translate figures of speech, absolutely.

>>90469083
Well that's the part I get irritated with a lot of tumblr comics is that a lot if times they sprinkle the language where it's rediculous and use culture as some special prop when they know very little about that culture. Then again, I'm afraid of being diverse because I don't want people to think I'm "culturally appropriating" or anything like that. I dunno. For example, this kid is using this language as a gag, do you think that's wrong or? It just rubs me wrong when people do that but what's your opinion?
>>
>>90469521
Which comics are you talking about?

And I think you get out of writing what you put into it. A poorly researched or poorly conceived gag about a culture/language is going to fall flat.

>>
>>90469577
I was talking about the instagram girl and other tumblr comics just in general. Haven't you ever come across tumblr comics that just use a character from a specific culture for progressive points?
>>
>>90469135
Are you allergic to fun or what?
>>
>>90469634
tumblr is currently engaged in a bitter civil war of inclusiveness vs cultural appropriation. ideally it will destroy both sides.
Usually the way out is instead of including something with established qualities, you invent something fictional, claim it's real, and include that, then insist nobody is allowed to define it because it's just people's FEELINGS and PREFERENCES and IDENTITY which obviously are impossible to pin down
>>
>>90469135
>mad because some kid with a pencil draws better than you
>>
>>90469634
No, not really. I see a lot of racial diversity, physical/mental impairments, gender diversity, and "progressive" (semi-obscure, cool but weird looking) shit like vitiligo and heterochromia, but I get the feeling that most white Tumblr authors are afraid to try to write a character from a non-white culture because it'll come across as assumptive and/or racist. If you see a lot of multi-cultural inclusion in a written work on Tumblr it's usually from an author who is a part of that culture or who has that culture in their heritage.

That said, I don't think including a white dude from Norway is a progressive point.
>>
>>90469521
>>90469634
>>90469726
>>90469801
May I intervene here? I'm Swedish so I have a pretty good grasp on Bokmål (the type of Norwegian being used) and it seems she knows what she's doing and is purposely using it wrong for sine gags, which is all good and fun in itself. It's just that when people get upset over "cultural appropriation" it causes a problem because the people who cry wolf usually aren't even from that culture. For example in the ending of the first post, his computer says "post (your) tits" "hang yourself" "how?" "Licorice", which is pretty much norsk reddit. It's not a weird at all. However the rapping strip some language was used improperly yet she made a note about it and stated it was for the gag, which is all well am fun but someone who didn't read the note might get upset and SJW out. So yes, using other types of peoples is great, but you just have to be careful in facist liberal society these days.
>>
>>90469892
I kind of assumed she was Norwegian herself and made the comics in English because, well, it's the internet. I was just telling the guy that making a character Scandinavian wouldn't win her any points with the social justice crowd.
>>
>>90469922
it's getting pretty big in webcomics lately though. I just met someone at a drawing meetup group whose comic is about norse myth shit.
>>
>>90469922
Well you don't know, he could be a Sami. Could be possible she's Norwegian though, I checked and some of her followers are.
>>90469949
I'm so glad that's not what she's doing. I'm so sick of that shit.
>>
>>90469949
Yeah, because medieval/Tolkien fantasy shit is wearing thin, so people are leaning more on other European cultures. Norse myths are the most obvious culture from which to crib elements of a badass fantasy story.

My comic's going to include a lot of Eastern European/Baltic motifs, because it's a decent chunk of my personal heritage and I feel like they'll be a refreshing change of pace compared to other fantasies without having to invent a whole new visual culture.
>>
>>90470048
>be Native American
>can't put own culture in without getting SJW'd

>>
>>90470101
If you flip it back on them you can become an untouchable God unto Tumblr and get individual aggressors blacklisted through callout. "Stupid fucking racist white people trying to police my culture" is a serious trump card on there.
>>
>>90470130

How do I make characters as attractive as >>90468461? I don't know how to make cartoons look bangable.
>>

Study real life hot people.

Eyes, cheeks, lips, nose, etc.
>>
>>90475640
Well that's not really much of a help if everything is cartooy so there's no real way of mimicking a real person perfectly
>>
>>90475927
It's not about mimicking. It's about understanding what features = hot and how to apply these principles to your art.

Like shit nigga, come on.
>>
>>90475999
How do you know what it is about someone that makes them hot?
>>
>>90476073
By studying them. Do we have to go in circles here?

Look at what you find attractive in both real life and caricature, study it, try to apply it, analyze what did and didn't work, rinse, repeat.
>>
>>90471670
it usually gets called a cyoa or a 'quest' if that helps you look up other examples
>>
>>90476119

>>
>>90476219

...what?
Like, what do you want? There's no guide to attractiveness. I'm saying you need to practice caricature based on what you find attractive if you want to make attractive caricature. You're acting like that's not enough info; what more do you need?
>>
>>90475528
I think it's the eyes. study ways of making eyes seem 3d without being gross and bulgy.
>>
>>90476219
If you really don't get it, just take a look at Disney characters for example. Here they're trying to portray a beautiful woman in a cartoon style so how do they do it?

Well fist, what are conventionally attractive female features?
>Big eyes
>Round cheeks
>Clear skin
>Small nose
>Full lips

And would you look at that! Elsa here has every one of those features, albeit stylized! For example, her eyes are made bigger to further her youthful/cute appearance, and her nose is really tiny to make her cheeks look bigger.

Just take attractive figures and exaggerate them a little, anon.
>>
>>90476276

>>
>>90476424
I dunno, I'm still drawing eyes as symbols because I can't do it yet

I will say she's got a bit of a long face, long chin and nose for a pretty girl, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's just not what I'd expect of a sphinx, because it's about as un-catlike as a face can get. Of course you've given her long narrow cat ears so that kind of works.

>>90473481 Here is a short, animated answer. I was going to add more details over time, instead of giving a huge word wall.

Animator is the true god overseeing the story's construction, and the elements of art work underneath him to give the story a foundation to work on so Animator can manage other things. Drawg, the element of line, is the 1st of 7 beasts. Drawg is the easiest and most accessible, because they are in charge of simple lines that make up the story. She is everywhere just like elements work in our world. She is the smallest element with the least mass. She also likes to drink tea somehow, even though she doesn't have a mouth. She's not very funny; not everything needs to have a punchline.
>>
>>90480512
so cute little girlmammal is.. just a minor magician? I got the impression she was more important than even she was aware of, but also that other people didn't fully understand it. like she was an avatar of the animator or something.

>>90480615 If you mean Commisan, she is a minor and poor artist. Kids in school aren't allowed to use the big tools yet, but if you can't learn and demonstrate the fundamentals you get retained. That's why Commisan is still living at school with Mahder. (I should probably make this explicitly stated in comic)

Commisan is important only because Animator spends most of his time focusing his panels and art on her. He's kinda watching her try to grow up since he's not allowed to be in his own story. Other than that Commisan is just like any other character in the story, and although she has the focus right now, she's just somebody else's secondary, background character in their story. (This can't be explicitly stated by anyone)

Next episode's gonna be full of blonde swedish rock therapists with heavy accents and smashed guitars to the pace.
>>
>>90483854
Not that anon, but I have a question for you and anyone else, really.

How many pages in until you know if you're hooked or not? How many until you give up? And finally, what hooks you into the story? What turns you off?
>>
>>90483987
It depends completely. Sometimes it's right away, sometimes it's not for a while.. that goes for a lot of things actually. I listened to some music for years before starting to actually like it.
>>
>>90483987
Things that hook me:
>unique events or humor that I haven't heard a million times
>other indications the writer thinks like me or in ways i've always wanted to read something by a person whose brain works that way
>nice art
>cool subject matter like robots and shit
turnoffs include bringing me out of the story to give some kind of message
>>
>>90483682
>that boob anatomy
I mean, it's your style, but it's kind of grotesque. I the writing a bit though.
>>90483329
Is it weird that some of this is hitting me really hard?
>>
>>90484034
>>90484115
>>cool subject matter like robots and shit

I mean, I can't disagree with this one. Stories with robots automatically have an advantage over me.

Thanks for the answers. I'm working out the first four pages and trying to make them not be boring? Or if they even are? I don't know. I've always struggled with beginnings the most.
>>
>>90484126
I'm gonna tone down that in the future, yeah.

So you like the writing?

>>90484390

Also drew a fullbody of Mrs. Sphinx. Not sure how human/cattish I should make her, as she's basically a furry right now. I'm thinking about just making her a shapeshifter, so she can shift between lady with the body of a lion and kawaii catgirl at will, but I'm still tempted to give her the haunches of a lion. Her outfit definitely is going to get some revision to little less bland, but I

not what I was expecting, but very cute. Love her expression. great color balance.
that's not a dewclaw hallux on her left foot is it? I don't think cats have those the way dogs do.. but if she's part human then that would influence that i suppose.
yeah the shapeshifter idea is good, and relatively traditional, but if I were you I'd stick with a few non-redundant forms. sphinx, human, and maybe full lion. Giving her a lion-satyr form is ... well, if she was a werelion that'd make sense, but when her natural form is a sphinx that's like "hm which arms do i want today" which is.. yknow..

The amount of work you put into tones, backgrounds and everything else helps the overall impression quite a lot, but your basics are still not there. Look into how perspective works (your train tracks are above the mountains) and how limbs and head are attached to the body as well as limbs length relative to other parts of the body. That should be a good start. With the way you are now, the moment you slip out of spending tons of time distracting your readers with backgrounds, the errors like that melting elbow in panel 6 will consume your comic entirely.

I love it. It can be done seriously too, a lot of dramatic comics give little bits of understanding.. A Better Place gives neat little bits of lore, Legend of the Hare gave funny lore and/or song lyrics, and Disregarding Reality helps explain the joke in case people didn't get it, but also clarify the views going on behind the comic which fends off any unintended offense.. which is important when you're a foreignfellow and your sensibilities are just a touch off

I then chose to run each creator's comic as a tumblr blog, with appearance identical to the main site, so tumblrites can get the comics in their feeds and follow any of the webcomic series as an alternative to bookmarking a website and checking it every day

Free? Well, I've heard decent things about Fire Alpaca and Kirita, though I've never used them myself. You might as well just save up for Manga STudio, that's probably the easiest software for comics there is. It's only ~$25 when it's on sale, and it goes on sale pretty often.
>>
>>90509284
Surely you've heard people doing that before though
>>90510056
lions are particularly difficult for satyrs or taurs due to their really short thick legs. at least with ungulates you can bullshit it a bit by taking out what would have otherwise been a really fat long belly on the source critter, lining it up with the proportionately svelte human torso
as for paw-transformations, that's the kind of thing you can get away with if your comic's a little on the silly side, as just sort of a hand equivalent of a face-take.. but since yours isn't, yeahh I suppose it'd have to be teh magics.
In any case if you do show a paw transformation remember that the third phalanx bends backwards
>>
>>90511646
I think she should be bending backwards more at the hip and spine and less at the knee. also if that's meant to be her again in the past nale, her proportions have changed completely

I've gone through so many iterations of the first issue of this comic, it isn't even funny. I've never worked this hard on anything before, and I bust my ass a lot.

I want it to flow as effortlessly as a river, with a current that pulls you the moment you dip your feet in. With characters that you fall in love with as soon as they speak their first lines. I know I'm just waxing a bunch of bullshit right now, but goddamn, I want to get this right.

>>90521658
I know that feel, I was stuck in that phase for a while. The thing is, it's never going to be as perfect as you want it to be, especially if this is your first comic, and that's okay.
The best way for you to improve and get just a little closer to that perfect first issue is to make that good, but flawed, version you have right now, and just keep on making comics. The best way for you to improve your comics is to just keep making them. Keep on practicing, keep on learning new methods, techniques, and keep pushing yourself to learn. Soon enough, you'll look back at the first issue you made, and you'll see all it's flaws. However, moving on from it to draw more comics will have let you improve much more than if you had only focused on issue #1.
Just make your first issue and move on, you can always come back to it later down the road. Finished is better than perfect.
Ganbatte with your comic, anon.

No idea what I'm going to use this character for yet

On a completely unrelated note; has anyone here considered doing a smut/porn comic before starting their main project? I'd imagine it would be good for anatomy practice in the very least
>>
>>90522753
it's rare that it goes in that order and it's not hard to see why.. if you start with porn, any fans you accrue are disappointed with your new work and everyone thinks you're trying to 'sanitize' or something and you've become a prude
but if you start with a regular story then do porn, people are like 'alright, he knows how to do regular stories, no reason he can't branch out' and if they dont like porn they can just wait for your next projecting knowing you're likely to do either kind.

>>
>>90523189
I'm pretty sure that's dead right actually
>>90523120
but uh... a comic like this, in this style, you kinda expect at least one funny thing per page. are you really doing a longer-form story? I mean the art looks fine, it just looks like a silly comic strip. What's your plan?
>>
>>90523120
I think it's serviceable for what it is, a gag comic I presume. One thing that might improve clarity is pushing your poses some more next time. Perhaps show the man really hunched over to the ground as he's searching through the survival kit, and give him a more hurried pose as he fires the flare.
>>
>>90523237
It is meant to be silly, I actually want to do gag strips. This particular one was meant for a 2 page comic assignment for a computer graphics course.

Basically right as he fires the flare, the boat sets off a bunch of fireworks for some celebration, so nobody on the boat notices the flare because they think it's just another firework.
Then the boat sails away, leaving the guy stranded. The end.

Not the guy who was asking, but I have a related question. If one were to make nsfw comics, where would be a good place to host them and what would be a good way to promote them?
>>
>>90523641
I wanna say in terms of promotion; right here on the old chans, considering how perverted we all are, however I've seen other creators try to promote their work here, with mostly negative
>>
>>90523342
that method is a little difficult and would mean you split your two followings, which is a mixed bag, so I would rank it in between those two choices
>>90523641
very little in the way of good hosting being that advertisers won't touch you, but most dedicated webcomics hosts don't give a shit as long as you tick the right box when you sign up. don't do tapastic though, it requires an account to see nsfw ones

How do you add dialogue to a sprite comic though? None of the options really seem ideal
>Speech Bubbles
Can balloon to ridiculous sizes if kept to only one identical panel, or lead to a series of identical panels with differing text where a normal comic could redraw from different perspectives for each one.
>Animated speech bubbles
Leads to the tedium of someone not finishing a line and having to wait for it to loop
>Floating text
As with speech bubbles but with readability issues depending on the background
>Script below the image
Does that even really count as a comic? It definitely brings the two further apart

I mean, I assume it's something you just have to power through or that people don't really mind that much since it comes with the medium, but it seems like an interesting question.

I thought it was darker than usual but it's supposed to be, right? The only thing is that it seems almost nobody is facing the light source at any point, and with allt hese people facing different directions, shouldn't at least one of them be, other than the first panel?

>what's forcing you to make the balloons and panels identical?
The panels, mostly just that there's only so many different ways you can arrange the same sprites. Theoretically, you could add in your own highly detailed ones that just mimic the style of whatever you ripped the basic ones from, but even that kind of breaks with the attractive simplicity of using sprites - you're then basically just doing a normal comic in low-res.
>>

What started as an attempt to play with the Hotsprings trope turned into an interesting take on Eros and Thanatos

A mentor's time is coming to and end and his two pupil's future education needs to be decided while all of the "adulter" adults discuss his final wishes.

All while outside, in the gender separated hot springs, the boys are plotting to peak into the girls side, if not outright invade it, and the doubters among the group are advised to "live a little". The girls however are making schemes of their own, wanting the boys to join them but not wanting to make it easy for them.

I likely wont do anything with this concept outside of writing

http://kiwiday.comicgenesis.com/d/20030909.html

All his protagonists are derivative garbage like 'goku but drunk' or 'link in brown pants' but every so often a generic one-off character shows up who is actually charming. I'd read a comic about a peppy young lady, inexplicably barefoot, who somehow gets elected mayor of a town and walks around in a MAYOR gogo dress doing mayor things.

I want to make a comic, but I can't draw.
I can, however, write. I'd like to plan out and write as much of the comic as possible before I knuckle down and practice drawing until I'm at a level I feel is good enough to make the comic.

How do you plan a comic story? I don't mean structurally, I mean literally how do you write out your script and plot points? Do you write a script? What does a comic script look like?

I'm used to short fiction and screenplays, so I'm not really sure how to approach this.
>>
>>90548636
I have multiple levels of it, but basically my notepad docs are full of things as vague as "they have a kind of disagreement or encounter a surprise" to as specific as lines of dialogue, and everything in between. as I approach that part of the story, I flesh it all out, but I use the vague outline as the guide all along, sometimes with bullet points under each part

I found that it was composed of three things: previously unknown things in common, ways in which they differ that result in amusing (rather than frustrating) conflicts, and one or both parties compromising in a way that they find actually makes them a better person

then again a friend of mine had to tell me they belonged together, back when I thought it was a terrible idea, and that their interaction should be one-sided crushing that's eventually resolved

Just make your comic, don't worry that your art isn't perfect right now because you're always going to be improving.
It's alright if the first comic you make isn't great, you can always redo it or make another one. Comics are their own art form, so the only way to make better comics is to start drawing them.
If you keep working on your art skills as you do your comic, you'll be able to improve your art as you make your comic.
If you want to make a comic, just go for it anon. You'll never know what kind of comic you're capable of until you just sit down and make it.
>>
>>90550102
grinding what? burnt out from what?
I think you should want to start a comic because you want to start a comic. If you're still worried your art is bad, then just make and publish works of art for a while until you're satisfied with them

i like these sketches. the half-finished man could use a protruding brow, that will help guide the rest of the drawing.. moomoo's horns seem kind of swept forward slightly, but at the bottom. next time use guide lines so they stay parallel. that box construction is really nicely done, so you obviously know what you're doing.

the way i see it, its better a story be made poorly than to never be made at all. even the worse stories are too good to be wasted, and there's bound to be someone out there who'll like them, even if its not always for the reasons you intended. of course that's easier said than done, since this is coming from someone who's still yet to put out the first page of a comic due to the same fear. but i have faith in the both of us.

Unfortunately my webcomic's gone on a few mini hiatuses due to my ill management of time and being a slave to min wage jobs. I think my improvement could be a lot better if I actively pursued areas in which I struggle the most artwise.. Lately I've been more proactive about bettering myself and updating more consistently

I sent this week's to my friend and all he responded with was "where's the joke buckley"

That got me thinking about how I should split up updates that require the previous/next page for the story to make sense. I've done two different methods before, one where I drew and posted multiple strips as one update, and another where I posted each as a single update.
The tradeoffs are obviously time and work required for one is way higher, and the other is the full extent of the scene isn't reached immediately, and some people may not bother looking for the next part. Has anyone found particular success with either?

I've been watching a lot of Mighty magiswords, it's a really good show, you just gotta focus and adjust to how high energy it is.
>>
>>90551970
so it's a dramatic comic, done 4 panels at a time? that... that format's gonna hurt you, man. I don't think you should make these separate comics, you might as well make them one long strip (ideally side by side so it's not so massively huge, or even in a square. then you can start asking yourself how you might make different panels different sizes or angles)
I mean this can't have taken more than 20-30 minutes to draw, right? It's better for you and your readers if you consider this to be one-half to one-third of a page
>>
>>90552215
She has been looking really weird over the last few redesigns, but this looks like a step back in the right direction. good face proportion, looks like a sloppy stoner again.. the only thing that's kinda off is how high up the hairline on her temples is, to the point tha tit goes under her hat.
jesus, that magiswords show has art so bad, I'm worried now how it might influence you.
>>
>>90552246
Well, it's certainly the second best art style on CN right now, right under Gumball. It's not really bad, it's just influenced by John K. Very cartoony and for some reason MM hits all of the right places for me artistically even though I don't like RaS that much.

I guess it was because I was raised on high energy cartoons like Ed Edd and Eddy, Power Puff girls and chowder.
>>
>>90551998
Explain

>>90552218
It's not usually a dramatic comic, its usually comedy with a story going on in the background.
Second part, that's exactly the problem, I flip flop back and forth between drawing single row strips and full page layouts and I can't figure out which one I want to stick with. Some updates work better with pages and some work better with strips
>>
>>90552817
not that (first) guy, but having that much negative space that's totally blank takes the focus off of the characters and just makes the whole scene look like a void

as for the rest, it definitely sounds like you wanna stick with full pages. If you want it to usually be a comedy, with some story here and there, then don't let your page end until it's funny. It can be mild, it can be wry, but don't just end on something like that
>>
>>90552975
I know nothing about setting up space, so I appreciate that.
I'll continue playing around with page layout. A couple that I've posted before I tried doing with a page layout but I couldn't find anything that felt like it flowed well.

Tumblr is the new frontier of quirky web design. A lot of free themes come with the option to plaster your anime kintype of choice into the foreground of every page, or header your bio with a gifset, or other shit like that. A lot of people put custom cursors or autoplay music on their pages. Browser Ponies exists. You can circumvent the terrible shit by using the mobile view or reading from your dashboard, so normies don't have to deal with that shit. But if you love the web 1.0 aesthetic your options are limitless. AND, you don't have to manually go in and edit HTML pages every time you want to make a new post.

I've been meaning to make a theme that just simulates Time Cube. I've got too many projects to deal with right now tho.

Bro. Listen. You're gonna embarrass yourself. It happens to us all. That's the side of creative expression you don't see, because the experienced ones are the ones who grab your attention. But the reality is, 99% of people suck at making comics. They're called beginners. If your only motivation to make a comic is to impress people, you'll never make it. Because you won't impress anyone with your first, second, or even tenth comic. Maybe you'll never impress anyone.

Impressing people is not why you do it. Do it because it's fun. Do it because there's at least a couple of people who might enjoy it, or at least be interested in your hobby. Whatever you do, enjoy the process. Don't compete with other artists for validation.

I know it's easier said than done, but: just make comics, man. It took me a couple of years to put pages online because of similiar fears, and the moment I took the risk I realized what an idiot I had been for being afraid of it.

Usually what you will hear is "just do it". Make your project be about something that matters to you, and make it small enough so you'll make sure you can finish it. Consider short stories. Or don't. Don't let anyone tell you it's pointless. It's never pointless if you learn something while doing it.

These are the only good ones. Top being the best.

Go check out the Enneagram Test and the Myers Briggs test, and use those to build a personality for your character. The usual problem with female protags is that they lack personality of any sort, and are either male characters with a vagina, or 1-dimensional overempowered pixies with a feminist agenda. Or hell, not even that just 1-dimensional in general, even as fan service.

One key factor you gotta consider when writing a female protag is that girls are different from guys, and that female psychology is vastly different from male psychology. Women have different drives and respond to things in different ways. Keep this in mind when writing a female protag.

Also, look at well-written and well like female characters, Asuka from EVA is a phenomenal example, particularly cause she shows how to have a character with many flaws that's still very empowered. That's the key. Don't make them useless, whiny, or annoying. Don't make them incompetent, as that just annoys the reader. But also, don't make her a mary sue, which is the most common problem these days. Balance her out with many character flaws to make her more interesting, you gotta have your reader WANT to get to know you character better.
>>
>>90558797
cont
Also, don't be afraid of giving her some traits that will cause people to become attracted to her. And I mean endearing personality traits and quirks, these things are key, as the main audience you wanna win over are males, my mere virtue of being a competent protag, most girls will be ok with her.

Lastly, unless there's a reason for it, make sure she's pretty. Deliberately making a female protag unattractive when there's no justifiable plot reason for it will only piss people off.

>>90558746
This is not true at all, one trip to /a/ will prove otherwise. It's also why that RWBY garbage is so popular.

>>90558776
Not necessarily big tiddies DFC is a thing. But never underestimate the power of waifus.
>>
>>90558604
Well I follow some of those tropes and people don't hate my female characters.,

Actually, I think the only reason people read west tree is because of the girls.
>>
>>90558812
>This is not true at all, one trip to /a/ will prove otherwise. It's also why that RWBY garbage is so popular.

What? There are plenty of RWBY fans that dislike any of the main girls for various reasons. Oh, this one is too simple. This one is to bitchy. This one is too isolationist. etc, etc

I mean, the goal is to write well-rounded characters regardless of sex. When you start sweating yourself about "strong female characters" is when you end up with jarring characters that may or may not be "muh waifu" material, which I assume isnt what that author wants based off his character choices so far. And even in the end, as you can see with RWBY, having "waifus" doesnt let you escape criticism
>>
>>90558816
nobody reads west tree though
>>
>>90559171
Yeah, but there are plenty of people who like RWBY, only BECAUSE of the waifus. Story and pretty much everything about it are absolute shit, dA tier wanna be anime garbage.

The ONLY reason it's popular is cause it was made by a popular person, and the waifus.

Yeah, the main cast is riddled with bad characters, I'm not arguing that, but RWBY thrives on the fact that it's the first western anime niche, and it has a large cast of waifus for nerds to latch onto. Any RWBY thread is full of people talking about the waifus and posting fan art.

I agree with your second point, that's the point I was trying to make. Just write a good character, and you'll be fine. People these days do have a bit of stigma toward female protags in general, because feminism has been trying to force that shit, which is a bit of a pity. But the way around this is to write a good character, and give her waifu traits, and most people won't lash at you for it. Again, best example, Evangelion.

Also, I reiterate what I said about keeping in mind the differences between female and male psychology. One of the most interesting aspects of having a female protag is exploring all the differences in character from a male counterpart.

Also, I'll add that they key to a strong protag is a strong supporting cast, and most importantly, a strong antagonist. Your protag will always fall flat if the antagonizing force is weak and poorly constructed.

Also, make sure you have actual sexuality in your characters. Nothing worse than asexual characters, which desu, was one of the worst problems with Force Awakens. Contrast this to the chemistry between the cast of classic SW, and you'll see what I mean. Again, with a female protag you can explore all sorts of different angles to this sort of thing.

I'd also say that it would help to talk to many girls. If you wanna write a good female protag, the better you understand the female mind, the easier a time you'll have at writing a nuanced female character.
>>
>>90559336
>Also, I reiterate what I said about keeping in mind the differences between female and male psychology. One of the most interesting aspects of having a female protag is exploring all the differences in character from a male counterpart.

While I agree, I also dont think its wrong to write a character that doesnt "fit the mold" so to speak

Writers will try to write a character that's different from them in a "authentic" way, despite not understanding the nuances of different groups of people, and end up coming up with idealized/stereotypical versions (see: "generic blushing anime girl", "hippity-hop lovin' black best friend", etc). That, or they will just give up and only include characters that share their same sex/race/sexuality
>>
>>90559530
Oh, for sure.

This is why I say that if you wanna write good female characters, it's good to talk to a lot of girls, and game many female friends, at least as a male writer. But hell, even as a female writer, having more diverse experiences with other minds even help. As a male writer, it also helps to know other guys as well. People are interesting, and imo, the heart of a story lies in its characters. Again, the better you understand the mind of people, the better characters you'll write.

Also, I'll that with characters that don't "fit the mold" even a tomboy is still a girl. Everyone has masculine and feminine traits, regardless of gender, it's just a matter of which traits we latch onto the most as we develop.

That said, there are still core biological psychological traits to people.

For example, some female exclusive ones:

Girls, in general do not like taking charge, and are bad at making decisions, they decide things based on how they "feel" to them, rather than looking at objective facts. Girls are more likely than men to follow "the emotion of the moment" and then backwards rationalize their choices. They are also much more impulsive. Girls are much more social, they tend to have a lot more empathy than men, and oftentimes, ALL girls, do just need a good cry. Crying for girls generally feels for them. It's a way of them letting out their emotions, which girls in general have a NEED for. Just the same was we men have a NEED for sexual release, no, it's not a want, it's a need, for both of us.

Anyway, no, not ALL girls are like this, nor am I saying that girls can't be objective, etc... but girls being more emotionally driven is a key biological factor for them, They DO have more emotional intelligence than men, and thus, tend to be much better than their male counterparts at noticing subtle social ques, to which most men will not only be totally oblivious to, but also generally don't care for.
>>
>>90559720
cont...

Now, if you were to write a female character who broke some of those molds, you'd have to carefully look at those traits, and write her in a way where she overcomes that. For example, there are many girls who love to take charge, and have a strong desire to attain satisfaction from goals. However, these are never innate, they are learned. Either from someone else, or through personal experience. Thus, you'd have to go about explaining this aspect of their personality. Did they have a father who they really looked up to, and thus they inherited some of his traits? Are they naturally rebellious, and thus sought to be more independent thinkers? etc...

Having this core understanding, and then answering these sorts of questions are what give a character nuance, and thereby makes them more interesting. Problem with a lot of Mary Sue characters and such is that they break that mold with little explanation for it.

It goes both ways, if you were to write a male character who had many feminine traits, and really didn't offer much of an explanation for it, it'd just feel forced, and different for the sake of being different.

Start with a core natural base, and work your way outward.

Which is why I always recommend people use personality tests like the Enneragram and the MBPT to build characters. It gives you a solid foundation to start on.
>>
>>90559720
>It's a way of them letting out their emotions, which girls in general have a NEED for. Just the same was we men have a NEED for sexual release, no, it's not a want, it's a need, for both of us.

Literally both genders need both of these things, imo. The way you described women is how I, a woman, perceive men much of the time. President Trump is a great example.
>>
>>90559991
At the very least gender-specific behaviors are encouraged by the society/world we find ourselves in and I think most stories are featured in similar environments, so anon is right in the sense that its nice to take into account how different genders are raised and come up with reasoning as to why someone would differ from various "normal" traits
>>
>>90559991
Not quite, as man, I've found it's much easier to keep my emoitions in, and in fact, I'll even add that most men struggle with expressing their emotions properly in fact, something that's almost second nature to women.

At the same time, while we all have sexual needs, a girl can very easily deny sex if she's not in the mood, and can even go a long time without sex, and still be fine (depending on libido). I know plenty of girls who have never masturbated, and when they're not in relationships, or sexually active, they just simply don't. On the other hand, if go I less than a week without jerking it, it starts to fuck with me. It makes me a lot more impulsive, and puts me on edge. For us guys, constant release is necessary, otherwise it fucks with our hormones. For girls, this is not the case, even with high libido. A girl can go a solid month without any sexual release, and still be the same. There's also such a thing as blue balls for men, which legit causes pain, for girls, not so much. I've had girls change their mind on sex at the flip of a switch. Like, their pussy was legit wet, dripping on my leg, and if something puts them off, it's an instant no. This will never happen with a guy. If we want it, we want it, and we'll even fuck an ugly girl to get it if we've gone too long without it.

Anon, broad strokes paint the fence faster. I can only say so much with 2000 characters. That aside, take it as you will. I don't want it to sound like I'm bragging, but I can confidently say I've had more sexual experiences than everyone in this board combined. So take that into account with what I'm saying. I've spent a lot of time with the opposite sex, and me and my friends often talk about these things, and just how girls are in general. I know for a fact that I understand women better than most women understand themselves, simply because the combined experience of all the girls me and my friends have dated/fucked collectively far outweighs the single experience of just one girl. And this is not me "bragging" , as I said, it is important to understand women to write a female protag. And I've spent a lot of time thinking about this sort of stuff, even for my own stories. So take that as you will.

The overall point of what I was getting at is that men and women are biologically different, and those differences affect how they psychologically develop. Again nature vs nurture, a core understanding of these elements goes a long way in creating a believable character. If these things upset you, then too bad. Go ahead and write characters as you see fit, I won't stop you, I was merely trying to help, and providing my own experience as reference, but take it as you will. I have serious doubts you'll find better advice when it comes to writing characters though, as what you're doing is essentially writing a person, not a trope (as your list suggested), and the more you understand people, and human psychology (WHY people behave the way they do, and how personalities develop) the stronger a grasp you'll have a writing compelling characters.

No shitty "top 10 writing tips" list will ever tell you this, nor will you get this sort of advice from people who are too timid to interact and socialize with other people frequently.

> I know for a fact that I understand women better than most women understand themselves, simply because the combined experience of all the girls me and my friends have dated/fucked collectively far outweighs the single experience of just one girl

Anon, you do realize most girls spend time with women other than themselves? It's not like being female makes you except from having a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, female friend, female coworker, girlfriend, or what have you.

As for general opinions, I'm pretty "meh" on Webtoons. I'm not fond of only being allowed to upload jpegs, so I use it more as a mirror. I have the most official followers on Webtoons, but there isn't a ton of audience engagement. I'm not fond of using it to read comics, but other people enjoy using it to read my stuff so I don't care.
>>
>>90561086
>Seems that focusing on a character's sex just turns them into boring binary stereotypes.

Except you pretty much missed the point of everything I said. Do whatever you want though. If you lack a basic grasp on simple reading comphrehension, and fail to understand how building off a core base, and answering questions is vital to building a character, then I doubt you'll have much success either way.

Just don't complain about people not liking your characters next time.

Male or female, you still need to know some basic human psychology when writing characters.

>>90561117
Most girls don't try to FUCK other girls, and that's the key distinction here. In fact, most women generally dislike other women.

> It's not like being female makes you except from having a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, female friend, female coworker, girlfriend, or what have you.
That's like saying talking to your mom and grandma and sister from time to time makes a valid replacement for going out and interacting with dozens of girls. You gave a mom a kiss this morning before going to school, so now you're a master pimp, right? Dude, what are you even saying?

Ahh fuck it, forget it. This is gonna go nowhere, I can already tell this is going over most of your heads already. If you fail to understand why I'm even bring sexuality into the equation here, then forget it. Write characters as you see fit, learn from your mistakes. However, a key human element will always be missing in your characters so long as you reject what I've told you.

You're writing PEOPLE not TROPES. Remember that.

So, here's a related question. I'm female but I tend to have a lot of dudes in my work and I want to make sure they actually act like real men. Pretty is so subjective that it doesn't matter what your girls look like. A good rule of thumb is to have more than one girl character and make sure their faces are distinctly different from each other.

I also don't, but then again I am made fun of by my friends who jerk off 3 times a week minimum. We are in the minority here. Regardless, Anon isn't really wrong about women having a way smaller sex drive than men
>>
>>90561576
The trick for writing men is, write a woman, but add reason and accountability.
>>
>>90561576
>What are some problems you guys noticed female writers often have when writing men?

They always end up gay.
>>
>>90561777
>women having a way smaller sex drive than men
I mean, I wouldn't necessarily say this, as in my experience, women are more sexually perverted than men, and when their switch is flipped, they often want west more often than I do. I would honestly say that men are more sexually impulsive than women. Women, tend to be very discrete about their sexuality compared to men. That much is true. That aside, despite this, sexual release is a physiological need for most men. In the cases that it's not, it's usually a sign of an unhealthy lifestyle and low testosterone. If you're not waking up with a hard on every morning, and you're in you're 20s, get that checked.

>>90561576
Take everything I said about writing a female character, and reverse it. Again, the key to writing good and believable characters is understanding why people behave the way they do. If you struggle with this, I suggest spending some time with the opposite sex, and getting to understand them more. Honestly, just asking us question in general can go a long way. Whenever female writers struggle to write decent male characters, it's cause they're writing an idealized male, rather than an actual one. Think the sort of stuff you see in soap operas or romance novels. Men who go out of their way for the female protag, or men who are essentially flawless, and caring and understanding. As other have pointed out, myself included, character flaws go a long way in creating interesting characters, especially since people themselves are flawed.

Again, you're trying to emulate real people with your writing, so go out and spend time with people, and pay attention to the way they think and act, this is how you start to get more believable characters.

If you really wanna capture the essence of a guy, pay close attention to our mannerisms.

the only real problem with that is that the first comic is always really hard, so you might get the wrong impression of how rough it's going to be. a one-shot is going to be over long before you get into the groove

make her sweet and adorable, and just a little bit flawed in ways that don't cause major problems. everyone will love her. your story will suffer, however.

men are vulcans. we HAVE emotions, but if we let them out they become destructive, so we hold them in.
as for women, a huge percentage of them are sexually dysfunctional. We're still trying to figure that out, but that's not an intrinsic characteristic of the sex. It's almost certainly something environmental (estrogen in the water?)

oh my god, instant fave. this is a classic farce with a modern twist.
also this is the kind of comic where the webtoons/tapastic format isn't that bad because you read a long list of pages vertically, that's just fine. and yeah updating weekly would be great, can you really put out this many pages every week?

Are you Bones? You're sounding like Bones.

Dude, I'm just going to say that lesbians exist, and most women aren't as petty as you think they are, and actually enjoy female company.

Pull your head out of your ass, you seem to know jack shit about opposite sex. If you really understand the ~*feminine mind*~ that well, post your work, let's see how well you can write a girl.
>>
>>90562514
because sex has been treated as this taboo for the early part of our lives and then this politicized freedom for the next part and now it's being treated like a weapon whenever women are involved. it'd be impossible not to be a little messed up from those influences.

>>90562574
Yeah, but we were talking about character traits, not libidos and sexualities.

Looks pretty nice so far! Premise is concise, funny, and entertaining, the art is clean, I like it!

Once a week would be a fine schedule imho, but it probably wouldn't hurt even if you were slower. The Webtoons crowd is pretty patient from what I've observed, as long as your updates are long enough. I don't know how long it takes you to make each update, but it seemed like a lot of content to me, so maybe once every other week might be okay too.
>>
>>90562603
yeah it's easy to get distracted.
plus libido does drive one's personality somewhat. the hard part is getting the amount right. almost all fiction goes too far one way or the other, because of the stigma on including any sexuality at all pushing you into the all-sex-all-the-time ghetto

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/cultural-animal/201012/the-reality-the-male-sex-drive

Despite his conclusion, he says this right in his paper:

>There is no single, clear measure of sex drive.

And his "experiments" were flimsy at best, as I'm arguing that women in relationships will want sex more frequently than men. It's happened to me, and all my friends.

>>90562557
No idea who bones is desu. I don't often come to /co/ in fact.

As for my work, the current comic I'm working on isn't even written by me, and it doesn't feature any notable female characters as it's a political parody. The only one that's prominent doesn't get ANY development till Ch.6. I'm still just about finishing Ch.3.

When I get to Ch.6, or when I get started on my next project later this year I'll post some good examples. But those won't be written by me either, my best friend is handling the writing while I focus on the art. You'll get to see my take on female characters when I get around to writing my personal project, as it features a female protagonist. Much like people here were asking about. Reason I'm so keen on this subject is cause I've already walked that road to write her out.

Also, lesbians aren't representative of the entire female population. I made a generalized statement to help people build off that mold. Ofc there are exceptions, there are always exceptions.

Honestly dude, simplest answer, just observe REAL people. That's how you do it.

>>90562603

Because sexuality is fundamental part of making your story feel more human and relatable, as EVERYONE falls in love, everyone wants sex, and everyone has a need to connect with other humans.

sadly sexual research is always problematic. For one thing you'll never get a representative sample considering only certain kinds would volunteer, and even moreso the way they measure arousal is.. a little counterproductive

>EVERYONE falls in love, everyone wants sex, and everyone has a need to connect with other humans.
asexual people exist
>>
Women don't fart.

That is the extent of my knowledge.
>>
>>90563242
And they are a MINORITY.

You're trying to make your story relateable. Asexuals are unrelateable to MOST PEOPLE, as it's a result of a mental illness, most notably, depression, which leads to low libido. Most people can't relate with people who have mental problems. Unless you're gonna make your characters asexuality the crux of the story and are focusing on bringing that element to the forefront of the public eye, you're gonna have a hard time making them relatable to your audience if they are devoid of sexuality.
>>
You have any hashtag to recommend for tumblr to be reblogged or get follow/note from your webcomic?
>>
>>90563464
sounds like your analyzing it a bit hard

audiences generally dont care if the protagonist isnt out there kissing or dating (assuming the story is not romance, of course)
>>
>>90563581
Except they do.

One of the biggest criticisms of Force Awakens for example was the lack of chemistry between the main cast, and this was often contrasted to the OT, all of which were oozing with sexuality, sexual chemistry, and innuendo.

People like sex.

Sex sell.

People relate to sexual feelings.

Sexuality makes your story feel more relatable and human as sex is a fundamental part of the human experience.

Stories lacking sexuality often seem flat and devoid of heart.

End of story.

Even fucking Disney films have sexuality in them. And those are for kids. Characters always fall in love, and lock eyes, and have kids. It's always at the very core of their stories, regardless of the genre.

Woah thanks! I had a lot of fun coming up with the plot. It's inspired a bit by some of the stuff I've read here over the years about Bob Kane and other "artists" of the Golden Era of comics.

I think I can do it, I drew this in like three days or so, without hurrying much. But it was a fairly simple setting, so things may vary later.

I don't think there's a single magic hashtag that will get you All The Reblogs.

I use "#comic" and "#webcomic" on the comic posts, as well as "#artists on tumblr" on all my own art posts (both comic and illustration). Also have unique tags for your comic's title, and your brand name (your artistic identity, or company name, etc). Some people also add a string of tags for just about anything that features in the strip/image, but anything more than two or three key words or themes seems like overkill to me.

Personally, I think Likes are fairly worthless, as pretty much no-one sees them except you and the person whose post you Liked. Reblogs and Follows are where it's really at.

Excuse me, you need to read that article again without your biased glasses on. This guy is saying exactly what I am saying. Read the whole paragraph after >There is no single, clear measure of sex drive.
There is no single measure, but in every case they could think of to measure sex drive, men came out on top. It would be a thing if results came balanced in different experiments, but it isn't the case, there's one clearly hornier gender.
The people trying to push this fantasy that women and men have the same sex drive are the "women studies" experts, like the one he cites in his article.

>his "experiments" were flimsy at best
Well, you were the one who chose the study. Why don't you go after that great study that proves your intuitions are right?
>>
>>90563965
It shouldn't be the focus of an action adventure story, no. But it shouldn't be devoid of it either.

Name one GOOD monomyth that doesn't have romance or sexuality of any sort in any way.

It's always present. All the Lucas SW films, Matrix had it with Neo and Trinity, plus that dance orgy in 2, Gladiator had it, Hercules had it, Tarzan, even Wall-E had it.

I'm very hard pressed to think of ANY story that doesn't show sexual chemistry between two characters that's been considered good or relatable.

Quit using a strawman argument. I've already cited what I've said, that women in relationships want sex more often than men. Which was NOT studied by that guy.

2nd, it's already been citied again and again, that such studies are impossible to do anyway, and yield very untrustwothy results. He literally spends half his paper talking about how hard it is to even come up with such answers.

Have you ever had a gf dude? Once you do, you'll see, when a girl's switch gets flipped it's a whole different story. Ask any guy who's been with many girls, ANY. They'll all tell you the same shit, girls are closet pervs.

So it all comes down to....

>A boy falls in love with a girl.

Its like pottery.
>>
>>90564291
Typically yes, because we normally have male protags. With a female protag, you can explore the opposite side, which is one of the interesting benefits of choosing a female protag.
>>
>>90564185
Well, most episodes of the amazing world of gumball don't, and that mighty magiswords doesn't as well, Power Puff girls doesn't, Dexters Lab for the most part does not. Wander over Yonder's first season didn't. Hell even most of the second season wasn't, you know, when it didn't focus on dominator. Even then in the very end it was about using the power of love, not sexual love., but the love you feel in a nice and secure friendship to help you through your angry and lonely times.
>>
>>90564331
I really, really wish we had more 'chicks searching for the right dude' stories. at best, we get pining and what the cynical modern sorts call "one-itis".. which is fine.. but not as good as if she was hungry and also discerning and discriminating, and really trying to get to know a bunch of different dudes, dating-sim-style, til she finds one she likes.
>>
>>90563713

There's enough chemistry in that movie that fujoshis still haven't calmed the fuck down
>>
>>90564388
I think something really cool to explore would be the "romantic interest dies" story from the female perspective. One the male side, I think Casino Royale does it best. A revenge story. Katanagatari did it well too.

From the female side, there isn't much, but it's something I personally seek to explore in due time. Because unfulfilled romance is great, and it's great to see two characters grow together, and develop as a result of meeting each other, only to have one lose their other half for good. Seeing how a female protag can cope with that loss is interesting to me.

>>90564387
I haven't watched any of those shows aside from bits of Gumball, Dexter and PPG.

Gumball certainly does, like a lot. It's subtle, but it's there. Especially with the mom and the dad. There's also tons of innuendo in Gumball.

Dexter definitelly does, one of the key tropes was Mandark pining for Deedee, and there even was an episode of a little girl who falls for Dexter, and it was seen at many other times in the series. Also the Monkey bits, with the spy chick.

PPG also had it, ffs, it literally had a gay devil who was about as sexualized as could be. You also had the Mayor's secretary. You also had the Beat Alls episode with Mojo Jojo.
>>
>>90564493
No anon. Insane tumblr landwales making up headcanons does not count as chemistry.

In SW we saw characters KISS, and Han constantly hit on Leia, like literally from the first film, Han's already trying to put the moves on her.

Hell, Luke's ENTIRE motivation in that film was sex driven.
>Oh shit, hot princess, Imma rescue her and get laid!!
>>
>>90564588
Okay so it doesn't count if women see it okay
>>
>>90564539
oooh you're right. heroes die tragically sometimes and their womens cry, but it's rare they get to be the main character and we get their whole perspective on the loss.
>>
>>90564645
I think anything fat tumblrinas say just doesn't count at all.

She literally fucking cut his face open with a lightsaber, and was ready to kill him. Only an insane maniac would see that as a form of affection for someone.

Watch any person do a critical review of TFA, they'll always cite the lack of sexuality as one of the problems with the film. It's not very clear in any. She's more like an asexual lesbo in some way.
>>
>>90564760
in fairness she didn't spend enough time with the one guy who was even remotely in her league, and she had other shit to worry about. I can't think of any places where romance could have bloomed in that movie, but obviously it's going to as the trilogy progresses.
I mean, that WOULD be obvious if it wasn't the decade it is.

>>

Yep, that's one of the core elements I seek to explore with a future comic.

Still a long ways from properly writing that though. I have the main cast written out, and the key elements of the plot, and the underlying plot, as well as the ending, and a general rough view of the setting.

It's a monomyth with a female protag, a bit of a sci-fi fantasy/space western with conspiracy lovecraft elements mixed in.
>>
>>90564796
Luke and Han managed just fine.

There are many problems with the writing in that film to be fair though. That's really more of a result of general incompetence when writing than anything else really.

I was writing a pretty big reply about how trustworthy is his research, and how he only doubts the results because they aren't seen as PC, and people get mad at him for it... but I realised this isn't our discussion.

The thing is, you are very skeptic about this guy's study, fair enough, studies can be misleading, but then, while you are quick to dismiss a study, you see your anecdotal evidence as absolute real data indicative of every women's sex drive. Why?

By the way, there is a part of this study that could explain women wanting sex all the time only inside relationships but that still doesn't mean they have equal sex drive to men, much less a bigger one.
>>
>>90564539
>PPG also had it, ffs, it literally had a gay devil who was about as sexualized as could be. You also had the Mayor's secretary.

Yeah, but there sexuality and how sexual they were wasn't part of there character, the sexual part came second.

I mean that was the whole point of Sarah bellum, she was more than just a sexy lady, she was actually a very smart woman.

>one of the key tropes was Mandark pining for Deedee
That was cartoonish love, there wan't that much depth to it.

>and there even was an episode of a little girl who falls for Dexter
Yeah, one episode, this is pretty much nitpicking at this point.
