Why did they pronounce her name as "Ashleying"?
Are americans that dim-witted that they can't pronounce letters directly? I don't see anyone having a problem pronouncing Fiona.
>>
>>90444194
If it's a different spelling of the Irish "Aislinn", then it's pronounced "Ash-lin".
>>
>>90444040
The movie lacked a lot of substance, yet somehow the comic books ended up revealing more of the lore than animated movie did.

Why didn't anyone tell the Abbot that he's a retard? "You can't defend a wall without warriors".
>>
>>90444194
Are you suggesting that you think it's pronounce exactly like it's spelled, which would be "ice-ling"? You're fucking dumb, buddy.
>>
>>90444242
I don't think religion leaves a lot of room for questioning people higher up on the hierarchy than you are.
>>
>>90444299
>I don't think any hierarchy leaves much room for questioning those higher up than you are, especially more traditional forms

Ftfy

In theory, depending on Religion, it can be a bit more open than usual.

But the whole younger-questioning-elder thing would be fairly standard-ly ignored, I would assume.

The message really had nothing to do with the plot itself.
It does come off as hippie garbage if we take the Abbot's side. I mean he's preparing the fortifications and this old nutjob doesn't care about anything but his artistic vision in a time of war. And Aidan lured the vikings to the land, otherwise why did they come in just 3 days when they haven't come in years.

Aisling *is* an Irish name.

It *is* pronounced "Ash-lin".

This was the name of the Irish girl at my work and she just buggered off back to Belfast to get married, damn it all.
>>
>>90444040

By the way, if you want to have some fun with someone who has a Northern Irish accent, ask them to say "Jane" and then ask them to say "Jean".

More like Ash-ling, with a shushier, s, but yeah, pretty mutch.
>>
>>90444608
>Open your eyes and I'll tell you my name

The joke here is that her name, Aisling, means "vision" in Gaeilge. The earlier line, "a beetle recognizes another", is an old addage basically equating to "it takes one to know one".
>>
>>90444040
She sang the best song in the movie.
>>

The G isn't pronounced.

Aisling means "dream/vision". Not actual sight.

>>
Why the fuck wasn't Aisling the main character?
>>
>>90444040
Unlike the greater part of her ill-begotten people, she's not a lazy alcoholic who'd stab you as soon as rob you.
>>
>>90444194
>Why did they pronounce her name as "Ashleying"?

Because they've probably been spelling that name that way for like 1000 years, and the "S" and "I" are pronounced differently in Irish than they are in English, so while the Irish language has been largely superseded by English, many names of people and things retain their Gaelic pronunciations.
>>

Both are fantastic, but I'd have to go with Song of the Sea. It's just a bit more cohesive package as a whole, while The Secret of Kells felt like it ended short. Also, I'm a sucker for everything that is sad and related to mothers, so there's that.
>>
>>90445740
It's also spelt "Aislinn".
Which a lot of people still pronounce as "Ay's-ling".

It's annoying because historically Irish monastaries were defended by a local levy who won against the Vikings more often than not.

Honestly the Vikings have a pretty poor track record going up against the Irish so it was weird that the movie portrayed them as some unstoppable force

>>90462221
First of all, you'd probably like Song of the Sea more.

Second, wrong. People who think that the ending is "scattered" aren't reading it the right way and are assuming it's just a regular children's fantasy movie, completely missing out on the subtext. Not saying that's what you did but that's basically what I see when people say they don't like the story.

>plot was generic

Name one other animated film where the bad guys get everything they wanted and the best the hero can do is just survive.

If this were a generic story it would have been about Brendan obtaining some sort of magical maguffin that defeats the vikings, then at the end he and Aisling get married. Instead the vikings win, Aisling loses her human form and never sees Brendan again, and everyone at the monastery is slaughtered except for four people, and the lesson we're given is that sometimes all you can do is light a tiny candle in the endless darkness.

You can dislike the story if you want, but it sure as hell isn't generic.
>>

>name one other animated film where the bad guys get everything they wanted and the best the hero can do is just survive

Star Wars The Clone Wars, the animated movie.
>>
>>90465992
>Aisling loses her human form

This is not implied by the movie in any way and is just fan headcanon as far as I can tell.

Also, she's "human" as the framing device, telling of the story itself which was in the past. Her losing her human form is not just fan headcanon, it's demonstrably faulty headcanon.

I liked Song of the Sea more so I'm curious what subtext I missed.

Fantasy media has this habit of placing one's community above all else. The saving of a village from a monster, the way every Pokemon game ends with the player returning home as the credits roll, or even the way Steven Universe has so many episodes devoted to the people of Steven's home town.

Kells doesn't place this emphasis solely on the village, but rather on the book, which represents Christianity and the spread of knowledge. Because the village gets sacked with twenty or so minutes still left in the movie, it's easy to see how this community trope is easily shattered, yet this is because the whole movie represents the divide between defense of the wall and defense of knowledge. Abbot sees Christianity as a tertiary political tool to keep the village safe. Aiden sees Christianity (and therefore the book) as a truth that needs to be spread regardless of the relative situation. This is also why Brendan has to leave the village and confront Cruach to continue the book's production: the truth is not something that can continue only from a sheltered position of safety (the walled village) but is something to actively share with the world.

Aisling continually assists him with the creation of the book. Even though the book is a manifestation of Christianity, Aisling is valid because the pagan beliefs of the Celts are reflections of the same universal truths. This is illustrated in that the trunk of the tree that Brendan gets the berries from has a triquetra (symbol of the Trinity) formed in its bark. When Brendan returns through the forest again at the end, another young tree has the same symbol on it, renewing the cycle.

...Song of the Sea is probably a better movie for most people because the plot is a lot tighter and more easy to summarize. Kells's themes are a lot harder to fully grasp outside of the lens of Celtic/Christian spirituality. That's kind of my shit though, so I like Kells more even though I think Song tugs at the heartstrings better.

I definitely preferred SotS more simply for the fact I watched it with my daughters and they we're transfixed by it enough to want to cuddle up for the duration.

Good post. Sums it up quite nicely, and it's also part of why I like Kells more. I also thought Kells had better music and atmosphere.

This tune in particular is very chilling:
